My story is actually kindof similar to the OP's. I had heard of Mass Effect, but didn't think anything of it. It looked kinda cool, but also looked like one of those "fringe" games, you know? Like, "Oh, ...that might be cool, but who knows." Time went on, like a good year and a half, and I forgot all about it. One day, I was bored, and decided to look for game demos to try. I found Mass Effect 2, and decided to try it out. Played the demo with my jaw on the floor. Immediately got ME1 & 2 and played through both. Hooked 4evaaarrr!

I had heard about Mass Effect being brilliant, and I wanted to see it first hand.
I went and bought Mass Effect 1, 2 and few other games.
It's been one of my favourite games ever since.

Ha, I w ould've taken your 60 bucks and never came back, sucka!

Kailjaiden wrote...

Hey Fellow MEs, I'll start.

I was having a terrible day and stayed home sick from work for a few days and was so bored of playing my other games that I thought to myself, "If I'm gonna be home sick for a while might as well get a new game to play."

My sister had the car that day so I couldn't leave. I told her to come home and pick up my 60 bucks and then go buy me something. After a little argument lol, I talked her into going to the store. She asked me what kind of games I like so she knows what to get. She also asked "You want another Star Wars game?"

She remembers me playing KOTOR constantly and she liked watching me play it. .... (PS. BIOWARE I WANT KOTOR 3!) So she finally left and came back with one brand spankin new, still in the plastic wrapping, game and said "Here you go you big baby! Now never make me do that again."

I looked down and the title reads MASS EFFECT. To be honest I was like, "WTF is this crap sis?" She replies "How the F am I suppossed to know what you wanted!?"

I then said "Okay fine whatever I'll try it out."

The disk tray pops open...

We both sit down...

It was night time btw so we turned off all the lights and sat in front of the big screen.

"WAIT THIS IS BIOWARE?" I yell out.

She responds "The F you talking about?"

"Nothin... just don't worry about it." I tell her, then take sip of my cough sryup.

I select New Career :

And thus was the story of how my sister and I played this game all the way through in two days with our jaws dropped to the floor... My sister asked me to choose Kaiden, I choose Ashley... My sister cried. I laughed at her.

.........she punched me in the shoulder..... really hard like.

At the very end the credits came up, and we were hooked forever. And that's my story!

Thanks for reading! Want to hear your stories too!

My story begins with ME2 having shamefully not played the first game. But my story is most likely very different from most. First of all I'm a woman and we are probably not associated with gaming quite like guys are. Secondly, my last real gaming fad was 7 or 8 years ago with Doom 3 and before that, the PS1. Anyway about 11 months ago I was in the supermarket and I saw the PS3 on sale there for like £70 off and with a move controller thrown in as well. Now as I'm a big Formula One racing fan I decided to buy one so I could play F1 2010 on it. I got the PS3 using loyalty reward points for £32 and bought the F1 game. The game was good but I played it only for a few weeks before getting hooked on another driving game called Gran Tourismo 5. I was quite content with my driving games until in early February this year, my boyfriend turned up with a "late Xmas present". It was the same shape as a Blu-ray and sounded like one when I shook it. I opened it to see Mass Effect 2 for the PS3. I smiled at him and asked him "what's this game about?". He said that he'd played both Mass Effect games and loved them, that BioWare were the best at making role playing games and that as a sci-fi fan I'd appreciate the story, characters and the game universe. He also said he'd take it back and get a different game if I wanted but that I should try it first as he knew I'd love it. So, I took the game and after 4 days of my bf pestering me about what I thought of it I decided to stick it in the console and spend the free afternoon that I had trying it. The PS3 whirred away and installed the game and after 10 minutes or so the BioWare splash screen hits the screen. I selected new game, male and the sit enthralled as the Normandy patrols the sector for missing ships and gets attacked by the unknown vessel. Soon the ship is in pieces and the camera zooms in on "Commander Shepard". That's me! I thought and soon I was telling "Ashley" to get too the shuttle whilst I took the controls of shep for the very first time to rescue someone called "joker". I sat stunned as I was thrown out into space and the ship was torn apart. Who were these guys? And oh my god, Shepard, me, I gonna die less than 5 minutes into the game!!!' But then I got to create, rebuild my very own commander Shepard. Soon enough I was trying to escape the medical facility, teamed up with some guys called Jacob and Wilson, who turned out to be a traitor and was shot in the face by an attractive woman called Miranda. Soon I met the Illusive Man whose voice sounded so familiar but I couldn't place it and then got persuaded to go to some colony called freedom's progress. That was tougher but I got through it and then, I met the Illusive Man again, was re-acquainted with joker and saw the new starship that looked like the ship I got tossed out of a few hours earlier. Even better, I realised that this shiny new ship was mine! And now I had to assemble a team of bad asses to fight some race called "the collectors" who were abducting humans and almost killed my shep 2 hours earlier. I realised that it was time to switch off and return to my normal every day activities but that 2 hours had just flown past and that Mass Effect 2 was the best Xmas present I'd had :) 6 months on and I now play it on the pc, have completed it twice and am currently on my third playthrough on the pc. I never dud finish it on the PS3 as I never fully attuned myself to the analog sticks. I was too far out of gaming after 8 years to get the knack overnight but the controls on the pc are very good and now I'm totally hooked. So, that's my ME story. Sorry it's been a long one but then, it's been a long time since I've enjoyed a computer game as much as this :)

As not that big a gamer recently (The only things I keep my ear to the ground for are Bohemia Interactive's ArmA series and the Total War games) I didn't hear much about it, in fact it wasn't till I saw the cinematic trailer I even heard of it!

Funny story. I discovered it like, a year after it was out.

A buddy of mine had gamefly, and he constantly saw it on the suggestions list, so he finally caved it and rented it.

He urged me to buy it after he was done, he said it was a great shooter, rpg, and had AMAZING story and depth.

I got it a couple of months later.

Fast forward to today, and I have 20+ sheps (unique breakthroughs, mind you) ready for ME3.

Well I owe my discovery of Mass Effect to IGN. Yeah IGN. See I didn't get my Xbox 360 until the Winter of 2009. I always wanted to get a Xbox 360, but my parents could not afford one for me. I nearly skipped the PS2/Xbox/GameCube Generation completely. It wasn't until I actually had a paying job at my local CVS I got my first Xbox 360. Now at this point the only games I ever heard about for the the system was either Call of Duty, Fable, or Halo. However growing up I always been a huge RPG fan. What I did was google searched "best Xbox 360 games." The search lead me to IGN, who ranked Mass Effect at that time "Number 1." Interested in the game, I asked my little brother best friend if he had Mass Effect. He said yeah and I borrowed it from him. I liked so much that I bought the game from him. Then Mass Effect 2 came around and I have been hooked ever since. Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are the only games I have ever played more than one complete playthrough.

I'd followed BioWare's game development since Knights of the Old Republic, seeing if they were going to make a followup. Then it became clear that BioWare wanted to created their own intellectual properties, I think with an announcement that they were working on Jade Empire and Dragon Age. My earliest memory of Mass Effect was probably 2005. I specifically bought an XBox 360 the day that Mass Effect came out in 2007 because, while I suspected a PC version was in the works, I thought it would be a year until it was released. And I didn't want to wait that long.

I was getting bored with my games at the time so I went to my local gamestop. I was at the game rack and it was a coin-flip between Bioshock and Mass Effect based on the cover art. I got Mass Effect first, beat it to death, got ME2 and beat that to death, then a few years later I get Bioshock 1 and 2 after I got my job and beat them to death too. I am convinced that I still haven't found/seen everything these games have to offer.

I was told about it by a friend. I knew about it beforehand but my friend really got me interested. I got it on 360 late 2007.

My first experience with Bioware games was Baldur's Gate series.

What follows however may seem cold:
As with all Bioware titles I was aware of Mass Effect #1 before its initial release for the XBOX360. A bit of foreknowledge: I vowed at 12 to never ever use or purchase a console. So I was disheartened for all future Bioware games and especially the following two Mass Effect games that would follow theorizing that there would no pc release for them.

Fast forward nearly a whole year.......

Then after completing all my old yet unplayed RPG's (about 10) I went looking in the winter of 2008 for more RPG's via wikipedia's yearly game page and was astounded to see a release of Mass Effect for PC! Ordered it the next day and have been hooked on the Mass Effect series and every other Bioware game ever since!!!!!

Played Dragon Age first, and I thought it was an excellent story and wanted more. I do not have an XBox so I really didn't follow their games too much. So I bought Mass Effect for PC, well because it was in space, it had aliens, and it had the Mako, which reminded of the old game moon patrol. Been hooked on the series since.

Well a couple years ago one of my good friends had been loaning me some of his Xbox games because I had just barely gotten my 360 and I didn't have many games for it yet. After getting me hooked on games like Fable and Black he handed me his copy of Mass Effect and said "play it." I took it home and couldn't force myself through the first mission. So I gave the game back to him and got Fable again. Two years later I was browsing through my local Blockbuster trying desperately to find a good game to rent and my brother handed me Mass Effect 2. I thought "ah what the h**l, why not?" I popped it in and couldn't stop playing it. Close to the end of the game my brother wanted a different game since he hated it and we can only have one out so that was the end of that.
Then after DA2 was released and I was fairly disappointed due to it being nothing like Origins, Bioware started giving away copies of ME2 to DA2 owners on the PC. I instantly went and bought the first one for my PC. Couldn't get the first one to work so EA is sending me a disk copy, and I refuse to play the second one without a playthrough of ME1.

I bought Dragon Age Origins and had the Blood Dragon Armor DLC. I seen it could be used on Mass Effect 2. I had never heard of the game at all. But I didn't have any other game I wanted to play for a while so I figured what the heck for $20 if I like it great if I don't then thats fine to. ME was a good game nothing great but good enough to make me want to buy ME2.

Who knew? Advertisements actually do work.

Sure, I'll share.

Ever since my teen years I'd be a huge RPG fan (consisting of primarily JRPGs) but never got around to any WRPGs, despite knowing about them growing up (Fallout, Elder Scrolls etc.). Fast forward to 2007 - my tastes in gaming mature and as an avid gamer I keep abreast of what the latest and greatest games are. Naturally during that year I heard a great deal about the then 360 exclusive Mass Effect. I was interested, but I never owned a 360 so I had no way of playing it at the time. I pretty much ignore the series even after the release of ME2 in 2010.

Later that same year though, I watched the debut trailer for ME3 during the Spike Awards and I was floored. I couldn't believe those were CG graphics and not a real life movie trailer. So I research and discover that the first ME was ported to the PC, and the 2nd would be arriving in early 2011 for the PS3 (which I do own). Without a second though I put the 1st game on my Steam account's wishlist, and a good friend of mine bought it for me for Christmas that year. Played through without knowing a thing about the game other than it got amazing reviews and thoroughly enjoyed it (1st run was as a Paragon Solider, Liara romanced, Kaiden killed, Rachni Queen, Wrex and Concil all survive). Got the PS3 version of ME2 and beat that too. Now I'm working on my 2nd playthrough for both games (ME1 imported ME1 character on Hardcore, ME2 Imported ME2 character on Insanity). Then, I bought the PC version of ME2 on Steam for $6.80 during a sale, so that I could see what an imported Shepard playthrough will be like. Once I start this particular playthrough, I play to run a Renegade Engineer. Then as ME3 nears, I'll do a Femshep Adept ME1 that I'll import to ME2.

Yeah if you couldn't guess by now I love the hell out of this series.

The game had been out for several weeks already and I have never really had an interest in RPG's so I didn't even consider buying it.  I was at blockbuster looking for a game to rent and saw ME1 there. I remember reading reviews that all loved the game so I decided to give it a shot. I got home with the game and started playing it around 6pm. I played it until about 2am. I woke up at 10am the next day, took the game back to blockbuster, and immediately went to my closest gamestop and bought it. I was so amazed at how attached I had become to the characters and the story. I couldn't get enough!!!

I still have my original ME1 copy with the "Only on XBOX 360" tag on it. I am holding on to it hoping that it might be worth some money some day since they don't make that box anymore after it came out on pc.

I was looking for something to play. Hadn't considered ME at all when it was out - the reviews I read didn't ring my gaming bell. But I bought ME2 for the shooty action (sue me) and thought - eh 'spose I should play ME first. That's it really. ME2 was my first Bioware game.

You could say ME2 converted me to Single player RPG's ;-)

I was just inerested in playing some space game, never played a RPG game. Didn't think Mass Effect was much, but Steam had it discounted. So I bought it, at first thought it was a wannabe halo game. I was about to quit until my guy punched this scientist in the face which made me laugh my ass off.

Continued to play it, and got addicted. Loved the RPG side of it, traveling through space, getting laid in the process(which was a total surprise). I knew nothing about thsi game but loved where how I was in control of the campaign, and never knowing what was going to happen after every other decision in the game. Fell in love with the game now bioware has a huge Mass Effect Fanboy now.

My boyfriend loves the game and was trying to finish it up during Christmas break one year. At first, the game looked amazing, but it didn't really interest me in playing. Of course, I was distracted by doing my own thing, so I really wasn't paying too much attention. Well, he finished Mass Effect 1 and we had to go back to school, so I couldn't play it like I wanted. He was going to start Mass Effect 2 in the summer, and I asked him if I could play Mass Effect 1.

The summer started, and needless to say, Mass Effect 1 was literally the only thing I played all summer. I fell in love with the game. I don't think I can play anything else for a while!
