I'm kind of new to BG 1. I've played it a couple of times but have never got round to finishing. I'm starting it again and I've heard some good things about Fighter/Clerics. I have a few questions, though. I've started as a fighter with the following stats:

STR 18/96
DEX 18
CON 18
INT 10
WIS 17
CHR 10

My questions, then:

1) Should I have bothered putting anything into CHR? I couldn't really spare the points from anywhere else.
2) Is starting as a fighter ok? Should I have gone with cleric first?
3) What level should I dual class at?

Thanks in advance!

1) Nah. CHA is mostly useless.
2) Starting as a fighter is the right thing to do.
3) Standard answer: 7 (extra 1/2 attack per round), 9 (for extra HP over level 7), or 13 (for an extra 1/2 attack per round).

Great! Thanks for the quick reply!

If you're only thinking of playing BG1 (as opposed to continuing with the same character in BG2) you might want to dual earlier. You need 64,000 HP to get fighter level 7 and 110,000 to get cleric level 8, i.e. a total of 174,000. However, XP is capped at 161,000 unless you use a mod, so you will never get your fighting abilities back in BG1 (you need one more level in your new class to get your old class abilities back). That's not a disaster if you're dualling to a cleric as they fight reasonably well, but it does mean you will never benefit as a cleric from the extra 1/2 attack a round for fighter level 7. Therefore you might be better off dualling at say level 5 (you only need 43,500 XP then to get your fighting abilities back, so you'll have plenty of time to benefit from them in the game).

I personally think dualclass in BG1 is completely pointless. Multiclassing is clearly the better option, then add in racial bonuses and its the clear winner. But if you're keen on dual class then i agree with Grond0 if you're playing BG1 only and AnonHero if you're playing BG1 and BG2.

Don't put points into weapons that a cleric can't use eg. daggers, swords and bows or they will be waisted, think blunt i.e. frail and club are fine... IMO hammer is one of the best cleric weapons around.

I've got ToSC, BG2 + ToB to play through as well as BG1 so I'm going to put it off till later. Thanks, though.

Just finished the Nashkel mines now, and have done a handful of other side quests as well. Going well, so far. A lot less difficult than I remember somehow. Maybe it's cus I've got decent stats. Took me long enough to get them, rolling again and again at character creation. It got a bit like OCD. :S I could have saved myself a lot of time I bet by downloading a mod or something. It strikes me as really really pointless (and torturous) to have to roll for stats. Old D&D confuses me like that. (example: 18 DEX in plate armor and no penalties?! :?)

Anyhoo, I'm rambling. Maybe it's because I've been up all night playing.
