I'm on the verge of starting a new character, a mage, and I was wondering if anyone had a good AW/SH build that would be good at the Paladin-esque role implied by that combination (Good Warrior with Good healing abilities and a mage's normal damage dealing)

Just curious, as I've never built a mage yet, and am worried that I'll end up nerfing him.

Not quite a DnD style paladin, as you probably wont be fighting and heling/support at the same time...you'll choose either one situationally.

You'll want to pump magic to at least 42 (higher is always better, and affects your melee ability if you go that route) as soon as possible, to be able to wear the best armor in the game (personally, I prefer the blood dragon armor as it isnt the highest armor value, but has better secondary benefit. Most of you other points will go into willpower, though raising your dex and con to at least 20 each will also be helpful if you are going to melee.

With a single point in AW and a high magic score (which you'll have anyways) and combat magic off, you can wear the best armor around, and still be a pretty effective caster, with a 24-30% increase in spell cost. You wont feel that cost increase in most battles, and it can be solved by increasing WP, and making use of the infinite mana pots in the game for longer battles. You'll be able to melee technically, by turning on Combat Magic, but not very well, and spells will become prohibitively expensive to cast more than a few. If you want to be an armored combat caster predominantly, you might consider sticking here, and just putting the rest into Willpower, and relying on Staff Mastery for support attacks in between heals/support.

If you want to melee predominately, and support/heal occasionally, you'll want to take the rest of the AW talents, and run with Combat Magic and every sustained toggle (like Rock Armor, Atrcane shield, Flaming weapons, Miasma ... everything except Shimmering shield) on. You'll be more durable than any tank (but not unkillable) and a very competent melee-er, but you wont be able to probably cast more than one or two spells before bottoming out your mana...in other words, very much like a Paladin.

If you want to fully commit to melee, at the expense of any real casting ability, go ahead and turn Shimmering Shield on as well. This will make you functionally invulnerable on Normal difficulty, as nobody can hurt you, or cant hurt you fast enough before you can be healed, but you wont be casting at all...youll be relying fully on Melee and toggles. Anything thats left of your mana pool after running all the sustained abilities will be eaten by Shimmering Shield, as it drains mana.

Oh, and dont think about running that healing aura from the SH tree either...it drains mana then shuts off.  You wont be able to keep it on for more than a few seonds.  Shimmering shield also drains mana, but doesnt shut off for some (probably a bug) reason, so it is effectively permananent.   You could probably live without the second two spells in the SH tree altogether...they are of questionalbe use.

as Spyndel said you have to kinda chose what to do... if to be a caster in armor or a war who dabble in magic

also note that +elemental dmg on equip (gloves and staff expecially) are quite noticeable for a caster dps so if you go around in "warrior mode" you will cast less (due to higher fatigue) and for less dmg

AW+SH is a nice combo is just that you cant have both war melee + caster magic at the same time... more than a nerf is a bit different way to play your mage, if you like the pally concept you should enjoy it, get some creation stuff, somedefensive buffs from other schools and basically you have a pally, if you want to have better CC and dps more similar to a caster then probably you will have to stay away from the melee buff and just use armor for added protection

Well, the Paladin concept is what I'm aiming for, so it sounds great.

Thanks Spyndel and Zilod
