If you didn't like FO:NV, you probably haven't played the first two Fallout games.  If you haven't played the first two Fallout games, you don't know anything about Fallout.

I love Obsidian, but Bioware doesn't need to outsource this franchise, they need to regroup and decide whether or not they want to continue to develop RPGs.  If they think it can't be profitable, or the producers don't enjoy the genre, they should just let the DA franchise die peacefully.

All other factors being the same I'd rather BioWare made all the further DA games. A lot of people were disappointed by DA2, but I do not believe other studios could've done any better with the same resources and time constraints.

DA2 wan't bad because of time nor resources constrains, it was bad because they decided to reinvent everything about DA. 2 years is enough time to make a *sequel*, just not enough time to make a reinvention.

NWN 1 better then NWN 2 ? NEVER!!! NWN 1 had pathetic story, and utterly blant characters. The initial campaign was 10 times worse then what Dragon Age 2 had, even with re-used areas (4mysterious creatures = 4 districts!). I never played the first expansion Shadows of Undertide, but Hordes of Underdark was finally a good one - however it was`t made by Bioware, if i am not mistaken.

NWN was one of the best games ever made due to multiplayer, DM and the toolset.
And BioWare did make Hordes, though of course because it was BioWare you assume it was not.

Compare to that NWN 2 was miles away better, with richer storyline, better characters and companions. Again it had bugs (Starling infinite Xp, some stucking and crashes). However even with all that it was still better then first NWN - the NWN 1 was just all about editor, campaign was made only as "look what you can make".

NWN2 was quite good, lots of fun but with one of the worst endings ever in any game.

And the Mask of the Betrayer is by far one of the best RPGs of past 5-10 years, it has best storyline of all the rpgs from Planescape: Torment, only now Witcher 2 is beating it - but still i would be glad if the same people that did Mask of the Betrayer would work on Dragon Age 3, that would guarantee perfect and completely unique story. And also i don`t remember any obviously glaring bugs from MotB, so even Obsidian got the get better eventually. Not sure how its with their New Vegas, as i have`t played that one yet.

MOTB was quite good, nice game except for the monumentally stupid implementation of the Spirit Meter which almost ruined the game totally.

I think it started out as tweaking and then they went overboard and then they swam back under the ship climbed up the side and went overboard once more and then gone a bit bat**** insane for good measure. However I don't belive their intent was to reinvent the frnachise. It just sort of came out totally wrong.

Also note that I said all others being constant. Obsidian couldn't have reinvented it either.

It's a no-brainer really.

Obsidian has a long history of inclining Bioware franchises, or polishing rough diamonds if you will:

Baldur's Gate -> Baldur's Gate 2
KOTOR -> KOTOR 2
NWN -> NWN2 (esp Mask of The Betrayer)
Mass Effect - > Alpha Protocol (sorta)

While I liked elements of Alpha Protocol, it's a testament to poor game design and horrible execution. Your inclusion of it suggests to me that the opening post is a joke. Given that the length of this thread and the seriousness of the discussion, I'd say you made some excellent flame bait.

Alpha Protocol was an awesome and fun game. More fun than DA2 and better executed certainly. Alpha Protocols problem was that SEGA dropped the ball and decided to kill support funding to Obsidian for the IP due to harsh and biased reviews. And again, there were articles were Obsidian devs were interviewed and spoke in detail about the extreme crunch time when SEGA decided to cut nearly 6 months of development time and nearly a quarter of promised funding, and force Obsidian into rushing and cutting corners.

And for that I effing congratulate Obsidian on a job well effin done for doing a damn fine job under harsh circumstances. In fact that seems to be the trend for Obsidian. Get promised time and funding, have said time and funding cut into by bossy/nosey/impatient publishers, put out the best they can with a rushed product... and still have fans who enjoy the games they put out despite the flaws of said games.

Here's the harsh reality.
F:NV > DA2
Alpha Protocol > DA2

Which means to me...

Obsidian > BioWare

I loved AP, but it took getting over its issues and really giving it a chance for sure... its odd though, Obsidian always seem to get screwed on their titles.. wasn't Kotor 2 also rushed out and half finished due to similar circumstances? Anywho, imo Obsidian has superior writers, but they need a more solid art department and yeah, a fair amount of time to actually release a polished product :P

While i enjoyed New Vegas more than FO3 and Alpha P.is a blast with blasting bugs, having just played dungeon Siege 3's demo on 360 makes me to think about Obsidian.
They really screwed this time if demo is alike to real game...
And if it is another good game series just got a downfall.

Sometimes I don't understand you people at all.

I have to ask: Have you played Fallout/Fallout 2? Because, IMO, it takes a blind man to not see that New Vegas is much more a succesor to those games than Fallout 3 was. Now, that is hardly surprising, since it was Obsidian who developed the two first installments, even if it was when they were still a division of interplay, and called Black Isle.

I did like FO3. More than I expected after the horror that was Oblivion, but it lacked the the consequences of your actions and the exploration of morality that the first two games had. Not to mention the wicked black humour. Also, it was a typical "at level 30 my character is a super-duper-totally-all-powerful-ninja-mutant-utterly-bloody-boring-killing-machine"!

That is where NV delievers, initial bugs or not. I picked up my copy of NV in january, and experienced no serious bugs.

So yes. Even though I doubt it will happen, I'd love to see Obsidian do DA3. But, and that I am pretty certain will never happen: Only if EA stays away from the development completely!

In a majority opinon I do believe F:NV is considered a great game. Like I said, a competition would be awesome. But I get the feeling this thread was made just to hurt BioWare's feelings.

Butchered, are you serious!? They developed Fallout, so how the heck can they butcher their own creation. If anything, they saved Fallout because it had such a stupid story under Bethesda. Seriously, Bethesda's storylines are like an emo with a black and white crayon drew on vomit. They butchered the Brotherhood into the life of a stereotypical hero with guns like something out of Oblivion. Bethesda did not create the Fallout world; I suggest you play the originals. Chris Avellone was the genius that revitalized the series with some funnier input (I thought Tim Caine's vision was too serious in Fallout: 1).

Anyways, Obsidian really needs to find a publisher that won't force their games out the door after 2 years. If you look at the time they take to make games, they are actually the best developers I have ever seen. In less/equal time it took to throw up Dragon Age: 2, Obsidian releases games that rival the original, or are overall better than the original in the case of New Vegas. They have so much potential, but publishers just don't give them the resources they need. Even though New Vegas was a bigger success than 3, they don't seem to be getting any of the money it seems like Zenimax is keeping it all for themselves.

Everyone is stating their opinions as facts on this thread. I liked FO3's style because I like TES's style. And since FONV wasn't like that, I didn't like it as much. It's still a good game, just not my cup of tea.

I think they should either get the series back to its roots or give the series to Obsidian. I think a premature death shouldn't be in the works if the series has more to offer. I mean it is a story ripped straight off of Tolkien, but I liked the setting and characters. Obsidian can really give Dragon Age a darker touch with the same quality of voice actors we've seen from Teyrn Loghain and Morrigan.

I just love talking to Caesar because his voice acting is one of the greatest I've ever seen. He reminds me of James Woods' voice acting in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths he did fantastic as Owl Man. Maybe BioWare should use him in the next Dragon Age :D.

In which case you're talking about a preference in game style not bad game design.  If you think that changing the style of a series like that is bad then you'd have to agree that FO3 is even worse since it drastically altered the style of the game from the previous Fallout games alot more than NV did.

So that's where Bioware's reputation ends? DA2? I thought you would include the other games in their list. And yes, that even includes Baldur's gate.

But I've yet to see them release a game that wasn't rushed by some idiot publisher or unfunded... poor Obsidian :-(

Bioware did BGII not obsidian.

Obsidian is run primarily by former Black Isle staff. Black Isle worked on the Baldurs Gate series with Bioware.

Here's my take on how this should work:

1. Bioware creates the basic plot.
2. Bioware and Obsidian work hand in hand developing a more nuanced plot and character creation. Chris Avellone is made co-lead writer. Avellone also writes at least one romance.
3. Obsidian develops the core of the game. (Using the REDengine.)
4. Bioware hammers out the edges and adds polish.

I'd like to see how that turns out.

Is this a serious thread? I'm kind of amazed it's been going so long, and without breaking out into war ..

Anyway, as much as I love Obsidian's titles, their games always seem to have plenty problems of their own. Bugs, mostly, but also gameplay mechanics not being executed as well as story/characters. Obsidian's reach always seems to exceed it's grasp - though actually I see that as more a compliment than a criticism.

That said, I'd love to see a proper collaboration between Bio and Obs - not just a simple handing over of the next installment of the franchise, but a real joint effort. The story, characters, quests, writing, party interaction etc could really be something. Of course, it could also be so unbelieveably buggy no-one's actually able to play the damn thing ...

I'm personally more inclined towards Obsidian as a company, mainly because they tend to take tread the narrow path when it comes to stuff like writing, their stuff often being miss or hit. Don't get me wrong, BioWare writes consistently good, but it's without any risks and cookie-cutter, so to put it. Obsidian's writing will surprise you by either being phenomenally good or abysmally bad, but it will some sort of reaction from you.

Every Obsidian game is either shat on or rushed by the publishers. The poor devs :crying:

You know what WOULD be cool? If Obsidian and Bioware join together. Leaving EA and all that bull**** behind.

Yeah, I agree with you 100%. That is exactly what Obsidian kept from Black Isle. BioWare always seemed to take the safe side of an RPG like Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age. Not until KoTOR it seems that BioWare got away from the swords and magic deal. With Black Isle, game after game the scenes and atmospheres were so different. Fallout and Planescape: Torment were almost polar opposites. Obsidian is keeping up with that legacy, though, from Alpha Protocol to Dungeon Siege 3.
