Copying the information from this thread on how to report an issue concerning Mass Effect 1 (http://social.biowar...1/index/2012975)
1. It’s important to identify which product is experiencing the problem.
a. Is it the console version or the PC version? (Edit: Most of this is strictly applicable to the PC version.) (PC Version)
b. Media: physical disk or digital download (and which vendor) (Physical Disk via Amazon)
2. System Details
a. Processor (AMD Phenom(™) II X4 925 Processor/ Core count (2805 MHz?)/ Core Speed / Main RAM Amount (3.99 GB)
b. Display Adapter (NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250) / VRAM (1.00GB)/ Driver Version (just saying "latest drivers" doesn't help -- Edited: only ATI / nVIDIA cards are supported) (8.17.12.6724)
c. Sound Adapter (Speakers – Realtek High Definition Audio)/ Driver Version (6.0.1.6194)
d. Operating System (& service pack if applicable) (Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium)
e. Direct X Version (DirectX 10.0 Mar2009 or later)
3. Problem Details
a. When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really apply here, but the others do.
b. What? What is the nature of the problem that you’re seeing? (Mass Effect goes to “Not Responding” and eventually crashes.)
c. When? When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only after so many hours of play? (Only when I would actually complete a part of the story mode. Such as exit the tram to leave Noveria or escape with Dr. T’soni from the Prothean ruin)
d. Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does it occur everywhere? (So far only on those story missions – multiple side missions have been completed without error.)
e. Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?
1. On Noveria – I completed the fight against Matriarch Benezia. I freed the Rachni Queen and set off the Neutron Bomb to kill the rest of the children. With my journal stating my mission was complete, I went to leave via the Tram I came in on. I entered it. As the Tram screen fades into a loading screen after about 10-15 seconds the screen goes black completely and does not continue on with the game. I do not appear back on the Normandy with the cutscene of talking to the Council. After using Ctrl-Alt-Delete to pull up the Task Manager it always lists Mass Effect as Not Responding.
2. Loading a save before getting too immersed in the Noveria chain of events I left the planet to explore more of the game. I was able to navigate many planets and conduct surveys without error. Eventually I headed to the planet where Dr. T’soni is doing her research. I completed the quest there without error or trouble. However after the cutscene of escaping the mine with Liara T’soni it once again goes to a loading screen and after about 10 seconds stops responding with a solid black screen.
Given this second issue propping up from the same circumstances it seems
like the issue revolves around finishing a quest that furthers the overall story of the game. I've tried lowering my graphics to the lowest setting with no change, I've updated my NVIDIA driver with no change as well. I've not found any instance of a similar problem with google searching Mass Effect issues.
Mass Effect crashes immediately after completing a main story mission.

Firstly, driver 8.17.xxxx is not as valid driver number, you got that from the dxdiag report didnt you? Unfortunately, thats the version number of a directx component windows is using. The driver revision for nvidia cards should be something like 258.96. The newer the drivers, the lower the chance of them working properly with an old game like ME1 is.
Also, ME was released before Win7, so its hit and miss when it comes to your success in getting it to work. Sometimes it will work fine, other times there are errors.
Your problem sems to be the rendering of the screen in the comms/debreifing room for when the mission is over. This could be due to a corrupt file and requires a reinstall, or the drivers for your video card are unable to render the graphics, requiring a different driver to be loaded.
You havent specified which version of Windows you have (32 or 64 bit), so I cant recommend an exact driver release for you to try. I do know the ones released about June/July of last year are known to be fairly stable when it comes to ME and ME2, with the ones being released after that not being as reliable. Check nvidia archive for the releases.
