IGN got their hands on Mass Effect 3 and have written up what they played and what you can expect more of next week at E3.

Quote: "The familiar elements that need to be there are intact - powers and talents are still in the same menu wheel structure, and weapon types remain unchanged. You're not going to select an assault rifle and be shocked by its looks. But you will be taken aback by how well it works. I was. And now the wait to play Mass Effect 3 until 2012 is that much harder. "

Read it all HERE

I thought the Krogan had clans. You know, those things Wrex was trying to unify in ME2. Now there is a king? Wrex=Denethor?

Also, soldiers get a tech blade. And adepts get...a biotic blade! :D I can't wait to see the bio-tech blade of vanguards and the tech-bio blade of sentinels.

"Moving and shooting, a previously suicidal maneuver that most players outgrew within a few hours of Mass Effect 2, isn't just an option now - it's a good choice."

I hope that means crouching will make a triumphant return.

Not so happy about the melee emphasis. If you got a gun and the enemy makes it to close quarter range, then you are doing something wrong.

Depends on your playstyle. All my sheps use a shotgun and most of the time I'm the one going at close quarter range. Shotgun blast + melee = effective and satisfying.

I'm very eager to see these new melee skills

I'm glad to hear that the combat system is more advanced and quick but it worries me as being an engineer for my main. From what I remember in ME2, especially on hardcore/insanity, I found myself using my powers more than my weapons and if the enemy got close enough it meant death to me. I hope Bioware has updated the power system so us squishies can keep up with this fast-paced shooter gameplay.

I've yet to see if Xtreme Kool melee finishers actually improve the game, or they are implemented because it is the TPS trend now.

Elbow of Death was sufficent well enough.

We'll see.

Agreed. I think it's pretty lame tbh.

Plays like a shooter huh.   So far the news coming out is centered around the combat and how it continues to go down that shooter route.  While important, im far more concerned in knowing that the game is still an RPG at heart and not some heavily weighted hybrid.   After all it still has that RPG label and so far we know little about what is happening with Shepard and her squad.

Well hopefully we will learn more about that after all the combat demos at E3.

I thought the elbow melee was lame. It's good that they're adding more variation this time.

Guess what. When they're in stabbing range, so are you. Pulling up a gun at that distance would just be awkward.

So reading this, looks like you can one shot melee kill enemies? How is this going to work exactly? It seems it could be a bit OP so I assume there must be some kind of limitation to how it will be implemented? Any opinions or insight on this?

Based on the preview, the one-shot melee hits have wind-up so if there's like 2-3 enemies at close range shooting you/attacking you you'll likely be dead if you try to one-shot each of them with a melee attack - which is how it should be.

Why would this need to be limited? I imagine running from enemy to enemy in order to 1 hit melee them will get you killed pretty quickly, that's pretty much limits enough in my opinion..

I guess I'll have to wait and see but an instant kill melee attack seems to diminish shotguns. Unless shotguns have been modified to work better at longer range or some other modification. I suppose it is all just speculation at this point.

Outside of that it sounds pretty positive.

I expect 'princess' is a practical abbreviation of 'daughter of an important clan chief.'
