And its just a placeholder, relax. Hopefully the final boxart is better than this one, unlike ME2's which ended up being much worse.
Thank God for the Collector's Edition.

what do you mean by place holder boxart?
A temporary art for websites and magazines to use until the developers figure out the final design.

That leaked cover is bad, not epic, not catchy. ME2's cover was bad as well, and still is. Never grew to like it. The original concept art cover was better but not good.
Besides, why the hell does Shepard look like an Engineer on that cover? Pistol and omni-tool (with blade) is no no. It should be the default soldier shepard with AR.

Bioware made the GameInformer cover, as well as all the other similar covers for other magazines with ME3 cover stories.
I know, but that was good for magazine.
For cover box looks generic.
Clearly they wanted our first glimpse of the game to be based around this image if Reapers descending on Earth and obliterating it, with Shepard being front and centre because it is his story. If thats the image they want for the game it makes perfect sense to use it as the cover.
There's fan made one that looks far better.
Here.
That's perfect.
This one looks like usual shooter cover.
Don't get me wrong, I love shooters but this covers don't have much of imagination.
I really don't get the whole 'omg bioware is so lazy' attitude. They make some artwork and use it on more than one thing and now they're lazy? Why shouldn't they use it more than once. This artwork was more than likely done for the boxart first, then edited slightly for use as magazine covers.
I never said Bioware is lazy, but this box are is lazy made.
But this artwork was specifically made for GameInformer while other magazines got it's own artwork of Shepard too.
So just putting Phalanx and stupid looking Omni-tool blade on artwork already made for something else is just lazy.

Yes it is.

Same background, same badly made Sheploo face for some reason and same pose.
Only difference is that head is little lover and arm position holding Phalanx and Omni-tool blade.

Thats quite a good artwork. I'd prefer it if it showed maybe some Reapers descending in the distance, or made it a little more clear it was Earth, but it is really good. Looks a lot more restrained, which I like.
The artwork was used for several magazines, like the PS3 magazine and PC Gamer. I assumed it was designed as the game artwork first and then distrubuted round to the magazines as a marketing thing. All the magazines had different Shepard poses, but they all had the same backdrop of Earth and the Reapers.
The last part was directed more at the people that simply posted 'lazy' without bothering to offer up suggestions or why they thought that.

What would you like to see?
More characters?
Different background?
Different pose?

I think its pretty good. Could be better, but its good.
I'd much prefer the ME3 cover(Standard, Collector's, and Spectre/Commander Editions) to be similar to ME1's cover, with a lot of characters on the cover with a nice color scheme and such. I LOVE ME1's cover.
Oh, and Mesina- the link you posted of the one that looks "far better".
I highly disagree. I think that looks drab and uninspired. I'd much rather have the placeholder over that.

Lazy is an interesting observation, since it makes me think of a couch potato box art cover, but it doesn't really help.
OK.
What would you like to see?
Something like this.
More characters?
No need.
Different background?
Earth burning is great, but something like in picture I linked.
Different pose?
Same as above.

it's perfect because:
1. it's a good quality image with the recognisable hero.
2. good background earth/earth burning.
3. it's not too busy.
4. iconic pose & figure/armour/guns etc. that tells you a lot about the game before reading anything.
5. it's leagues better than the standard ME2 box-art with it's dodgy character depictions and weird poses.

And slightly different armour. The pose is actually different as well. Not huge differences, but differences nonetheless. It is also a pretty good background I think.

Same style, but it IS different. And in a good way. The placeholder art is better than the mag's cover in my opinion and would be acceptable for final release(even though I'd prefer a more ME1 styled approach to the cover).

Oh really?
A hero watching his homeplanet getting destroyed and has to retreat is drab and unispiring while this cover isn't?!

Don't get me wrong, I loved CoD 4 and Bad Company 2 and I'm looking forward for Battlefield 3.
But their cover arts are very cliche.

A sense of hopelessness. This is meant to be the battle for the galaxy against an unstoppable enemy and you have to fight back. Like in the picture That Mesina linked, Shepard is looking at the Earth in sadness because it has fallen to the Reapers, that kind of epic scale is what we need for the final act
More characters?
Not really bothered about the characters, Shepard would be fine on his/her own since this is the end of their story
Different background?
I think Earth burning is a great background, I just think it should convey more emotion, than "Shepard walks with a weapon with Earth in the background

All of them use the same general colors while the current placeholder for ME3 has the signature striking blue and orange we've all come to recognize from ME1 and 2.
It still carries the sci fi feel, has a nice rounded planet in the background(which adds a nice division across the cover) and in my opinion, is better than the link you posted AND the covers of Modern Warfare, BBC2, and B3.
EDIT- Forgot to mention specifically about the link. Hurr durr, I has mishaps.
Anywhoozle, the link you posted is.....well, drab. Its just the back of someone looking at a planet. Not really gonna draw many people in with that depressing background.
You need a striking cover with a badass standing there looking like he's ready to take down the biggest threat to galactic civilization. Not a cover with a dude looking out of a window at a planet that you can't even tell is being annihilated since only a piece of the planet is on the cover.
