I'm playing a blood mage character, and all she can do is take control of one enemy unit for maybe 20 seconds or less. Why can't she make merchants lower their prices and stuff like that?:
Scarlet: (blood control) "You will lower your prices."
Merchant: "Uhhh, yes master. All items are one copper piece."
;)

Plus, every once in a while, a blood mage Warden should have had to fight off a demon while they slept, or fended off templars. No one even bats an eyelash when you use blood magic. Wynne should refuse to learn it, and Alistair should argue about it with you.

Blood magic can influence people's minds (you see it in DA2), but the PC does not have the ability to do this in either game. Maybe the devs thought it would be too powerful, and blood magic is SUPPOSED to be powerful if you know what you're doing, but having the ability to use it as something like a Persuade/Intimidate check based on spellpower would have been cool.

I have heard there is a cut(?) sequence in Broken Circle where, after defeating Uldred, Wynne tries to betray you to the Templars if you are a blood mage.

And if you think Templars not batting a lash at your blood magic is bad, wait until you play DA2 ;)

That scene where Wynne exposes you as a blood mage to the circle was removed prior to release.

Blood mages could also influence a person's thoughts through their dreams. It's not just that they draw their magic from the life force of others that makes them dangerous. Avernus, from the Warden's Keep dlc, did quite a bit of mind control on others while in the fade while people slept. That's also how Levi Dryden was able to find the keep on his own.

I guess that it really is inherently evil if it involves mind control. In the standard story, Wynne never turns on you. At the end of the game when Morrigan explains the ritual, one of her lines is "It's similar to blood magic, but I suspect that means little to you.", or something like that. She says this if you are a blood mage, reaver, or an assassin. Other than that; nothing. I was disappointed because you couldn't recruit Jowan, and that blood mage lady that you meet in the tower just disappears, even though she aggrees to join you.

At the very early stages of development, Jowan was supposedly a possible companion recruit, though he got cut. It's possible that the same thing happened with that blood mage in the tower. Bioware thought that more than two mages would be redundant, and yet they gave us 5 warriors, and Sten+Oghren both use the same weapon tree.

It could have been like trading Alistair for Loghain, where Wynne decides to leave if you bring in the blood mage. Actually, having 3 mage companions would make it possible to have a party of 4 mages.

Too bad you couldn't use blood control on Loghain. You could make him put on a dress and make him run around in the streets singing "I'm a Little Teapot".
