I haven't played DA2 in a couple months but with the latest patch I decided to do a mage playthrough.

I got my first crash after starting a new game as male mage. Right after the Varric/Cassandra intro, about two seconds into the cutscene with the darkspawn running around the game crashed.

Crash #2 occurred during the cutscene with Flemeth as a dragon dropping a darkspawn out of the sky.

Getting two crashes in the very beginning of the game, both during cutscenes after a patch made me think I should make a post to report it. I have no other problems or crashes in any other games and never had issues with DA2 before.

System specs and crash below

Win7 64bit (all updates, SP1, DX updates, etc)
i5 2500k
Nvidia GTX 570 (275.27 drivers)
OCZ Vertex 2 SSD
750w Corsair PSU
Realtek onboard sound (with latest drivers)

Win7 64bit (all updates, SP1, DX updates, etc)
Nvidia GTX 580 (275.33 drivers)
4GB Ram
750w Corsair PSU
Realtek onboard sound (with latest drivers)

Had about 3 crashes so far.

1st one was at the cutscene just as the first bit of action was to begin.

Then later on and again later on like the other posts here.

For all you having this issue . . . I had a similar problem ... the game would crash right when flemeth would pick up a darkspawn and drop him to his death. My solution was to revert my Nvidia drivers back to 270.61 and presto the problem was resolved, so far I have not suffered any more freezes during the cutscenes.

The procedure that I used was the following:

1. Start Windows 7 in safemode
2. then Uninstall all Nvidia drivers using the control panel.
3. Normally this would be enough, however Nvidia drivers leave behind traces even though they
have been uninstalled. I used a program called Drive Sweeper (Just Googled it and was
able to download for free) to clean out any trace of the Nvidia Driver.
4. Once this was done, I restarted my computer.
5. Then I installed Nvidia Driver 270.61 on my computer.
6. Once the Driver was installed, I did a shut down waited 10 seconds and Rebooted (for good
measure) and presto the game so far works without this crash.

I know this might not work for everyone but it worked for me, just thought I would share. If you are wondering where you can get the Nvidia Driver 270.61 you can find it under the Beta and Archived section in Nvidia Driver Download's page. Do Not Use any driver that is 275.XX as they currently are to unstable with Dragon Age II.

For those that are wondering, my system specs are:

Windows 7 64 Bit (All Updates)
Intel Core i7-970
12 Gigs of Ram
Nvidia GTX 590 SLI
OCZ 120 Gig SSD x2
1000 Ultra Power Supply

I hope this helps . . . Good Luck

I'm having the same damn problem with Flemeth's intro...Now, what gets me is that I never had this issue with drivers 2.61 on my Nvidia GTX570. Now, it would seem that 275.33 is causing these issues, perhaps.

I need 275.33 for The Witcher 2. I am between a rock and a hard place at the moment it would seem. Maybe I'll start a new game and see what happens before I do anything else.
If the drivers are the cause of these crashes, then BioWare needs to let Nvidia know about these issues. I know that Nvidia is in BETA with its 275.50 release. I looked through the notes and didn't see anything in regards to DA2.

WARNING: Use caution when using any third party driver sweep program as this can cause your system to be unstable. Now, some people use these and their systems fun fine, other people have issues and some of them have to do a fresh install. I personally stay away from any such cleaners because of this risk.

nVIDIA knows. They are dragging their feet. Look at the sticky on top, over a month old now. Some people have continued using the bad driver, just scaling image quality back down from Very High to just plain High, as you would have learned from reading the pinned thread (which would also tell you, I believe, that 275.50 offered zero improvement for DA2).

As mentioned in the pinned thread, the only solutions until Nvidia manages to get its act together are to run the game on high textures instead of very high or roll back the drivers.

I didn't know that thread existed. All I did was search this problem through Google. I rarely ever post here, just have an account is all.
At least I know what is going on now concerning Nvidia and the 275.50 driver as well. Well, maybe one day...
I'm personally not going to roll back my drivers. I'm spending much more time with The Witcher 2 these days. So, I really need the drivers I have now in order to get great frame rates.

Perhaps I could scale down to high just before fighting the ogre. Let Flemeth's intro pass and the following conversation, then slide my settings back to very high. I will give that a shot.
