Sea of Dragons, SoD is a Forgotten Realms pw that takes place in 1354 DR. in the region known as the Moonsea useing the 3.5 edition ruleset.

Introduction:

"The Moonsea, also known as the Sea of Dragons, lies nestled between Thar to the north and the Dalelands and Sembia to the south. These natural barriers prevent casual contact between the two opposing regions. The Moonsea is a cold, clear, deep lake the color of dark amethyst, with frequent storms and turbulent weather that mirrors its turbulent past and present. It is a place where unwary adventurers can either make a name for themselves or be buried under the dark, hungry waves. The Moonsea's shores harbor a list of cities whose fame (or notoriety) is well known throughout the Realms: Zhentil Keep, Hillsfar, Phlan, Melvaunt, and Mulmaster. Each city along the Moonsea's shores brings with it its own unique contributions, helping to shape the overall character of the area. If that is truly the case, then the cities have little good to offer.
Since the Moonsea is a harsh place, the people themselves have become harsh in order to survive. Suspicion, greed, brutality, and political treachery have become the meat and drink of the region's inhabitants. But for every one city that still exists on the Moonsea's coast there are three that were not so fortunate. The Moonsea is dotted with the ruins of cities and the tombs of the unfortunate men and women who built them and sought to dwell in them.
In addition to the dead cities, there are the ruined castles and towers of petty would-be rulers and mages who sought solitude in order to better work on their spells of power and conquest. If things are thus, then why go to the Moonsea at all? The answer is simple: It is where legends and reputations are created and undone. If one wishes to make a name for oneself, one must take chances and face hardships. The Moonsea has risks and hardships to spare."

“Traveling from the Dalelands to the Moonsea is a bit like walking from a temperate, lush forest into a raging snowstorm: It's unexpected, uncomfortable, and if you aren't prepared for it, it could kill you."

—Elminster of Shadowdale

SoD is a heavy RP server that caters to the PnP feel of tabletop. We have made alot of improvements to nwn2 to bring the tabletop flavor to our PW. We offer lots of quests with more constantly in the works, and these are not your fed-x tailored quests. The world is immersive and upon stepping foot unto the server and talking to any of our dynamic npc's you will feel thrusted into the setting. The NPC's are very dynamic and may or may not like you, they treat you different based on your race and even sex, you will gain a whole new experience rolling a new character and just talking to the NPC's.
We feature actual dungeons and puzzles. We have a very unique spawner system, no more walking around and a monster spawns on top of you, the monsters have there own seperate factions so its likely to walk by and see a boar and a goblin fighting eachother or a bandit and an ogre trading blows till the death. Random encounters are just one of many things we pride ourselves over, there are so many that this would become a book if I noted them all. We have a custom built apperance changer that allows you to change your gear if the one you purchased from the store does not suit your rping needs. We have a dynamic loot system as well and loot randomly appears in different locations, thus preventing loot farmers and ninja's, party members each can loot the same chest for different spoils, so grouping isn't discouraged cause one person is a loot hog, everyone gets a turn. Exploration is fun on SoD, looking to every crack and cranny pays off, finding hard to reach places. Lastly we offer the most stunning areas that are very attention detailed, this doesn't waver as you explore but expands drawing you to want to see more.

We have a good staff at SoD, Dev's that listen to the players and are very helpful. A DM staff that is very friendly and runs events and player development plots. We also have a very dedicated playerbase of fun, mature and helpful, always willing to help new players. Don't know how to RP? You can learn and not judged by others but encouraged to have fun with it. We cater to just simply having fun and capturing that PnP feel we all loved so much.

Visit us at our forums for more information at http://seaofdragons.com/ Looking forward to seeing you!

So I popped in to give SoD a shot. It looks nice but there are a couple of things that could use improvement if you feel so inclined.

1. I spent a sizeable chunk of time at the beginning just going to shops to buy things. Some of the shops had map pins, other's did not. But there are a lot of shops that you need to visit to properly equip yourself. And therefore, it takes quite a while to jump into things. Perhaps a starter area with a starter outfitter (leave the stores for players selling and buying goods) would be good.
2. I don't know what I did wrong but my torch would not light (I went down the well).
3. Perhaps you could add pin markers for quests. The mayor who gave me the "well" quest could have shown me where the well was on the map.

Other than that, it has a nice feel. I'll check it out some more soon.

Hello Banshe and thanks for stopping by. The torch is a known bug, simply drop it on the ground and pick it up, it does that when you transition with it equiped.

About Shops and pin note map markers: We are a heavy RP server and cater to making a PW as close to PnP tabletop D&D as humanly possible. Map markers for everything on the map is a sense of meta gaming and we intentionally left markers out except for very important locations, In place we have NPC's that give directions within towns and cities to add RP immersion and a sense of exploration rather then everyone logging in and doing a Bee run towards location Z cause its on the map, this diffuses the element of exploration and causes players to not take there time looking around each area, which is one of our big pushes since we have so many things hidden that requires searching.

Quests work the same way and we stand apart from modern day MMO's of these past years by going back to D&D and oldschool rpg format of not leading folks on trails of cookie crumbs from quest to quest, rather our quests are more involved and many require thinking and paying attention to what the npc's say, though each quest does become posted in your journal till completion as a reminder.

Lastly about shops. Elmwood, the starting town; has items sold in there respected stores. Wooden made items are purchased at the Carpenters shop, metal weapons and armor at the blacksmith, healing potions and trinkets sold in the temple etc... This makes sense to do this because back in the middle ages shops functioned like that, each trade had there own shop according to that trade. Also we did this because we used FR source manuals to do the layouts of our towns and cities Posted Image

Looking forward to seeing you again. Sorry I missed you when you were on. Posted Image

I think that if there's anyone yearning for a RP server that strives for a D&D-like experience, then this is the server to play.

I've been a player of the server for a good while, and it really is breathe of relief to have met the staff there. I've been on many FR servers where it feels more obligatory to RP than encouraged, and I think this server does well in producing an environment that encourages RP. The SoD DEVs want to build a server that is authentic to the Forgotten Realms setting, and I think they so far manage to do that quite well with lots of details in areas and NPCs who reflect about the situation of the lands and offer helpful tips to players.

SoD is of course designed for lvls 2-15 (though you can descend further than that, but with difficulty) and is quite low-magic atm. I personally like this focus a lot, as the high lvls can become quite tedious, and it reflects more the nature of FR and D&D that high lvls are not easily achievable.

I think adventuring and exploring is also a lot of fun. SoD seems to just have very natural landscapes and even wildlife. NPCs in SoD notably work quite differently, there's lots of non-hostile animals that roam the forests and lands. NPC hostiles also work quite cool here, as they spawn often in larger numbers and patrol around areas like groups. Monsters aren't that predictable, and when you're roaming into the far into the wilderness, you can never be 100 % sure what you'll be facing. Sometimes when you go into the forests, you might quite unexpectingly find a bugbear patrol that's marching somewhere... and if you're a rogue, you therefore get a perfect opportunity to lay an ambush on em. : D

I think new players would have a lot to look forward on SoD, as there are many places and sights to explore, from ancient ruins and dungeons to Cormanthyr forestlands, and urban adventures in Mulmaster, and more. There's just so much explore, and even I, who've played there for 2 years have recently stumbled into some new things I've never seen. :P

If ya see me playing on the server, don't be afraid to ask for info (deserknwn2 is my acc name). I hope to see more players. :)

I'm not an online player, but I may try a PW one of these days for a change. This one looks good, but could someone explain a bit more about how leveling works? It's 1-30, but with emphasis on levels 15 and lower. Does this mean that XP is given in low amounts afterwards, making leveling slower, or what exactly? If I plan a character for this PW, should I plan it as a level 15 one?

Hello Arkalezth, We have what we call a soft cap. Currently you can level up to level 10 at the moment and then the xp trickles to being pretty low from killing monsters. Our next move on the soft cap will be to level 15 as we are currently working on the next level range of content for the server. We have done this to make becoming epic level (level 20-30) actually EPIC. In PnP you are basically facing godhood at those levels and we wish for our players to feel the reward of achieving epic level rather then hit level 30 in one month of mind numbing grinding. Going to Epic level after level 15 will be determined upon yourself and your PC.

As xp will be very low after level 15, you will only gain decent xp from quests, rping, DM events and DM campaigns etc... This does not mean at all that you have to devout alot of time into the server, we understand as adults that we each have a life besides playing video games and you can find that SoD doesn't push you to level fast just to keep up with players that are on all the time. SoD is set to a relaxed pace to allow you to spend time rping and not worry about hitting level 30 before the end of the week. If you make a PC on SoD I would suggest to develop for level 10-15 as your main focus. Level 30 will be achievable but not within weeks or months but a year if not longer.

We spent alot of time on our areas to cater to the level 5-10 range and very soon the level 11-15 range then later content beyond that. At low level you can explore ALOT of the region and have ALOT of freedom to choose where to adventure to as the content doesn't pin you down to one area till you level just to advance to the next area instead you are truly free to travel great distances. Going into a dungeon, cave or ruins will make you think twice about it before venturing within. Same with traveling the roads, it is generally safe to travel the roads but at any point you venture off the road something dangerous may be lurking. Danger is everywhere, even within cities you are not safe from mugger's, evil organizations, guards, wizard cabals etc...

Stop in and check us out. Posted Image

Thanks for the explanation, it sounds good, I usually prefer non-epic play. As I said, I've been focused on single player modules until now, but I'll take a look when I can, I'm curious to see how it works.

Poked around the starter areas and spent the better part of a nice evening with one of the denizens.

However the module currently isn't very playable for users of international versions of the game, as some custom work they did on the skills apparently messes them up on non-english clients.

Hello Ykhare. We are looking into why non english version's jumble up the skills. Keep in touch with us as we look into the cause and fix it. Last time we had this issue it was resolved when the player had English installed as the language of there foreign copy and it fixed the issue. This is only the second time we have had this issue pop up on us. Hold faith as we look more deeply into the matter.

I don't know if this is related, but I have a non-English version. I just rolled a Wizard and everything was fine at character creation, but when I leveled up, skills like Spellcraft and Concentration weren't class skills and I couldn't increase them.

I'd like to know if this is normal and intended (I'd be surprised if so). If it is, I'll continue playing, but if it isn't, I'll probably have to wait until it's solved, unless another solution exists.

Looks like I solved it. I put an English dialog.tlk file in my Documents/NWN2 folder (see here how to get one) and I have access to Wiz skills now. Try if it works for you too, Ykhare (text will be in English, of course).

Thanks I'll DL that and try a new character to see if the skills work now ^^

There still may be something worth looking into in the SoD files though, as I've definitely played on another primarily english module with its custom skillset very recently to check, and it worked fine without modifying my game.

Yup, using an english dialog.tlk sent the bug hiding into the woodwork and I was able to level the new version of my PC correctly.

I've been trying this PW, and I'm liking it, but unfortunately, my time zone (GMT +1) doesn't seem the best. There was only one other player connected this afternoon, and the other day I played an event, but it was late and I won't be able to do the same many times. So I'm not sure if I'll stick too much around here.

Well it was nice to have you Arkalezth, I made a similiar post on our forums to your same post made here and i'll speak again on that here. PW's are very hard to get off the ground for a few reason's 1) Not a very good execution of a game world. 2) Too many bug's that make it either unplayable or game breaking. 3) No player's on. SoD only falls in #3 no player's on, this being we are a new PW that is still currently in beta phase. We have ton's to offer but folks want to log on a online game to play with other's. This says nothing of how great a PW SoD is just that we didn't go online with a strong start up of Staff that all logged in at once all day long till folks trickled in, we have a staff mainly made up of 3 developer's with help from other's part time within the community. So even when we went open beta only 3-4 of us could show our online presence. Needless to say when folks look on Gamespy for a server to play on they naturally go to the one's with the big populations. Or give a low volume one a try and see no one is on and move to the big population server's, scraping quality for player quanity. To each there own.
We have massive plans for SoD and I hope that players can see the light at the end of the tunnel and stick it out till other folk's start to trinkle in which has been going on as of late, population has been picking up quite steady this week and still continues to grow. I log every afternoon (2-8pm est.) and there are always atleast 5-10 players this past week.

I saw your post in SoD forums. Good to know it's growing, from what I've seen, I recommend this PW to anyone. I'll be around for some time at least (as I said, I'm new to online play and I'd like to experiment some more), I hope to see more players soon.

I would like to give a sneak peek into SOD in the very near future. We will be adding quite a bit of Kaedrin's PRC pack which will add new choices to PC development, we are also adding in new PnP skills that are not currently used in nwn2 like Jump, Climb, Swim, and Disquise, just to name but a few. Also in the works and soon to be released is the massive crafting system not seen yet in nwn2, it is very similiar to the UO (Ultima Online) crafting system but is being finely tweaked to fit D&D and the Forgotten Realm setting but offers the very massive diversity UO's crafting system offer's. Crafting and trade skills will include: Mining, foraging, skining, lumberjacking, prospecting (gem mining) and herbalism. These are just the gathering aspect of our very in dept crafting system. It will be broken down into 3 parts; Gathering, refining and crafting giving players a WIDE variety of things to craft. This system is still in working stage but we are moving very fast in completing it. So far as this moment we offer 80+ very attention detailed areas (and still a long ways to go :) ) and many unique scripts throughout the server that makes you think your playing tabletop D&D rather then a grind fest or cookie crumb trail of what to do. SoD fights the battle to bring you a true D&D pnp type of onine game. Come check us out while our player population is exploding and get in on the DM events that are constantly unfolding!

I would like to give SOD a try, but I can't log in to the forums. When I try to register, it tells me that my email address is already in use. I must have created an account in the past but I can't remember my username, and there is no reset option for people who can't remember their username. If you knew my email, could you just delete the account so I can start a new one?

What would be the best time/day to log on? I've looked many times in the last week and according to gamespy there are always zero players logged on. Am I in the wrong time zone for this server's player base? (eastern US prime time)
