Despite the criticism that Dragon Age 2 gained for choices and combat, I think some characters were handled very well and were unique just like with Origins. If Dragon Age 3 goes down the route of adding more stories revolving around characters then the result would surely be good. Instead the Dragon Age series seems to be going down the route of choices with consequences and was more focused on choices for Dragon Age 2 instead of something greater and at the centre of RP games; characters. Some characters in Dragon Age 2 just seemed bland and generic, often offering no significent background information while others seemed unique and had their own stories, background and what not. Even their motives were handled in a way which got the player thinking and leads to debates among the boards here.

Origins was just the introduction to The Dragon Age world and was greatly handled. When I first saw the game. I thought it would be terrible. I was so wrong. Most of the characters in the game were handled very well and seemed believable. Loghain Mac Tir is presented as a villian but as you learn more about his character, you see that he's not exactly a villain. There's a lot of learn about him and his background just as there's a lot of learn about Duncan and pretty much all of the companions.

Dragon Age 2 wasn't an introduction to The Dragon Age world and thus only dealt with one conflict mainly and that was the conflict between mages and Templars and surely Dragon Age 3 will still revolve around this conflict. I think that while some characters are handled in a good way in Dragon Age 2, some just seemed bland due to not much information about them being available. We have Isabella who appears just as some loose woman (and is!) but there's more to her than meets the eye and then we have Meredith whose harsh opinions about mages are because she witnessed her sister turn into an abomination and kill 70 people. In fact, if she hadn't had betrayed me, I would have supported her fully in rebuilding the circle after destroying it.

Other characters however such Aveline; feel like very bland and uninteresting characters and what you see with Aveline is what you get. There feels to be an important part missing and her background was rather lacking. She had the potential for a great female companion but I rather felt emphasis was put on her strength as a woman rather than anything else and it's such a shame no romance was available with her because I generally hated romancing Isabella (a woman who sleeps with everyone is not fit for a champion) and Merril (An idiotic blood mage? No thanks?). I also felt that Merril was a rather weak character who relied greatly on her background in Origins from which I had forgotten her from because she was just that unmemorable.

I think there are good characters in Dragon Age 2 but some just seemed bland. Especially Carver.

People with few flaws are usually bland. Other than being socially awkward with Donnic, Aveline was generally a flawless person. She was brave, loyal, competent and understanding. As Merrill remarked, she should be arresting Hawke for all the questionable things Hawke does. In fact she should be locking Varric up and throwing the key away. I like the fact that Aveline's romance is with someone else rather than Hawke. It is nice to have a romance that is not centered on the main character.

I loved Aveline too. The only thing I find ironic is that to me she only starts getting interesting once Wesley's out of the picture (but then again everything before year 2 is wrong IMO, I keep wanting to write a thread about that but I'm afraid there's enough bashing going on for now ^^).

Aveline, Merrill, Bethany, and Sebastian have all been accused of being bland and it's simply not the case.

People just seem to like duckheads. Don't get me wrong; I loved everyone else too. They were all just a different sort duck up.

I don't see a problem with any of the companions. The problem is that Bioware have almost always had amazing antagonists in past games and that's not the case here. Meredith had potential, but she's just not in the game long enough to feel strongly about (and given that the playable part of the game covers 7 years, that really shouldn't be the case). She's neither a villain you love to hate, like Irenicus, nor a more sympathetic antagonist, like Loghain. She's just there, in the background.
I felt far more strongly about Petrice.

Have you Rivaled Aviline? She's one of the deepest characters in the game, ironically because she doesn't have a romance, I think

@CalJones I think the Arishok is a memorable antagonist who lives up to his DA:O mystique. Great presence, voice-over and dialogue especially for what little screen time he gets. To me he's at least as good as Loghain.

Aveline's character isn't really bland, though she did get more interesting when her love interest quests started. Though I think that's just a given as those were well done.

I found The Arishok was just a Sten clone but just with a few more words and horns.

They clearly have the same mental rigidity that seems typical of their society but I think they're different. Although he did massacre a farmhold and turns against you at some point, Sten never loses his calm in conversation, unlike the Arishok who sounds quite jumpy (probably because of his bigger responsibilities). Sten has a sweet side and a deadpan humour than the Arishok doesn't seem to have, actually, the Arishok sounds more pessimistic. Like the Arishok, Sten dispises humans, mages etc., but he seems to let them be, ultimately finds his certainty within himself, while the Arishok is all Qun, Qun, Qun. I disagree dear Elton !

While it's nice and all to have interesting characters, but I feel that making them too special doesn't have a place in this game. The reason for this is the premise of the game, a simple schmuk becoming the champion. Companions that are more interesting would in my opinion simply steal too much of the spotlight. Some people are already complaining about this (for example about Anders).
The only companion I didn't like was Carver, with Fenris being somewhere in the middle. But that's simply a matter of taste. Generally I didn't find them inferior in any way to the DA:O ones, though I can see why they could be an acquired taste, having more radical personalities.
