As the above states basically after beating the game multiple times with the same soldier, I still cannot decide really what wins, when it comes to the overall "better" gun.
Therefore, I"m going to ask all you guys what you think is better and why, Heightened and Hardened are both plausible. I personally think Rev may be better but I drop **** with the Mattock. Basically looking for other people's opinions on this. I'm more of a min/maxer so I'm not really one for personal preference.

As someone who has used both, it comes down to preference. Both guns can rip opponents to shreds. But they are also polar opposites of each other.

The Mattock has at best about 80 bullets. The Revenant can have over 500. The former is extremely accurate. The other is extremely inaccurate.

I like how I can pick off enemies easy with the Mattock, but the Revenant gives me the peace of mind with my ammunition reserves. With Adrenaline Rush, both guns' killing power goes up. But a big kicker is that the Revenant muzzle climb is nullified which is one of its major drawbacks while in Adrenaline Rush. With Heightened Adrenaline Rush, you can basically keep firing the Revenant with improved accuracy and no muzzle climb, which leads me to favour Heightened more than Hardened (which I may use when I'm getting shot at a lot).

Long and short, I prefer the Revenant.

It comes down to preference and play style.

For example, I'm a Widow Infiltrator player, so when I play my Soldier, I prefer to engage at long and mid-ranges, using the Widow to one-shot mooks at extreme to long range, then closing in to use the Mattock to deal with bigger, stronger enemies at long to mid-range. Here, I use Heightened AR.

However, if I were to use a Revenant, then my Soldier would use a Viper at long range, then close in at mid to long ranges with the Revenant. Because I'll be using the Revenant's high ROF, large magazine size, and damage as a form of cover fire (as opposed to the methodical, well-aimed shots of the Mattock), I'd prefer Hardened AR to lengthen the time I spend out of cover.

The Mattock is the most broken weapon in ME2; it's also bugged when used in ARush. The Revenant is a pretty poor weapon compared to the Mattock in terms of effectiveness.

I'm not a fan of the Soldier class, but I always go for the Revenant b/c it's a very cool weapon to use. If you're interested in pure killing power, go for the Mattock - there is nothing that can come close to this beast. If fun is what you're looking for, you're probably better off with the Rev (though 'fun' is personal preference of course).

I agree with Bozorgmehr. The Mattock on a soldier is a game breaker. The Revenant is one of the best weapons normally - but the Mattock in AR beats every other weapon in every situation. Of course it's up to you whether you use it or not, but in my opinion it is so overpowered that it just isn't fun.

If you are a min/maxer, the Mattock wins out over every other assault rifle in the hands of a Soldier.

Even without any upgrades it does twice as much damage per shot as the Revenant with an even greater rate of fire, and you will likely only notice a reduction in RoF using Heightened AR. Hardened AR causes virtually no reduction in RoF, as you can still empty the entire magazine before the time dilation wears off.

Ammo may seem like a game changer for the Mattock, but considering that almost every ammo pickup will give 16 or more rounds back, you can really only run out of ammo during fights of attrition where you are staying in one spot the entire time.

The fact that you can't get the Widow then. And that's pretty much the coolest weapon in the game. Well that and the Claymore.

This is basically the way I feel.

I recognize that the Mattock is clearly clearly the winner in terms of sheer damage, and to a degree, flexibilty. This is the gun you want if kickin' A is all you want.

But the Revvy takes it for me in terms of ease and fun factor. Sure, the Mattock kills *faster*, but after playing so long, that starts to lose some of its meaning (the Rev. still kills very fast). Apart from having to close into enemies a bit more, I actually find the Revvy way easier to use, physically, esp. vs boss enemies like YMIRS and Praetorians. There are many days when I just don't feel like mashing the trigger button, and unlike the Mattock, the Revvy doesn't punish me for that.

I'm in the same boat. There is no argument the Mattock is the superior weapon in terms of effectiveness, but it's so effective it breaks the entire weapon system and reduces the gameplay to a joke.

The Revenant, on the other hand, is just plain fun. Being able to just fire it up and hold down the trigger, spraying rounds everywhere like you're Ripley in the Alien Queen's nest, is awesome. It was that reason which eventually convinced me to mod it onto my Adept, I already have my trusty Locust for straightforward combat.

I mean, this pretty much sums it up.

And, of course, it looks cool.

Take Mattock if you want Godlike mode.

Take Revenant if you want a weapon that is not flawless, but really fun to use.

Also, that gorgeous song the Revvy sings when you crank her out. Shoot a bit, hit AR, and listen to her go. It's almost like you're chainsawing mooks with bullets.

I don't understand why people say it's overpowered. I've been using the mattock and it is pretty strong, but sometimes - randomly- it does almost no damage. I don't understand why. I'll be head shotting an enemy and sometimes it requires 3-4 bullets othertimes I go through an entire clip...it seems random to me.

I've never seen this issue.  Are you playing on the PC or XBox??

Maybe you got tired and couldn't tap fire fast enough? The Mattock's only as devastating as you can use it - ie: ~5+ consecutive headshots in about the time needed for 4 Revvy shots in ARush or something like that.

Maybe it has something to do with incendiary ammo? I usually have that ammo power equipped on mattock

Incendiary rocks on the Mattock. It's probably the best thing you can put on it. Incendiary Ammo makes the Mattock a virtual rapid-fire mini grenade launcher.

The problem is likely something to do with your tap rate or accuracy... I know when I'm tired, I cannot use the Mattock well at all (for both of the above reasons).

Any ammo power on the Mattock rocks pretty hard IMHO. I don't think that's the problem.
Is it possible that you're missing guys or hitting them in the neck instead of the head?

While using Adrenalin Rush you should be landing tons of headshots. Outside of AR I have no chance of consistently landing headshots [xbox] at a high rate of speed so maybe things are going too fast outside of AR to keep up with????
