I was just having a shower with mass effect 2 music playing in the system and had some new thoughts regarding the reapers and why the hell they are such a bunch of twads.
Why are the reapers doing what they do?
The reapers are at the core , a bunch of inorganics who turn up from dark space to harvest organic and sapient life forms. I remember something similar from the Gah Lak Tus machines in ultimate nightmare series of marvel. The reapers are perhaps looking for a way to become organic creatures. They are looking for that perfect race with the most diverse genetic background that can turn them into organics from inorganics. Something that would help them become real like pinochio. Maybe they want to feel emotions or the senses, like pain, horror, love, fear. In fact this could be the reason why the heretic geth were interested in worshiping these Gods. That math error falacy probably led to the conclusion that the normal geth wanted to understand organics, while the heretics wanted to become organics like the reapers. This is why the geth send Legion to "understand" organic sapients. There is also a very interesting plot point that reveals that Legion actually starts feeling some kind of emotional attachment to shepard. He uses part of his armor to fix himself and the "no data available" line. This is where the prothean beacons come into picture. Perhaps the protheans figured out that the reapers are actually trying to become organics because they fail to understand them. Which is why they build those beacons which transmit emotions. if we see the visions that shepard experiences, they point out to the pain and agony caused by the reapers to the protheans. The protheans, in their last effort to warn and save future races, created the beacons, a means to transmit the feelings, emotions, thoughts, and all the fuzzy stuff that organics feel, into the minds of the reapers.
From what I see , there are too many reapers and even if Shepard manages to get the entire universe's races together to stop them, it would be next to impossible to stop so many reapers, unless he has some kind of superweapon. The beacons now transmitted into Shepard's mind will act as that superweapon and depending on the decisions that Shepard made in the previous games and in ME3, he will either have all the races help him while he finishes the process of infiltrating into the reaper's minds or sacrifice himself.
What I think is that the reapers are vying to become organics because they want to understand them. Their lack of the ability to feel and experience stuff the way sapient life does, also makes them feel repulsed by them. The renegade shepard may use this to actually destroy the reapers by transmitting all the horrific emotions that the beacons plant in his mind. I started thinking into why Harbinger always says the line "This, hurts you!". It is more like a "this hurts you, but not me, because we are superior and do not feel rudimentary senses". This is why the protheans invented the beacons. Using the knowledge of the beacons , one can communicate emotions, feelings and experiences straight into the reapers minds.

Querry, Why would anyone want to become a meat bag? It is obvious that the Reapers are superior.

The Reapers exist for one reason only.
Because Shepard needs a worthy opponent to exterminate. Killing mercs is crap duty for a true badass like Shepard. He needs real enemies against which to demonstrate the full extent of his badassery.
