I've washed my hands of Skyrim. Yesterday I set out to and finished the rest of the story. Combat is just too repetitive.

I'm sorry to hear that.  I'm still keen on Skyrim because I play it for:

1) Exploration: I avoid fast travel like the plague - you never know what run into when you go cross country. My favourite random encounter was when my batlemage in daedric armor got cut to pieces / blasted into embers by an elite level vampire in the countryside, reloaded 6+ plus times before I decided it was a lost cause, summoned a distraction and ran for it.

2) Stealth: I am a fan of Thief: The Dark Project. Skyrim's stealth gameplay is still far from perfect, but enough that I can relive Thief's basic blackjack gameplay. Approach, observe, maneuver, wait  and strike (backstab if confident of instakill, snipe if not).  Throw Voice is used extensively.  I've forgotten how many named Dragon Priests perished without ever laying eyes on my Nightblade - even though my Nightblade has enough magic powress to go spell-on-spell with them if I want.

I'm glad sneaking is incorporated fairly well in Reckoning.  I wonder if a pure finess char with extensive stealth investment could do almost nothing but backstab nearly everything s/he encounters.  It will be something to try, but I won't be broken up if it doesn't work.

In Reckoning, I figure I am going to play all of the classes at one time or another with one exception. the pure Warrior class.  Playing straight warrior just goes against my grain - I would always like to have stealth or magic as options at least and I can and do play primarily stealth or magic in appropriate games.

Charactor plans
1) Dokkalfar Rogue/Mage
- gonna be female with dark skin and red hair; I have an obsession with this combo which is reflected in my DA:O HNF (as per my profile photo) and my femShep
2) Ljosalfar Mage or Warrior/Mage
3) Varani Rogue or Warrior/Rogue

I'm glad some people can find enjoyment in Skyrim.  I'm sure it's better if you like stealth and magic.  But I'm not one for either.  So, the options available in the game for what I like are slim and close to none.  It's just a different type of game for a different type of person than myself.  And I have to invest in Enchanting to be able to stand a chance on anything higher than the default difficulty to continue playing the way I have been.  I never like it when you're forced to do something specific to get through higher difficulties.

Reckoning definitely has melee combat locked and Dragon's Dogma doesn't look too far off from that either.  Also, unlike Skyrim or Reckoning, archery in that game actually looks pretty cool.  Reckoning and Dragon's Dogma are going to possibly be the first open world games where I actually come close to doing everything.

Same here.  I was going to try and go for dark colors all around, but what's supposed to be dark red doesn't look as good as the lighter red.  So, I decided to go for hair and tattoo colors that are different from the skin tone I'm using.

You don't HAVE to invest in Enchanting to play higher difficulties. It just makes things that much easier.
And I hear Alchemy is even more potent. Though I kinda dislike the 1-shot effect of it.
But I'm sure you can do just fine on Master with neither. Actually the game would probably be more fun this way. You can still easily reach the armor cap. And do quite enough damage (you can even buy/find Fortify [weapon skill] items).
It's probably less then if you max dual Enchantments, but still more then enough. Gauntles of Fortify One/Two-handed and Helmets of Fortify Archery are pretty common. All kinds of pots can also be found/bought.

Only thing that's kinda important is you really should find a way to mitigate incoming magical damage, otherwise the game could become pretty frustrating. But this also doesn't require Enchanting or Alchemy.
Breton race gets flat 25% reist to all magic. Can also Absorb 50% Magic once per day. The Lord Stone offers another 25% flat Resist all Magic. There's an easy quest that provides another 15% permanent Magic Resist. So that's 40% of resistance to all magic types readily and easily available to all characters (65% for Bretons).
As for the rest... there's a Shield Block perk that offers 50% elemental resist. There are two shields that offer another 20 or 30% Magic Resistance. Spellbreaker shield offers a permanent warding effect when blocking. Shields with resist to one element (as high as 70%) are also common loot/shop assorment.
For characters who don't like shields, there are common boots that provide elemental resists as well. You can buy 3 pairs and switch them as needed. Not to mention rings and amulets.
Finally two popular races, Nords and Dunmer, have 50% permanent resists respectively to Cold and Fire.

So sure, a character who will have two effects on each equipment piece will be a bit stronger.. who cares? The game should be fun, shouldn't it?

I was going to cooment on archery as well, but I see now you meant Dragon Dogma. Archery in Reckoning looks absolutely atrocious with the autotarget autoaim clicky thing on cooldown.

ES's combat system is more for ranged attacking. It's similar to Bethesda's other game, Fallout, without guns and fun. I don't like melee in first person either. They did add third person to Skyrim but it feels really awkward.

Not much on archery myself, except in RTS games, but the worst for me was DA:O.

Yeah, targeting with a bow is a real pain in the butt.  Archery simply isn't viable as a primary weapon.  The damage output is too weak and requires too many skillpoints to be worthwhile as a secondary weapon.

This is the look of the female Dokkalfar I played with in the demo and which I would duplicate for my first charactor.  The face is based on the 1st preset; I only changed the hair style/color, eye color, skin tone, added earrings and a tattoo on her forehead.

Image IPB

She's equipping the Faeblades found towards the end of the House of Ballad's quest in the demo.  I found the Faeblades are great for engaging clustered enemies up close as the hit area is fairly wide, but for single target damage Daggers seem better due to the faster speed.  I'm still undecided whether to have her specialise in Faeblades or Daggers;  her secondary will be Scepters for ranged attack.

I'd go with Faeblades myself. LIke you said, they are good for enemies close together. I believe they are stronger as well. I prefer their charge attack as well. In fact, I've been thinking of using faeblades as a secondary weapon.

You know I LOVE how they have those fate cards to pick and choose your play style with.
The only gripe I had was fighting wolves in melee... it was a bit of a pain.

I liked archery in DA2(one redeeming quality) but in KoA's demo I hated it.

It made me decide to use daggers and chakrams. Chakrams kick AAAAAAASS.

I loved what I played of the demo, pre-ordering this for PC. Then will probably get this for the PS3 as well during an Amazon sale, when my wife inevitable steals the PC version.

Do you have to do any quests in the demo to get the ME3 gear? Or can you just let the timer run out?

You just have to let the timer run out. Of course, the timer doesn't start until you finish the tutorial dungeon and learn how to do fate shift kills.

Exactly.  Their combat is setup in a first person shooter style--they never evolved past 1994 (see: Hexen).  Archery works so well, because that's about the only thing the engine can handle.  Everything else is just flailing until something dies.  Imagine the combat from the Souls series in any of the TES worlds (although more dungeon variety would help too).  That, would be the perfect open world game.

Archery is perfectly viable, it's just a weapon that you have to completely commit to before it actually matures.  Targeting with the bow isn't the only issue, it's targeting in general in that game.  It's awful.  You can be aiming at something with a spell that's directly in front of you, fire and the auto aim decides you were aiming at a box 45 degrees to the side instead.  It's so sticky, with such a large threshold that you can be attacking an enemy, setting up a juggle combo and it will randomly yank you off to target something else.

I have no idea where you're getting Star Wars, and something being "open world" doesn't automatically mean Oblivion had any influence on it--even though the lead creative designer for both Morrowind and Oblivion helped create Amalur.  The game is definitely a mismash of stolen ideas (WoW, Fable, Diablo 2, DA2), but you kind of missed the mark.

Stolen ideas?

Dude. Its video games. Ideas aren't stolen that way.

That's like saying because one game decided to have guns in it that every game afterward with guns stole its idea.

It's utterly derivative.  Everyone who has played the demo without the rabid "enthusiasm" you've been displaying knows exactly where it took all of it's ideas from--there's a huge difference between being influenced, and outright copying.  Every official preview, as well as those currently reviewing the final build agree as well.

But hey, I'm not saying it won't be fun; and most of the previews/reviews in progress are saying that it really is.

That's kind of a valid point. The demo just stunk of Fable and those games left such a bad taste in my mouth its hard to overlook.

Umm... Warhammer came out in October, 1998 while Starcraft was out by April, of the same year.

Warhammer 40k has been around since 1987. Also I'm not sure if this is true but starcraft was orignally going to be a 40k game but they decided to change it to it's own IP. May just be a rumor. Maybe not

"There's a reason why Starcraft appears to be a carbon copy of 40k, as stated, that would be because Starcraft was originally meant to be a 40k game which GW pulled the plug on. Blizz changed just enough to avoid copyright issues and released it anyway, hence the racial similarities."

That's odd, because anyone who has seen the very early prototypes from StarCraft knows it looks nothing at all like how it turned out.  There's a reason it was labled "Pigs in Space".  Blizzard copies everything too, so saying it copied much from Warhammer is probably accurate, but saying that StarCraft was originally intended to be a Warhammer game most likely is not, unless you're suggesting both of the Warcraft games were as well.

Funny side note: A lot of people are saying that WoW looks the way it does because Blizzard copies so much from Todd McFarlane and Joe Madureira, so that's why everyone is associating Amalur's look with WoW.
