Its been said alot but I think most people don't seem to be getting it. The standard edition isn't meant to appeal to the hardcore fans, rather attract new players.
I think simplicity is key in this. I hear alot of praise of the Mass Effect 1 cover so I found that and I gotta say, I don't like it. I mean to glance at it there is just so much info going on there.. Evil eyes, an Alien dude... some chick and an expressionless guy being fused with an orange light. All that with space ships happening all over. Oh and an army of robots, interestingly enough the robots seem to be following you as opposed to fighting you.
Thats all just a quick glance and its way too much. If I pay more attention and analyze it.. I can get a much better feeling for the game and what's happening on the cover but a cover meant to appeal to the masses shouldnt require analyzing. ME2 did a better job.. 3 characters front and centre and what looks to be a futuristic wasteland behind them, also orangeness...
This one is the simplest yet. Our main character, in a hero pose... behind him is earth being attacked by some sort of giant space ships. You look at that and you know what to expect... Clearly that guy is who we play, and we are going to want to stop those things from destroying earth... Look at Me1 and Me2's covers, what the hell is the game about? it says alot about the setting, too much even.. but nothing about what the game entails.
EDIT: My one suggestion would be to drop the omni tool. It looks badass and I like the idea of the blade/omni tool But I don't think it needs to be there.

So you don't like ME1's box art because it confuses you? Excuse me sir, but what does your IQ happen to be?

Hey man, ouch. WTF?
Plus the intelligence Quotient is a totally crappy way to measure ones intelligence, I believe we had a thread about this last night.
I know exactly whats happening on that cover... I've played through the game (more times then I like to admit) and when I bought it I knew then too... Because I had spent time lurking the forums and reading any new info that came out....
My point isn't "I don't know whats happening", my point is... people who didnt play from the beginning.. people who may not be all that into sci fi... maybe a call of duty player looking for something different, but not too different... Wouldnt know what the hell is happening.
I'm getting the special edition.... whatever it entails and I'm hoping for a very simple one like the ME2 collectors edition... Really I don't care whats on the cover... but I'm trying to look at it from a marketing position as opposed to an established fans position.
Also man, don't imply I'm stupid... nothing cool about that.

I guess I see your point. Keep it awesome keep it simple, that kind of thing. However in my opinion, ME2's cover left much to be desired. By the way, sorry for being a dick. I always turn into Grouchy McButthurt when I'm tired.

No problem man.
To be honest I'm not a huge fan of ME2s either... I think it's too orange and Miranda doesn't look like Miranda. It's also kind of squished.
Actually I think if not going for an ultra sleak/simple cover like the N7 collectors for ME2 then the ME3 collectors edition might be a good place for the busy classic Sci-fi homage (Like ME1) cover. Because its the collectors edition, its mostly marketed to the fans anyway... and if thats what they prefer then I think thats a perfect fit.
(my personal hope is for a simple one like ME2s collectors edition... but I'm not opposed to a more epic one)

Considering that discussing this on the Kinect thread appears to be off-topic, how about we do so here?
if we add a a little more contrast and make background bigger, it will do

that guy really knows how to make concept art...
too bad he didn't do anything ME related (or I missed it someow)
I would actually encourage Bioware to turn to the community artists for some box-art concepts, and maybe have a little contest... this would encourage the artists and would confirm the company's support for it's artists fanbase.

very nice... Shepard's face is also obscured, so every player can picture him in their own way,
I must admit theough, that I like better the idea of seeing Shepard from the back, while he's looking down on Earth or overseeing a major force gathering or a clash between Reaper and Alliance forces.
