I have played through DAO a few times now. In one game I had Hero as a battlemage and that created an overlap in abilities with Morrigan. Often Morrigan was left in camp, and I did not even use her in the final battle with the archdemon. The only mage I really made much use of in that game was Hero.
In my current game I am playing Hero as an archer. This creates an overlap in abilities with Leliana, and it has been interesting trying to decide how to work around that overlap. In previous games, the combat team has been an archer, a mage, and two front-line melee fighters. The archer there was always Leliana, who developed quite naturally into the chief lock picker, trap disarmer, and thief. When the main character is being played as an archer, there is the possibility to develop Hero into a replacement for Leliana, and there is a possibility to play with two archers.
Mostly because I like having Leliana as part of the team, I seem to have slowly decided to change the combat team to two archers and two melee fighters. At first I thought that not having a mage along would severely weaken the team. It has not been the handicap I thought it would be, though. It may actually be a stronger team. How they will fare in the final battle remains to be seen, but my plan is to continue with this team all the way to the end. Should be interesting.
Out of curiosity, however, I thought I would ask those of you who have played Hero as archer: how did you make use of Leliana? Can Hero replace Leliana the same way he/she can replace Morrigan?

If you build Leliana the same things: Bards, all the Archer tree, the deft-hand, etc, so there is no reason to pick her in your team. But unless you need one more person who is good vs crowd, Leliana should be an awesome candidate with her captivating song and scattering fire, and if you need one more range attacker in your team, she should be nice, too.
For the case of Morrigan, you don't want to have too much nuker in your team, so she should be out of the battle for most of the time. But if you miss the entropy tree (Morrigan is the expert of this talent tree), you can pick her to boost the damage and control the battle better.

You've replaced Leliana the second you give yourself Deft Hands, whether you're an archer or not. If you're the one opening chest or disabling traps, there is no need for her. Unlike mages, having more than 1 archer is not really practical or optimal<_<.
If you're a Mage, your role will effect whether Morrigan is viable or not. Taking the role of the healer allows Morrigan to be an amazing dps/cc/offhealer. But if you are the nuker, then Wynne would make a better mage to replace her with. I would even go as far as being able to go 3 mages (1 Nuker/1 CC/1 Heals) and archer Leliana for some devastating shenanigans:devil:.

Yes, I suppose there are a good number of possible teams that can be played. 3 mages and an archer could be interesting.
I'm at lvl 18 for Hero right now and am about to go into the Anvil of the Void. So that will be the biggest test yet of the team of 2 archers and 2 melee fighters (both with templar talents) that I have been trying out. If they make it through that, they should be good to go to the end.
It is sort of interesting to use an extra archer in place of a mage. Helps to keep the game interesting.

I am running 3 mages and an archer in my current playthru now. Works pretty well so far. My hero mage is the nuker/bloodmage, Wynne is healer and Morrigan is CC with the entropy line. Tactics set to range for all. Save the trouble of a melee fighter running into my fireball or AOE spell like inferno or storm of century. Only thing is the lyrium potion consumption, they are drinking the thing like root bear! Now only set Wynne to drink "least powerful lyrium potion when mana < 10%". Still able to manage and great fun!

Cool.
My graphics card is only 512 mb, and I find that certain mage spells and demons that explode into fireballs when they die sometimes cause the game to crash. Not too often, but at generally at some very inconvenient moment.
I might give 3 mages and an archer a try some day, but I have some doubts my computer will be able to handle it.

3 mage + archer rogue is the strongest combo in the game. You have everything covered. The mages could dominate the game without a forth member. A second archer on the other hand has nothing to contribute to the table. Anything an archer can do, a mage can do better... except opening stuff up. I like Yokwai's set up. It simply dominates. The only thing I would do is make Morrigan and Wynne Bloodmages to negate the need for lyrium potions. I had a PC AW/BM that tanked this group and it was a blast.

I did an all archer group (me + Lel + Zev + Shale) once and it was great. Very powerful group. You're dealing massive damage from afar before the enemy even reach you. And certain areas (Haven mountain/Bloodmage house) are easiest with a ranged party. Ambushes are trickiest, but Shale's great for taking the heat off...
You could always just build Lel as a melee rogue, however.

I'm liking the two archers + two melee. When both archers have scattershot it makes for some interesting battles. A lot of the time my melee fighters don't even have time to get to the enemies before the archers have demolished them.
I tossed around the idea of making Leliana a melee rogue, and even wasted a talent point or two on that idea, but I ended up scrapping that plan. It probably could be done, but I decided to try out the two archer plan for some reason.

I think you'd better take one mage in your team. So you have 3 ranged attacker and 1 tank, that's enough for the team building.
I used this team many times, especially in the case the battle prefer ranged attack than melee attack, and I only keep 1 melee attack to get rid of the melee enemies, or I don't need them at all, but my squad always have at least 1 mage (doctor or nuker, that depends)

Not sure why I chose to go this particular route. I kind of enjoy the archery talents, and figuring out how to set the tactics for two archers has been good fun. There is a badge thingy that can be earned for having the main character learn all the archery talents, too.
Leaving aside the question of the team, making Hero an archer has certain benefits when it comes to importing that character into another campaign, Witch Hunt for instance. I believe there is another badge thingy for killing the Varterral on hard or nightmare. Still working on that one.
