I think the Omni-Blade fits in quite well. Perfectly, actually.

Its like having a CQC knife without an actual knife. Taking advantage of the Omni-Tool by turning it into a wrist mounted blade for thrusting and slashing sounds not only effective but completely sensible.

I agree with this. It doesn't show a sudden shift to melee combat and sword fights (which would be out of place), but its, as you say, like a future version of a combat knife. It seems like the sort of thing the infiltrator or Soldier will use for their unqiue melee takedown.

It's a horrible boxart, it's so incredibly generic, it isn't even funny anymore.

So a Shooter/RPG hybrid shouldn't have a hardcore badass on the cover looking like he's gonna kill you with a beautiful planetary backdrop because.....shooters and action adventures have covers with badasses on them?

I'm not getting it. Please reiterate.

I didn't say it shouldn't have but it is not a good idea.

I don't like it that shooters and action advantures use them all the time. Be creative developers!

But before that, let me clarify that Bioware shouldn't give a rat's gluteus maximus whether other games in their genre or other genres have done something to their covers.

Marketing.

Both Mass Effect games would sold much more if it was marketed better.

Point- Whatever they did to their covers WORKED.

True, but this one wouldn't work.

Bioware's been trying to grab the shooter market and this cover would certainly do well to grab them.

Maybe, but why use same style like many other games?
Why not stand out with diffrent cover?

As for RPG players, most already know about this series and have latched on to it. Still, they aren't forgotten, as RPG players put much stake in the story of the game, and since the story of the ME universe is in space, they put a beautiful background in the cover to draw RPGers in as well.

I don't get any sci-fi feel like ME1 cover.

ME2 failed with it's own cover( though game itself has even more sci-fi feel then ME1).

It accommodates all. Badass with a gun on the cover, signature omni-tool with a new blade, and a beautiful spacial background of Earth getting bombarded by the Reapers.

Just reading that back to myself makes me sure of the fact that the cover can bring in both new players and players who've stuck around since the beginning.

So frankly, I don't see the problem. Of course, everyone sees things differently, so opinions will differ and that I understand, but I'm trying to see it from other points of view and I'm just not able to grasp why exactly this cover is so terribad in people's minds.

I admit, it is just mine opinion. I never even try to hide that.

Whether its goor or bad is irrelevant anyway since its just a placeholder. I'd be surprised if this ended up being the final cover, but I wouldn't complain. Still, I want to see what the Commander/Spectre/Elite/whatever the hell they want to call it Edition is gonna look like since I'll be spending over 100 bucks on it.

OK.

It basically says "we have space marine that has guns, and look! He's angry! Raaar! he's willing to use them! What a badass spacemarine he is, a true comicbook superhero!". It also says "Look the rifle's unfolded in his back, that means we're willing to sacrifice concistency and credibility of this series to appeal to CoD kids. Also energy swords, cuz they're cool amirite?"

There really isn't much that promises a good story with characters or a good world saving atmosphere. It's just some bald angry dick that's gonna shoot something. Whooppedoo. Even that god-awful standard ME2 cover was better. Mass1 still has the best covers. Mass2 limited edition was pretty cool too, even though it doesn't say much to a new player.

Exactly. Makes me wonder what the other classes will have. It'd be a little lame(but sensible) if every class's heavy melee attack utilized the Omni-Blade in some way.

I can see an adept biotically empowering it, a Vanguard mini-charging through an enemy with it, and Infiltrator doing a stealth kill with it, a Sentinel doing.....something, and Engineer doing.....something else, etc etc.

Like the one with just the logo better. It's simple, and not filled with BS.

Pretty much.

It also says "Look the rifle's unfolded in his back, that means we're willing to sacrifice consistency and credibility of this series to appeal to CoD kids.

You lost me there.

Also energy swords, cuz they're cool amirite?"

Wouldn't that go for Halo kids?

Err.....okay. How would you make the cover better? That is, to bring in new customers while still satisfying old customers and WITHOUT catering to your own personal tastes. (No hostility here, just curious. Wanted to clarify that as I think I might come off as harsher than I mean)

I think the engineer use some sort of incineration thing to burn enemies up close, or something like that - it was from GameInformer I think. I'd like to see an adept literally rip an opponent aprt with biotics.

What about the placeholder is BS though? That doesn't even make sense. Its just a game cover. I'll admit I think the ME2 cover is HORRIBLE, but how can I attribute that to it being filled with BS?

I can't. So I'm curious as to what makes this ME3 placeholder BS.

Ha, an adept ripping someone in half like the initial Ogre destruction in the Mage opener of DA2 would be sweet, but I play a Vanguard so I gotta look out for my own class too.

Frist off, they're not even trying to hide the fact that it's the cover they've used for several magazines.

Second off, I think they should use something unique that hasn't been seen before for the cover.

So unless it's a WIP, I call BS.

1) Shepard, breaking the unofficial tradition of Mass Effect covers, stands alone. No squadmates, no Normandy, and no images of the reapers.

2) I also think the Omni-tool knife sticks out too much. In game I have no problems with it, but it seems it was thrown onto this cover to occupy empty space (pun intended) instead of adding meaningful significance to the image.

3) Space. For a game set in the galaxy, this deptiction of outer space looks horribly empty/bland. Even if it is accurate (need verification), wouldn't it be better to capture the 'essense' of space rather than a dull black? Where are the cosmic objects?

4) Typical space marine. Yes, Shepard IS a space marine, but does he really need to be so...generic about it? Where is the creativity?

All my opinions of course.

Who fired the guy that did the ME1 box art?

ME1 had an awesome, epic box art and ME2, and it looks like 3, have HORRIBLE looking 3D models in lame poses plastered on a backdrop.

Quickly thinking of it I would make the shepard look less like a ****** poser. Now he looks like he's a poshy model that someone threw a bunch of random guns and said "Look badass". Make him give an expression of professionalism, leadership and unyieldingness(?). Give him just one gun, a big gun, but just one. Throw an army or two in the background to show that this is a bloody war where the fate of multiple civilizations hang. The raining fire can stay, that's cool. Then some starry sky.

The original ME2 cover-art was changed mid-production (despite it being superior), so hopefully the same applies to ME3's.

This made me laugh, nice line.

It could definitely be improved, but I do appreciate the difficulty Bioware has between balancing expectations of old fans while wanting to maximise new ones.

I just think it looks uninspired. Far too much emphasis on the shooter/military aspects and not really much about the 'grandness of space' retro sci-fi feel, or even the unfathomable Reaper threat.

Generic machine baddies versus generic badass space marine.

I'd be pissed if the same applies to ME3. I don't want them switching out a superior cover art for an inferior one.

lol, I know what you meant.

What I don't get is why they scrapped several of the good box arts, and picked the really ugly and bland ones.

I mean, I'd rather have something like this than the ME2 cover. Or that ME3 cover, for that matter.

I don't even want Shepard on the box. The Normandy flying over a burning London could be pretty nice.

The cover in no way excites me, I don't like it either.
