The PC version of Mass Effect has a new custom UI to suit its platform. That was a good idea.

As much as it sucks to say it, I'd rather BioWare do something like ME1 where they released the PC port later, being able to give it time to have actual PC-centric features as opposed to rushing out all versions at once.

Same here. I bought ME1 on consoles and bought it again on PC for the UI. I have no problem with waiting what I do have a problem with is a UI that doesn't take advantage of my 105 (?) keys and mouse.

I'd prefer them to design it for PC first, then port. Its easier to remove and streamline than it is to add stuff in.

Without making this too much of a console vs pc post(I'm merely offering observations), pc's are generally better than consoles about 6 months after their release. So when a console doesn't get an update and remains that way for years, it's exactly the same as a pc that doesn't get upgraded. But while pc's can be upgraded here and there, there's no working around it with consoles, so if it's old, it really is holding everyone back.

As Neppakyo has been saying, cross platform games are sometimes limited on the computer because the consoles can't keep up. I am following Battlefield 3 with great interest, not only because DICE said their main focus is the pc platform, they're developing for the pc first and foremost, then taking what they can to the consoles. This sounds so sensible, but as I've never made a game I wouldn't really know.

People like to say pc gamers are whingers and whiners, entitled, this and that, and generally making what they think are clever remarks. That's not to say some pc gamers are any better at times. But the sheer number of useless ports that have polluted the pc scene has obviously made most pc gamers regard cross platform games with a great degree of cynicism. A famous example, it wasn't until gigs worth of patches came out before the game was playable. If you're saying that when you buy a product that doesn't work as it should, you just shelve it and move on without saying anything, then I'd call you a liar.

edit : Brockololly, that didn't seem to help Lionhead and Fable 3.

I have to say, I love the fading UI in DA2. I am hoping ME3 replicates this mechanic for their UI as well. I would also like to see DA2 allow us to toggle the mini-map to be on or off.

Screen real-estate is crucial to me :D

Very well said Kilshrek, pretty much what I think.

Perhaps for the next gen consoles they can take a page from the PC. Right now you can change harddrives in the 360 (harder since its MS) and the PS3 (Easy, just slap any laptop hd in and you're gold). Perhaps make the memory and GPU modular? Like down the line when lack of memory is a problem, the company can release a module upgrade for memory to increase the size.

and so on.. you get my point hehe

The ability toolbar NEEDS to be brought to consoles.

The radial menu is a pain. I end up only using the six abilities bound to my buttons because I forget about/they're a pain to access the abilities hidden in the radial menu.

Hell, the N64 already had modular memory with the Expansion Pak upgrade:

I have a 24" monitor and 42" tv, that doesn't mean I don't still value screen real-estate.

Sit further back? lol.

Or an ability to toggle what you want to display.

Toggles could add a lot and please a lot of people. Sadly developers never think to use them.

Toggles would be a good idea and based on the platform have abilities on or off that will help with performance. I don't think developing for one platform over another is a good idea, for the other platform could suffer and that doesn't seem like good business or caring about their fans that play on the other platform.

the days of pc games taking advantage of the pc are coming to an end. people just want to put out the same game for everyone. But you got mods to add it all :D

So basically what you're saying is, consoles are dumbing down games ;)

Codex UI(and by some extension menu UI),
for the love of Pete, bring back the ye olde look. Please I
implore you Bioware. Looking up codex entries in DA 2 is a yawn fest,
only because there's only the text to look at. There was nothing to
enrich it, nothing to give it feel or a life.

Did your version of DA:O ship with something extra? DA:O just had text for the codex, like DA2.

When you think about it though, TW2 has very sparse UI.

It's all designed in the hope it would suceed on console. That's the financial reality of development these days.

The best case scenario would be what TW2 did - design for console UI & gameplay but create your software to take advantage of the superior technology of the PC.

We won't see a DA:O style PC to console port very often, since the money is made in the opposite direction. Apparently, even DA:O sold more on console than PC.

Yeah, it was created with PC in mind first, and scalability for consoles. Just saying all multiplatform games should take the same approach. Everyone would get a better game for it

I wish I could find it, but I read somewhere a bioware dude said (since there are no actual DAO PC figures around) that DAO sold more than each console, but not more than the consoles combined. So roughly 2 million on PC.

EDIT: @ Kilshrek

The DAO UI is so much better looking than the console version...

I hate the DA:O codex in the console version. You can't really tell what's new and it is basically just a series of long, annoyingly situated lists. Made them hell to read.

And its silly. If the codex is going to take up the full screen anyway, there is no real reason that it can't look good. Oblivion managed to have books that looked kind of like real books. Same with the notebook in Uncharted.

Looked like a book.

One codex I am really liking so far is the The Old Republic's Codex. It looks great and filling up looks to be a fun task. I know I enjoy exploration and reading about the lore for an area or creature.

I know TOR is an MMO but the codex looks great.

Absolutely.

If they change nothing else between the console and PC versions, they should unbundle commands that are tied to the same input.  I hated that in ME2 one button triggered just about everything.  Why can't I map those different functions to different keys?

I want a Tetris grid inventory like Neverwinter Nights. That is how inventory should be done.

NWN easily had BioWare's best inventory system.  That is the standard to which they should aspire.

Lists are bad.  Lists are always bad.  There's no way to overcome the fundamental problems with a list inventory without abandoning the list format.

At the very least, an optional chatlog would be great. Sometimes, I miss party banter because I wasn't expecting it. Now, if I had a chatlog, I could simply scroll up and read what I missed.
But if you truly want to make a hardcore RPG (don't get me wrong, I am well aware that such games are no longer created) a BG or NWN tactical look is a must.

I disagree, strongly.  Actually, DA2's inventory is pretty functional - the only real problem is the uncommunicative and generic names, and the star system being so profoundly useless for the mass of magic jewellery you pick up.

Dealing with the hordes of generic jewellery in NWN inventory would be even worse.
