I'm having an extremely difficult time with this one. I start by calling out my mages (12 of them) and use mostly ranged attacks against the archdemon. But once he is down to half health, it all goes downhill. He camps at one particular spot where you pretty muchy need to use the ballistas (but I have nobody that can fix them when they jam). And too many darkspawn to deal with. But the real problem is the area effect magic the archdemon starts using. There is no way to get away from it.

There's a limit to the darkspawn that appear. Just kill them for the time being, and eventually the archdemon will come back over to your side where you can resume the fight without the use of the ballistas.

As for their magic attacks; they're all spirit based. If you can boost your magic or spirit resistances, that would help. Spirit balms or the Corruption helmet help here, as well as normal magic resist items like dweomer runes, The Spellward, templar armor, etc.

If you get too stuck, try this fight as an arcane warrior. With all of their resistances, this battle becomes pretty easy.

Some tips that may or not be useful in addition to what had been said:

Ballistas stage:
I found that ignoring darkspawn (letting npcs like Arl Eamon, etc) to deal with them and parking your party near the chasm across which the Archdemon is helps. Just kill off any darkspawn that pursued you, disable companion tactics so that they don't chase off additional ones who are fighting npcs, give them ranged weapons and focus fire on archdemon. You won't need to use the ballistas at all.

General armies use:
I've also found it to be more effective to use Dalish arches instead of mages, simply because they are more numerous, and don't tend to kill themselves off with their own aoe :P. If you went the werewolf path, I'd say that any other army is still better choice than mages, simply because their numbers create a better fodder/distraction for the darkspawn while you and your companions range the archdemon.

Problem is, it takes long enough for 3 of my characters and 12 mages to bring him to the halfway point. But 2 mages and one warrior w/ bow firing away at it takes forever. I can't keep up with the healing. And most of my archer group suffered casualties. My 12 mages are the only group I haven't used yet.

My group consists of:

Myself (Arcane Warrior)
Alistair
Shale
Wynne

I usually focus fire on the Archdemon and do my best to forget everything else. Occasionally, if surrounded by enemies (shrieks being the worst), I use a war cry or holy smite to drive them back.

I also like to keep control of the entire team so that they don't dash off somewhere and get killed or waste their efforts killing genlock grunts.

I've never used Shale in the final battle, but maybe the rock barrage might be useful. Not sure.

Only a rogue can fix a ballista when it jams, so yeah, you're missing a trick there. But I believe it is random if/when it jams, so keep firing away with the ballistas and eventually you'll get a fight where it won't jam for as long as you need it.

Also, don't forget you can dismiss your ally army and select another, so if too many of your mages die, dismiss them and select your next most numerous army.

Wynne and Shale have ranged attacks, and if you pumped Alistair's dexterity, he should be good with a bow, but even so I think he's best as a bodyguard to keep the darkspawn away from the others. Generally keeping your distance and attacking from range is a good idea with the Archdemon - even on the first and last bit where melee is an option.

Finally, spirit balms are great for this fight. Don't know how much you would hate backtracking, but Sandal does have some for sale down on the ground floor of Fort Drakon...

I usually call in the Dwarves for the Archdemon. Plus, I take control of the mage, provided that he/she is a spirit healer. I turn on the healing aura and drink mana potions as needed. So basically, I usually make Morrigan a spirit healer and play the final battle with her as my active character most of the time. She stays close to the fighting so that she can automatically heal all the melee fighters.

Ok. This time I got real lucky. I managed to get him down from 50% health to about 10% using the ballista before it jammed and then used ranged weapons the rest of the way. I think two characters went down, but I made it.

i have played through a half dozen times, never used ballistas or support troops, just ranged the AD and position myself away from the areas where the darkspawn enter (kill a few as necessary with ranged before they get to me for most part) - two healers is definitely easier! - and i have a ton of potions on hand but end up with a lot left over (which is nice to have for Awakening)
