Okay, you see this? This evil Cerberus Mook? That's a human soldier. You can't tell it by looking at the Mook, because he's got his face conveniently covered, but this is your own species right here, five fingers and everything. Good armor, by the way - makes you look like an evil incarnate, with those red eye slits. ;) Very robotic-like. Almost like an antropomorphic Reaper. Makes things easier, right?

But that's still a human, make no mistake. Maybe even indoctrinated, but not completely a husk, because "forced behavior modification always results in metal degradation," and we can't have the enemy troops too stupid, can we. Alive one, not completely lost.

You're going to be fighting humans throughout the entire game, while the Reapers are harvesting the Earth. Never forget this.

Since you metagamed the hell out of the topic, then why not mention that since ME3 is a game, there will be a plausible way to defeat the Reapers without the aid of terrorists anyway?  Oh, and one more thing. A whole organization doesn't need to be indoctrinated to switch sides. A Reaper artifact-exposed crazed leader is quite enough. Or maybe not even so. You ever played Arrival?

my main concern is the following quote:

'Mass Effect 3 plays like a shooter'

bye bye rpg elements :(

Mass Effect was always a shooter, just a crappy one. It's hilarious to me that people whine about Bioware improving a fundamental aspect of the game. Having the combat better does not mean that the RPG elements are gone and if you've been paying attention at all, you would know that they've been adding to RPG part of the game too.

All they're really doing is aping Gears of War gameplay. Though it may be improved, they're still years behind the curve.

1.  Bioware also claimed that ME2 had RPG elements,  it didn't.

No fan of ME2, but it did have RPG elements.  They were just toned down a lot while shooter aspects were played up.  It looks like more RPG elements are going into ME3 (modding is back, more armor customization, multiple evolutions of powers, paragon/renegade system amy be tweaked)

How this will work out, we'll have to see.  Maybe E3 will shed some light on it.

See, I'm not a complete pessimist! :innocent:

2.  Bioware made Dragon Age 2,  whose main feature was the Awesome Button.  Which wasn't.

To their credit, that team is actively looking into player feedback.  Of course, that's neither here nor there.

And I found DA2, while far from Bioware's best, doesn't deserve all of the hate it's getting.

3.  People seem to forget that Mass Effect originally was an RPG,  with Character Skill affecting the ability to shoot.  It wasn't "always" a shooter.  Just because you shot something doesn't make it a Shooter,  if the Character's ability governs your ability to hit in any way,  you're in at least "Mostly RPG" territory.

Meh, I'm more in line with "Just because you shoot something doesn't mean it has to have multiplayer";) As far as I'm concerned, how combat systems work doesn't majorly impact RPG mechanics.  More of a concern for me would be if combat was the main focus of the game, rather than complementing the storyline we're following and the choices we make.  In other words, is the path we follow a "role" that we "play", or a "campaign mode"?

There's no free pass for the third time.  If Bioware wants my $60,  they have to show me an RPG,  not tell me it's in there somewhere.  I'll settle for the TPS if there's more RPG in it.  What I've heard so far sounds good,  but Bioware's on my "I'm not preordering again,  reviews first" list now.  Twice now what they claimed,  and what they shipped,  were very different things.

Agreed.

in the IGN article it says TECH BLADE, ive seen the blades cerberus use from a review by OXM where they showed concept art showing a female operative with a katana style blade, not a omni blade, it was metal. and it comes from your wrist armour aswell, so i imagine it is similar to a hidden blade like assassins creed. and thank you bioware, i was asking for this ages ago and you have listened, i think it will look amazing and as far as im concerned.... im going all out rambo in the third game.

Grenades! Sadly they're not frisbee grenades though. I hope they look like Kasumi's flashbangs.

I was so glad to hear the grenades are back, I don't care what shape they are. Weeee!

And I'm sure the Krogan princess is "crazy hot" because she's sportin' a flame thrower. Can't wait to meet her... I bet she can kick some serious Cerberus hiney.

You have no idea what an rpg is for most people, end of story.  Or perhaps you can regail us with your defintion of an rpg.

2.  Bioware made Dragon Age 2,  whose main feature was the Awesome Button.  Which wasn't.

How the heck would you know anything about DA2  you didn't buy it.  Let me guess a friend let you play it.

Ah so now we know what makes an rpg and rpg 'character skill that affects shooting'.  Forget storyline, companions interupt decisions, nice or nasty play throughs.

So with all due respect,  the last time I trusted Bioware's word,  I got ME2 which didn't have any RPG in the box.  I would not have paid $60 for a mediocre TPS.  I gave them the benefit of the doubt,  and almost lost another $60 on Dragone Age 2,  being saved at the last minute by the demo.

Well then you are fool for even being on these forums right?  I swear these dumb arses that hate games or game companies and still hang out on the forums to inform the rest of the world what is what is nothing short of bizarre.

lol,no free pass?  You would be an idiot to spend your hard earned money on a title that right now you know you will not enjoy, but the thing is the chances are very very good that you will buy it no matter what.,  You like many ohter beefers have to buy these games 'to give bioware one more chance' so that you can have some legitimacy when you complain.

I was a bit apprehensive when I first read that there was going to be a big emphais on the shooting mechanics, because I thought it would take away from RPG elements, but all of this just sounds awesome.  Totally looking forward to it. :police:

Yes it was. A very bad one. Mass Effect was a perfect example of what happens when a game tries to be too many things at once. The inventory system was a mess and had no place in the type of game they were trying to create. It was simply added because Bioware makes RPGs and all RPGs must have an inventory, right?

The gameplay was also (by far) Bioware's worst. This is largely why Mass Effect 2's streamlining was accepted, unlike DA2's. Mass Effect's gameplay utterly failed, while Origin's did not.

Seconded. Although I vastly prefer ME2's gameplay, I don't out-and-out hate ME1's by any standard.

I can respect Da Mecca for his thoughts, he can respect mine for mine and we can all find a happy slice of Mass Effect to call our favorite.

Personally, my favorite Mass Effect game is World of Call of Halo of Gears of Assassin's Mass GTA 4 Dead Smackdown vs Effect 3.

They actually did have a female Krogan in ME2... granted the only way you could tell that she was a she was because she said that she was the head of the female camp... granted her voice was slightly higher pitched than the other Krogan's voices.

Gotta love the Mass Effect 2 haters, they always get into their little "It's not an RPG!" Whining mode, but do they ever have a real explanation? No. I've played Baldur's Gate, KOTR, and Witcher 2 and still Mass Effect tops them all, so I can honestly say I have no idea where they are coming from...
As for Dragon Age, Origins had a good enough story... But, normally I'm not one to care even remotely if the gameplay sucks, but the gameplay in Dragon Age was about as fun as slowly driving a nail through your eye and into your skull...And then you get resurrected and slowly chopped up into tiny bits while being dropped in slowly burning acid that tears through your skin...Afterwards you are revived and you yourself slowly chop off every one of your fingers and throw yourself feet first into a slow moving meat grinder...And finally a monkey throws its poo at your dead body for good measure. Needless to say, I did not even try Dragon Age 2 when I heard of its lacking storyline.
