I'd like to change the language from german to english but I can't find anything on that matter. Am I just being stupid or is there actually no comfortable way?

The language of the game is determined by your selection during the initial install from the ones available on the medium you're using. (AFAIK, The choices are region-specific. Not all languages are on all distributions.)
So, you'll have to un-/re-install, and select "English" instead.

Funny enough it's in the video options. Obviously I didn't think of that. You can manually copy all languages from the CD I think.

I'll have to see if my NA distro has Français as an on-the-fly option!

Well, on my installation I can only change language of the supertitles, not the VO (option is greyed-out.)
