I'm a Boston boy.  I loved Schilling for what he did in 2004.  I even forgave him for going to Rhode Island.  But I couldn't get into KoA.  I had real hope that I would pick up KoA 2, you know?  When they realized what worked in a modern game and what didn't.  I'm really sad to hear that they're in the trouble they're in now.  Damn shame.  This is really the last nail in the old school RPG game's coffin.

The silent protagonist, the mobs respawning, the useless combat...  That killed it for me.  That the quests seemed like WoW quests mashed into a single player game beat the dead horse.  I'll admit the cut scenes were really good... but with a silent protag? 1990-Fail.  What I came closes to grabbing the for was the chakrams and the great animations.  And the way that combat was fast and fun.  The magic kill-cam fate-magic animations were very memorable.

In the end, I hope KoA serves as an example for new games that come out.  Probably a good example of having a good corporate structure to support your business too.  Very sad day.

I'll say it here as well, I hope they get new jobs swiftly as this is a sad time for them.

I wish them all the best of luck.

Damn KoA and Copernicus could've been the start of something great, instead the people that made the games will now wake up tomorrow without a job.

I hate how all this turned out but hopefully they find their feet and someone may want to purchase the IP (*wink* Obsidian/Blizzard *wink*)

I personally don't care much about 38 Studios since they're a new studio and technically, they didn't really develop Amalur (which was done mostly by BHG) however Big Huge Games had a long history with RTS games. It's sad to see them go. I've met some of their guys a couple times. Great bunch of people who really tries to promote the arts in the Maryland area. Wish them the best.

Success and failure go hand in hand. It's a shame they went under...I think Reckoning is overall good and fun but things could be done to make it a lot better. For a first game though it was a good effort. Its a shame we won't be able to see what could have been in successive games.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is destined for a cult following.

No.

I do respect that you have an opinion, but stating something like that makes very many gamers want to nerdrage all over.

NO! NO! NO! NO! (why there's no apparently angry face in the emoticons??)

Phew, I want to vent, but, must... hold. back..

Take comfort, the Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition is coming out sometime this year.

^^ Though I actually think KoA was a really fun and artistically viable game, and am sad that they cannot continue with making games (and patches - as the higher-difficulty one was just around the corner), that does indeed comfort me. :)

I was so sad to hear this. The game was very well made, it's just a shame it didn't work out for them. What a bummer.

Oh boy even worse news for the ex-staff. What a shame.

too bad, i enjoyed the demo but was waiting for an ultimate edition of some sort for not having to buy the dlc, guess it won't happen, just gonna get the regular version
so how is it gonna go from here?
will the dlc (already on sale) vanish from the psn or xboxlive?

I was sad to hear this too. Played the demo and liked it for the most part, reminded me a bit of KOTOR actually. Was waiting for a cheaper price before buying but I suppose my purchase will be too little too late.

Big Problems Need Huge Solutions. Good news looks like Epic Games is buying 38 Studios but not everyone will be so lucky possibly still good to see a company with actual management buying them.

It's nice to see other developers helping out like that, it may seem like there's a light at the end of the tunnel after all.

Epic, huh? I can think of worse companies for 38 Studios to be bought out by - we shall see how things turn out for the KoA franchise and beyond.

Actually Epic didnt buy 38, what they did do was hire a good sized chunk of the Big Huge Games staff for a new studio they're opening in Baltimore. The hiring pretty much kills any chance of there being a Reckoning 2.

I don't think anything KoA related would've made it past the pre-production stage even if 38/BHG were still going. I can't see anyone wanting to do something with the IP.

This game is pretty good overall. Not perfect, but fun and a solid rpg. I'd give it a 8/10

IMO, it's more of an action RPG - storywise it tends to be shallow but offers fair action. It kept me entertained as long as Skyrim.

As for the BHG employees, good to hear that some of them will be getting help. Reminds me of Looking Glass Studios (who made the very first PC game I own: System Shock), that went under when Eidos cut funding.

Really disappointing to hear the news about 38 Studios. KoA had its faults but overall I really enjoyed it. Things felt like they dragged on a bit (I did all sidequests), combat was extremely easy and I peaked pretty early but the areas and the lore overshadowed those things for me.

The IP has/had a lot of potential and I was keeping an eye out for Copernicus news. The trailer they put out had some pretty impressive environments.

Steve Danuser former Creative Director posted on his personal blog nothing new more of a personal read. Kind of a terrible read.
