It's easier to visualize how "Citadel space" or any other whatever space would be distributed if you look at EVE Online's star map. It's not like political bodies in ME control vast swathes of open space; they control a mass relay and a small area around it, and depending on their fleet resources they may control a few mass relays that connect to their 'home' relay.

This is as close as you can get to a proper *territorial* map of the Mass Effect universe. Less than ONE PERCENT of the friggen milky way has even been explored, let alone colonized. As such any map would be lines and spheres. Lines between relays, and small sphere showing solar systems colonized and connected to said relays.

Remember people, LESS THAN ONE PERCENT.

I just want the cool zooming galaxy map from the Mass Effect 1 beta.

That never existed. It was an animated concept.

I am assuming that it didn't end up in the actual game because it didn't work, so I'll have to say no to that.

The borders wouldn't be anywhere near as expansive as shown in that map.

There would probably be a few isolated patches for each individual faction (ie. Alliance, Batarian Hegemony, etc.) with the vast majority of the map left uncovered. If there was an option to simplify the codes (ie. clump all Citadel races into one uniform faction) then there would be a large number of blue "dots" on the map, representing what could be collectively identified as "Citadel Space", although each region would be isolated due to the limited development centered around the mass relays, and lack of control over outlying systems...

Man, I love geeking out over this kind of stuff. :)

Hmm coloured systems instead of 'atches' of space. That might be better actually - it doesn't add clutter ot the map, but still achieves the desired effect of knowing the political alignment of the system you're in. Good idea!

My galaxy map would look like skittles just threw up on it! I would hate that I could care less about boundaries in space and more about which system I need to go into the find my objective.

I agree completely, my problem with the galaxy map is all the little flags, I buy all the star charts that I can find and sometimes there are so many of those flags sticking up I can't see where the galaxies are or read the flags because they overlap each other,

PLEASE GET RID OF THE GALAXY MAP FLAGS (or quest flags on the galaxy map, whatever you want to call them), there has to be a better way to indicate a quest objective on the galaxy map then those damn flags.

To be fair, I can't see how this would be an issue with being able to see the map. I mean, you could have say:
- Blue systems = Alliance
- Teal = Citadel
- Brown = Batarian
- Red = Reaper forces
- Yellow = Terminus
- Green = Geth

Easy.

As for the plot flags, I partially agree. they do hide systems 'under' them which is very annoying, but there's an easy solution - just make the flags smaller.

Those flags really are an eyesore.

What I would love to see on the galaxy map is...

The circle around the individual systems coloured up to represent their owners. - This would allow those that wish to know who owns what to find out without it spoiling the overall appearance of the map and would forgo the need of coloured up "sectors".

The circles around any systems with mission objectives could flash or pulse slightly, with the flags only appearing when you select or mouse over the system. -
Thus removing the clutter and maintaining the asthetic of the map whilst still having the information readily availiable.
