Pretty much this.
That and I'm spoiled on Skyrim.

Spent last weekend trying out a pure might greatsword swinging almain female. Compared to my faeblade Shadowcaster, this girl is SLOW and gets interrupted mid-swing so often! It was fun to swing a BFS around and smack trolls / jottuns around for a change. Got boring though ...

Well, I was getting some game time in, but then went back to Skyrim.
And now I'm back to rereading the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, so KoA will have to wait.
Again.

I did a full reboot of Kalasin on Hard run and she's back up to Level 38 with minor tweaks to her abilities but still sporting Faeblades and Bow.
Back in Rathir and the Scholar Arcana, she still dressed up in hexweave tfor her public role as Archsage. Across the sea, however, Dreadscale has become her official Tuatha Slayer getup. (Upon full Shadowcaster, the ability to regen mana from critical hits means the robes can be ditched - plus I've always hated Spiritweave).

I might actually reboot her a 3rd time (yeah, I'm fixated) from Allestar to seriously try out the Dagger-Chakram built from beginning to end. I'm neutral to Daggers, but I have a bias against Chakrams because of the relative loss of mobility. A Faeblade/Chakram build does not seem to mesh too well; IMAO their usage overlap too much.
Skyrim haven't been touched with a rusty greatsword since January '12. As I mentioned long ago, the Shadowcaster is the sort of Rogue-Mage that I can't get from Skyrim. I might reconsider when the DLC starts coming.
Saleswise, I'm not really concerned (400k is for NA only, right?), I just enjoy running through KoA. I'm not into MMO yet, though I would love to see how an Amalur MMO would end up.
Oh, just finished installed Diablo 3, but I won't worry about it sucking me away from KoA or ME3. I have a fixation for dark-skinned redheads that can't be sated from D3.

But yesterday I finally reached my goal of getting to level 12 without going to other areas than the first one. What I did was I fought the guards in the jail. After you fight them once and leave, or resist arrest, if you kill the female guard near the entrance, she drops a key. If you pick up the key, you can freely go into the jail.
I didn't find it out til I was almost to 12, but when you leave and reenter the jail, the two guards respawn and always give you experience. Before I figured this out, I kept getting thrown into jail and that takes a lot of time, especially when you want to fight the guards and it takes 20+ rounds with them.

What a coincidence, I just got Diablo III myself and I also have a thing for dark skinned red-heads. It's a shame the barbarian hair color isn't red, that's the first hair color that comes to mind when I think of barbarians.

My character's a Warlock. On the way, but not quite there.
Won't be a Shadowcaster for months.

Having never left the first area (Dalentarth/Odarath?) which consists of one huge forest with some villages and that here and there, how big is the actual landscape of the game and are all the locations in the game varied in terms of appearence or is it more like 4 main continents (forest, desert, mountains, swamp etc.) with a final dungeon like map at the end?
I have a feeling this game isn't quite as big as I was expecting it to be.

Plains of Erathell - grasslands
Detyre - desert
Klurikon - swamp/jungle
Alabastra - err ... wasteland?
Access to Klurikon & Alabastra are locked to certain parts of the main questline.
@RPGamer13: WRT Diablo 3 Barbarian, I won't be playing it for a while, I'll be starting on the female Monk, Wizard & Demon Hunter first, then maybe get around to making a male Barbarian and Witchdoctor.
As for the jail, I never tried that nor do I care to. The few time she got a booty were mainly due to botching a theft (only a few times early on when I'm still unfamiliar with non-legal actions). Anyway, in my last game, I went on a leveling spree and got as far as level 33 before leaving for Mel Senshir (and I still haven't touched on half the quests available).

Ah ok so there are certain points in the game that are locked out due to the main quest, but there are still plenty of hours in each area would you say?
Surprised this game hasn't got as much fanfare and a shame that 38 Studios look like it's going broke though as the RPG genre could always do with new stalwarts in the future of the industry.

How long it takes may depend on how many sidequest you do or how much time you spend exploring.
On my latest Shadowcaster run, in Dalentarth, besides a fair number of sidequest, I also :
1) advanced the main questline to the point where it continues in Erathell)
1) finished the House of Ballads faction quests (all located within Dalentarth)
started
a) the Scholar Arcania (mage) faction (starts in the city of Ysa, concentrated in Erathell)
ignored:
i) the Warsworn (fighter) faction questline (starts in Shieldring, split among Dalentarth, Erathell and Detyre)
Time clocked with slightly over 17 hours (used fast travel to avoid backtracking through "cleared areas), and Level was 21.
When I have "gotten tired" of playing around in the first 3 areas (my charactor eventually outlevelled most encounters), I finished the House of Valor faction and moved on via the main questline to Klurikon at Level 34, clocking 42 hours.

First look at the KoA MMO.
A shame as it might not even make it to publication, not to mention MMO's really struggle to keep their subscription numbers these days. It may well end up a free-to-play venture if Kurt Schiling really is desperate.
@SupidSeep; Well I've managed to put in about 12 hours into the game and I'm still in Dalentarth, I think I visited Ysa very briefly but didn't stay long there and still have a LOT of side-quests still to do there.
So your post makes me feel positive that I'm gonna be spending a good chunk of time in this game (when I get round to it this weekend), especiallly this summer which tends to be a bit of a draught for games.

I really hoped I'd see that difficulty patch. The game's done with the sort of idealism every great IP has.
