Why didn't everyone play Kingdoms of Amalur?
I think part of the reason is the price, at least on the PC side.
The price on Steam has been 59.99 for the longest time, only recently dropped to 29.99 and now it is one of the top sellers this week.
I played the demo last year when it came out and enjoyed it, but I've been waiting all this time for the price to drop below $10. If it's available on Steam, I'm probably not going to buy the Origin version unless it is even cheaper, so I'll continue waiting on this one.
Most games I usually buy about 1-2 years after release when they are less than $10. Only buy a couple of games each year at full price.

Honestly, the price is (was) way to steep for a year old game.
And it came out while Skyrim was still everywhere...
Having played it only recently, I can say it was a very good day, and I'm very sorry these guys were forced to shut down.
The were definitely on the right track, and for a debut game, it was excellent.

People knew where they were spending their money. Skyrim which was a colossal success and Mass 3 which at the time was a highly anticipated finale to a great series.
Amalur should've been held back till later in the year.

Woot woot woot, I bought the whole KoA:R package on steam at the discounted price (I refuse to purchase the DLCs via Origin, and the discounted package is only a couple of dollars more than what I would have paid for the DLsC on Origin) and after some fiddling (I had to link it back to my EA email to access my pre-order bonuses), I can now transplant Kalasin's Finale savegame over to play the DLCs.

The colossi one is kinda lame, but the piratey one is fun as hell. Forewarning.
I think I liked the pirate DLC more than the main game itself

The assets went up for auction. Supposedly 20 parties were interested in the auction, but only five participated, and the rights to Amalur weren't sold to anyone. D:

Looks like its all over for Amalur.

It's a shame the company went down. I really enjoyed KOA. It did have an unfortunate release date, though.I'm guilty of ignoring it until my Skyrim craze started to die down...
Same here.
With so many great games to play like AC4, it is pretty much on the bottom of my "to play" list.

Well, as we all know, 38 Studios and Big Huge Games went kaput after terrible management of funding.

That's a damn shame 'cause I was really looking forward to KoA developing as a franchise.

According to Gamespot, they might still attempt to sell Amalur later though.

Given Rhode Island only made a few hundred thousand dollars in their auction, I'm guessing they put some ridiculous price for Amalur and Copernicus, given they need to make up millions and millions.

It's possible, but that argument could also be reversed. Maybe companies offered little confident in the knowledge that 38 Studios had to sell no matter what.

What the hell's up with that?

Eh. That's the way business works. It's even quite possible that the other fifteen weren't invited to come. You get all sorts of ya-hoo's applying when public bids go in.
For instance, you can have a one-man group bidding on a multi-million dollar government contract and they will have to be given the same opportunity to apply as a legitimately established group or business who has the infrastructure to complete the task, as opposed to a guy living in his mom's basement. In that case, that guy is "interested" in the big for business... but he's not a real, legitimate contender for it.
But, on the flip side, I don't know any of the details of the so-called auction. Maybe they found the starting bid to be too high. Maybe they found out who some of the bidders were and thoughtthey wouldn't be able to win a bidding war. Maybe it was free-taco day.

I think Amalur was released at a bad time- between Skyrim and Mass 3.

This more or less. I think Skyrim in particular cast a very large shadow over Amular.
I supose you can also add the fact that it was made by a relatively new company that had no prior hit games to thier name and the 'cartoony' art style.
For the record I loved it. But I wouldn't have given it a chance or a second glance if it weren't for the ME3 cross promotional items that we got from downloading the freee demo. To be blunt EA didn't promote it well enough, unless you deliberatly went looking for info on it you probably would not know the IP existed, I do not recall coming across any previews on any gaming websites or any of the video game magazines I read.

Yeah, I hope Rhode Island doesn't give up yet. I just hope they aren't trying to sell it for something ridiculous.
