Hi. I am interested in this game, but unsure. I know its an RPG, but is it an Action RPG? When I say action, I mean like mass effect, no waiting for your attack to come out. Are there comboes and such with your weapons, I dont know what this will be like... I heard this like Boulder gate, but I hated that game, is this different enough to get me interested?
Whats this game about gameplay wise?

If you hated Baulder's gate, then don't bother with this game. Fighting is the same, you have no control over your characters every attack like in Mass Effect.

Gameplay wise you can expect something similar to Baldur's Gate - but much improved and leaning towards combat elements you would see from games like Mass Effect. It has a pause feature that allows you to stop the action in order to micromanage your (4) characters and effect a tight strategy - but using it is optional. You can keep it fast paced and thrilling with a combination of customizable companion AI and very flexible user interface.

The melee combat animations seem solid and the interaction between characters duking it out in combat seem really smooth. Warriors and Rogues both get plenty of abilities to spice things up and a ton of cool looking animations, from shield bashing your enemy to the ground all the way to timely decapitations. Some of this is temporary flare (death animations when you kill a big boss look cool, but otherwise aren't vital to gameplay). Alot of it however lends very well to create an involving, satisfying combat experience.

On top of that if you enjoyed the stories and characters in Mass Effect, you will love the story and characters in Dragon Age: Origins. Buckle in and expect a game that will challenge you, excite you, and immerse you in a world that is not your own.

Enjoy.

This is not like Diablo of Mass Effect in which you attack about as often as you click.

Combat is directed, you give it a target and your character goes at it. I think you can click special abilities on your own, but that is about the extent of your involvement. I think :)

I have to agree that you'll probably not like it if you hated Baldur's Gate.

Maybe, maybe not. I dislike BG intensely and am quite looking forward to this game.

Fighting is not the same. For one thing, it's real time instead of turn-based. The system is also different. Playing a fighter in BG could be very boring as you didn't get any neat abilities.

If anything, it's like Knights of the Old Republic. A far more enjoyable game than BG.

There is slight differences, BG use D&D mechanic. While DA:O mechanic doesn't depart too far from it, but it does eliminate the limited spells/memorized spells mechanic in favor of mana/lyrium usage. As far as combos goes, I don't there is one. But chaining skills is possible as long as stamina permits. You could try not using pause in DA:O, but you will likely be wiped out in hard and long battle. Inevitably, pausing is the only way to keep pace with difficult battles.

What aspect of BG didn't you like? Thinking about it after reading more replies, you have a point in that it's not cut and dried.

There are no weapon combos, but you can chain moves as long as your stamina hholds out (as someone mentioned). Spells can be chained though.

Varenus, there's no need for comments like that. I suggest refraining from that sort of thing in the future.

There are certainly differences between DA:O and the Baldur's Gate line. However, folks aren't joking when they say DA:O is the spiritual successor of Baldur's Gate. That's the line that actually got me hooked on the game.

Now if we can only drum up support for the successor to Icewind Dale.......

Just watch some videos and you will realize how the combat system works. Basically it's more party based with tactics from skills you learn so the combat delay on sword swings are roughly two seconds and it's automatic except using abilities.

Baldurs gate is old so if you played it recently you probably hated it because of the bad graphics, but the game play is similar. It would be easier to say, if you liked Neverwinter Nights 2 then you will probably like this game too even though Dragon Age is most likely 10 times better.

A number of elements make Dragon Age more appealing to me than Baldur’s Gate.

First, there’s character creation and advancement. In both the BG titles, you had to roll for attributes as well as health every level. I prefer point buy and having a steady increase each level. Merely making it through Candlekeep and to the Friendly Arm Inn can be grueling if you roll poorly.

Dragon Age seems a though ‘a couple bad rolls’ won’t kill you and a couple good ones won’t make a hard fight easy. I recall getting slaughtered by gibberlings when I had a human warrior with Imoen, Montivar, and (the one insane mage.) Not because my tactics were bad, but because the gibberlings got three lucky hits in. Alternatively, the last time I played BG, I beat the ogre with the belts with only two points of damage done to the party.

We mentioned real time combat and all the classes having their own active talents. I’d also like to add that health, mana, and stamina regenerate quickly after combat. Toss all three of those together and you have a game where each combat requires all party members to participate and you have to juggle them all in real time. Many times in BG, I’d have my mages hanging out near the back doing nothing, or just auto-attacking with the sling, because I might need that spell during the next encounter and I only had x number of spells I could use a day. There were also times when my fighters’ job was to just stand there and be hit while my mage cast a spell.

To me, this translates into less downtime, more incentive to use all the neat powers I have, combat that has a more organic pace, and for each class to be important during the fight.

There are other reasons, but this topic is more about combat than other aspects of the game.

Awesome response Maria. I think if the OP reads it, he'll be much better able to judge whether or not DA:O is for him.

So is combat similar to Final Fantasy 12? If so thats not bad, but I still dont quite get how the game works. I have never played a fantasy MMO, so I cant relate to that. The closest thing to an MMO I have played was Phantasy Star Online, and thats an action rpg.

Anyone know if for sure if characters appearance can be changed after the initial creation process?

They cannot.
