Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition
Steam
DAOrigins v1.04

Intel® Core™ i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz
8 GB RAM, Corsair Vengeance

(ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series) ATI Radeon Sapphire HD 5770 1GB, driver 8.850.0.0
Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
DirectX 11 (Aug2009) or later

No third party mods installed.

The game crashes sporadically while casting Holy smite, always during the animation. This is regardless of location, target and caster (me or Alistair).
Furthermore, the game crashes even more consistently after running for a longer while and then casting Holy Smite.

I have tried turning off anti-aliasing, which seems to make no difference.

You haven't mentioned the forum archives versus this particular situation:

" About 1,220 results (0.36 seconds) "

That's what this search through Google came up with:

http://www.google.co...al.bioware.com

As I recall, I never used that spell just because it had that effect.  If there was a workaround among those 1200 pages, I personally don't recall reading about it.  There may not have been, but since the game is nearly two years old now, very little new is still being experienced, making the archives a very valuable resource.

(Two hours later, in Edit, a P. S.)  If the pertinence here isn't real clear to you, it's now summer, and readership here is way, WAY off from the wintertime traffic.  Your query could go all day and drop off the bottom withiut anyone seeing it that remembered anything helpful for you, so no other answer besides mine might be the situation for quite awhile.  The closer we get to the weekend, the worse the low readership number becomes, and there will not be a general improvement before next October.

esct,

For whatever reason, Holy Smite seems to prey on already existing system stability. That is to say, it seems to exacerbate already existing issues. There is no actual "fix" for this because the specific problem, as yet, seems undiagnosed.

Your hardware specs are solid... so the best you can do is maximize performance (re: stability) for the game. Some things that might help:

1) Check the size of your Windows page file immediately after a reboot. You can do this by going to the windows start menu and typing dxdiag. This will call up the DriectX Diagnostic. Pagefile is on the first tab, listed as "XXXXMB used, XXXXXMB available". This first number is what's important... the more programs and services which load in the background, the more your pagefile is going to swell. There are some old discussion threads about how to optimize your page file towards the bottom of the Solutions Roundup (which is pinned near the top of the forum).

2)Don't multitask other programs while playing the game. This includes keeping e-mail, browsers, music players, etc running while playing.

3) Take a break once in a while. As addictive as the game can be, you mentioned that the Holy Smite Crash is more likely when you've been playing for a while. You may want to get in the habit of saving/exiting and rebooting every once in a while. When you go to the bathroom, get a snack, etc.

4) Turning off the games AA is probably not going to help, but (I think... it's been a while) that others have said turning off "persistent gore" seems to offer a little more stability at times.

Good luck,

RI

I did make a search before posting. I am well aware that this is a known problem. In particular it seems that the spell Mana Clash is even more prone to causing a crash.

I made this thread in the hopes that it will help push the developers in the direction of solving this little problem we have.

It is a shame such a fine game should have to suffer from something like this when I can play games with 10+ years on their necks (I'm talking about Baldur's Gate 1 & 2) literally without any issues what so ever.

Thank you both for your responses, I'll try your tips to minimize the number of crashes. But I think we all know this game direly needs a good fixing.

Having this same problem, especially in the Circle Tower where the Templar enemies continuously use it. They get halfway into their animation, then crash. Though this happens only rarely, and most of the time it doesn't crash, it still happens. If I've had the game running for more than an hour or so or if I've had to load saves a lot, it seems to intensify the chances of crashing. This same thing happens with the Cleanse Area spell.
