After a while every system gets used in games.
Most shooters have regenerating health, or health packs but that does not mean that every game with it is bad, its just a system that works.
Myself I enjoyed the combat since you needed twitch skills AND strategic thinking for some foes.

I found the combat a bit clunky. I am not fond of that kind of 'sticky target' mechanic, but I got used to it.
The graphics aren't to my taste, a bit too bright and colourful but I did like the character models. Nice to see female chars that actually look like they could handle a fight ;-)
Overall I liked it. Seems like it might be a bit of fun and worth a purchase.
This unsolicited and potted review was brought to you by me.

I hope the final product has better programming for the targeting myself. I think a lock-on would have been a good thing to include.

If you pre-order the download off Amazon it's 15% off right now, which is cheaper than Steam probably.
I love Steam and its convenience. In fact, I avoid games that are neither Steamworks nor directly purchasable through the Steam store.

The backstabbing, traps, sneaking, and all that other stuff was pretty awesome.
Sadly I fail quite horribly at the dispelling minigame but for the most part I had a lot of fun.
My only real gripe is that the camera at times does not quite give you a good enough view and you can get bum rushed by lots of angry wolves.
Though I simply love how effective and capable the combat system is really.
I can switch from a bow, to knives, to skills without pausing the game or having to look away from the action.
I will be buying it that is for sure.
Not just because of that elf chick running around in a leather bikini.

Who's the elf in the leather bikini? Any important NPC?
Alyn Shir. She's probably some sort of Dokkalfar secret agent, so it could serve to explain why she's wearing that thing, probably to distract those whom she speaks with ...

It looks good, but I won't have time to finish it before mass effect 3, so I won't be playing til after I played me3 to death.
I really like the character customization, great choices, hopefully more choices in the real thing, and they look good compared to the old haggard look of Skyrim.

And no matter what race you play, Alyn Shir knows your character. Don't know about anyone else, but it hooked me and got me wanting to find out the relationship between Alyn Shir and your character.
Yes it will be interesting finding out how we know each other, i hope i am not disappointed or we don’t find out till the end of the game.

Also, since I'm playing a Dokkalfar woman, I feel like there's something else there. I'm going to see where the story goes and build a backstory in my head once I know most of the details.

Presentation 8.5
Amalur totes an impressive story penned by one of the great fantasy authors of our time, and it takes place in a fantastic fictional world. It’s complex and hard to follow at times, though.
Graphics 8.0
Beautiful environments and solid animations are marred by fairly shoddy-looking character models. I wish lip-syncing was more on-point during dialogue.
Sound 8.0
Music is sparse, but the voice-acting is well-executed and really adds a great deal to the story. Characters have a lot to say, and that’s a good thing.
Gameplay 9.5
The bread and butter of the game. Reckoning sets the bar very high for other games moving forward, and is an absolute pleasure to play.
Lasting Appeal 9.5
I hope you have a hell of a lot of time on your hands, because Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will require all of it for the foreseeable future.
OVERALL.
