Much complaint has been made about Alistair's appearance in DA2, and I was one of those complaining. Now, I also mentioned that I found the CC very limiting in the types of faces that were created, and that I wasn't sure better was possible, but I did complain greatly.

It now appears that this was both unjustified and unfair. In order to test his theory that lighting was the culprit here, not the character model, tmp7704 put Alistair's head on Ander's body and sent him out in the daylight. This was the result.

As you can see, he no longer looks old, tired and chunky. Within the limitations of the new engine, the modeler actually did a very good job. We just couldn't see it. Because of this, and because of aspersions I made toward her creation, I feel the need to make a personal apology.

I'm very sorry that I assumed that it was the model/morph which was at fault. I was entirely wrong, and offer my most sincere apologies. It must have been very difficult to hear us all saying bad things about your work, while knowing that the work you'd done was actually very good. Again, I apologize and also thank tmp7704 for pointing out this injustice.

Yeah, he does look significantly better in that light.

Yep lighting was particularly bad in the 'King Alistair' scene. And the bad version of the 'Swooping' line didn't help any. But when I saw him as a Grey Warden version I thought he looked much better. Not as nice as the shot above but certainly better.

I wonder if a change of lighting could possibly fix poor Teagan...

It is fascinating how important lighting is. I mean from this to this?

I suspect 'Drunken' Alistair was really drowning his sorrows in pie.

That's a game engine thing, and therefore a programming issue, as far as I know, so no blame can be placed at the feet of the person making the character. Any of us who've tried to make Alistair in the CC can attest to how difficult it is to create his facial features or bone structure. For that reason, I always placed more blame on the game engine, but I had NO idea that she'd actually achieved such a good result.

Hopefully in a different thread. I'd really like the focus of this one to stay on the fact that the modeler has been unjustly blamed for appearance issues she had nothing to do with.

Still the modeler's fault for not doing it properly within the limitations ;)

I really don't know what you mean. Within the limitations of what's possible, this is entirely good work.

I always thought Warden Alistair looked good enough.

His drunk morph is obviously the worst, so it probably looks bad regardless of lighting, and the King morph suffered for the bad lighting.

I've always thought the problem lied with the character creator, not the person who modeled him. The giveaway is that the men in the game in general are hideous.

Probably a combination of lighting/shadow/model departments not communicating properly. And the CC isn't as good as DAO.

Yea, the philtrum is what really throws it off.  It might be that way because of clipping with the teeth.  I think the mouth could be a little wider too.

I was saddened by the limitations of the new CC as opposed to the flexibility of the Origins CC, so I found this to be no surprise.

I think his lips could also be a little bit higher. Just a little.

For what's worth, the drunk Alistair in normal lighting looks like this:

it's essentially the same morph in all cases. The lighting makes the whole difference Image IPB
