Changed Combat in Mass Effect 3? I'm a bit worried.

I kind of liked Mass Effect 1's combat, but I felt kind of "squishy", you know?  The soldier felt like the best class, by far.  Ironically, Wrex ended up dying more often than most characters.

In Mass Effect 2, the one thing that I thought was absolutely perfect about it was the combat.  Perfect.  One of my characters was a soldier in Mass Effect 1, but in ME 2, I switched him to a vanguard, because the ME 2 vanguard is my favorite class.  It's so much fun to play.  The submachine guns, biotic powers, the new Charge...  I'm the type who likes to grab a fully automatic weapon and charge into battle like a krogan.  Sheer bravery, mixed with a little bit of crazy.  Don't worry, though.  I mixed it up a little.  I've still got a couple of soldiers (one is a blond renegade named Duke, for laughs), a vanguard, an adept, and an infiltrator.

Anyway, the story and available squad members give me high hopes for ME 3.  I've just been let down by sequels in the past, when they changed things too much.

After reading the IGN thing convinced me they've made all the right decisions with combat.

I think we have different definitions of bravery. I didn't like the combat system in ME1 mainly because it was too easy. An adept NG with Assault Rifle bonus power was unstoppable for me. Spamming abilities and gunning cybernetic baddies to the ground was awesome, but shallow. To fix it in ME2 there was global cool down, but I also had heavy armor. I could take the same hits a soldier could take and insanity was much easier for me in ME2.

So far, I like the change of combat. Multiple fighting levels, elevation, and AI that close the gap and not allow me to pick them off from cover. Also the CQC sounds cool, I got tired of brushing husks with an assault rifle. Now I get to annihilate them with "Psionic" blades, btw I think the tester messed up on the words, but now I can pretend I am a ghost for the Terran Dominion! :)

Only on sound design. The guys at DICE don't even make third person shooters. Why would BW take gameplay advice from a developer that almost exclusively makes first person shooters?

There is always at least one person on this site who will be worried about any news that is released.

ME2's combat was far from perfect, imo. It felt rather clunky and unresponsive, sounds like they're improving in all the right areas for ME3. (Except maybe for those melee weapons, but that's probably just me)

I wouldn't say that ME2's combat was perfect. Pretty bloody good, for sure, but there were noticable flaws. All of which seem to be fixed for ME3.

All classes can wield all weapons, and they're making it so I'm forced to move instead of just sitting in the same corner during the whole fight. I'm happy.

At least they're bringing back grenades... the omnitool melee weapons I could go either way on, though. How do they even function as part of the lore? Are they basically like a beam of supercharged particles that are focused into a specified shape that resembles a holographic projection?

WTF?

I'm with you on this.  Okay I kind of wish heavy weapons were a soldier exclusive, but I wasn't expecting that change.

"Forced to move"? Hardly; they're just making it easier to adopt a playstyle that you prefer. In other words, you can still sit in a corner and play more of a directive role if you want, or you can get up out of cover and move around the battlefield more easily. Instead of just the Vanguard having the high-risk, high-reward CQC bias, now all classes will have a higher reward for getting in close with your enemy.

The point is to give the player more freedom; I like this concept, even though it essentially means that each class's playstyle will be less unique.

Yeah, but at least soldiers still get that "weapon-specialist" feel by being able to hold more weapons than the rest.

Also, I'm definately happy that I'll be able to use a Shotgun/AR on my Sentinel if I please, and swap 'em depending on the missions etc.
Overall, I really like what I'm hearing in terms of combat gameplay, but that was of course never the real reason to play ME. So as long as they deliver in the other areas I can take a few "combat-mistakes" if you know what I mean.

Edit: On a different note, I really hope they put more effort into squad commands and AI. I always felt like the squad in ME2 were mostly just usefull for their powers, as they kept getting themselves into silly situations which got 'em killed.
So more often than not, I'd just keep 'em way back while I did the killing and used their powers. I hope they're a bit more capable in ME3 so I can use them for more than their powers.

Oh, and sorry if this is getting too off-topic, wasn't the intention.

They said they were building, not rebuilding this time around. I think the core of ME2's combat is amazing, and if they add better movement, weapons, combos etc, it will be that much better.

Yes, I am very worried that they are improving the combat system for Mass Effect 3. Really?

Exactly. I'm not worried one bit.

I'm more impatient at this rate. ^_^

From what I read, the combat is going to be very different than both previous games. I'll do what I do best: PLAY. ADAPT. ENJOY.

I must say the soldier class gets boring real fast, with the adept class you can get some ****s and giggles.

I wouldn't take too much from that recent IGN writeup. The writer was clearly speaking to an audience of people who are kind of bad at games, and also only play through once so they don't get better. You can tell by him saying Vanguard charge was bad, you're stuck in cover the whole game, etc...stuff that people who got better at the game soon learned is completely untrue.

Article sounded good.

And ME2's enemy AI sucked. Like when I'm more afraid of enemies with Avengers than with Vindictors because the ones with Vindictors never do a followup shot. Similarely Krogan Slowely walking forward firing shotguns at you at long range...Uhg.

And close in aiming was awkward. And There were issues using alot of powers that failed when you didn't get target lock.

And there was the issue of biotics being neutered....
