Having recently read over an artical post origanally by gamesradar a while back and then reposted as part of their five year anniversary "classic radar," entitled "ten things adults want to see from games" (paraphrasing because I can't be bothered to check.) The issues were standard fair for a list of that stature however one of them caught my attention, the entry was (again, paraphrasing) "Mature Sex Scenes"

Now don't get me wrong, I love gamesradar, it's probably my favourite games site but to me the inclusion of "Mature sex scenes" seemed a little bit too much as a clever way to describe "MOAR PAYNUS AND VA JAY JAY THANKS!" but alas it got me thinking.

Romances have been an interesting part of mass effect since the very first game and funnily enough, the first game is the only one to have ever come close to getting it right. The topic of sex scenes has come up a lot on these fourms, mainly as part of speculation for mass effect 3, and one game that was sighted as something that bioware should take inspiration from was the lovely eastern european rpg the witcher 2. Now I'm not going to criticise the witcher 2 as a game because I havn't played it, (although I plan to) but I have seen the sex scene in the game and to me it's something that can only be described as soft core pornography. It's more remeniscent of the sex scenes in God of War, but at least in that they cut away to a vase falling over or some underage lesbians touching each other. (And no, I'm not kidding)

In the witcher 2 however there are no vases, nor are there any underage lesbians, (and I don't know if that's for better or worse) It's all there for the eyes to see, and while this may seem like a "mature portrayal of sex" (which if you've seen the scene, you'll soon realise that it certainly isn't, sorry but the whole "you need a bath" thing doesn't quite work for me) I don't think it is at all right for mass effect, I love garrus vakarian as a character and I thought that his romance was done very well (right up to the "sex" scene itself which was frankly quite disappointing and something that I'll get to in a moment) but if I want to see him naked (and believe me I don't)  I'll go look up some rule 34, because that's not what I play a game like mass effect for and it's certainly not what I would expect from a "mature sex scene."

On the other scale, we have the sex scenes from mass effect 2, which were all more or less fully clothed, behind closed doors love affairs which felt forced and un-natural, which is perticularly unfortunate because I thought that the build up to some of them was rather interesting, (*cough* garrus *cough*) but alas all I get as a head bump? And of course for my male shepard, miranda, yeah she took her top of and groped me like an ape, mature am I right? No, forced! 

Now there are two sides to the spectrum, each is on the brink of what I find acceptable, one's too pornographic and the others too soft, both mess with the universe in way I dont like at all, on one hand, neither of my shepards both paragon and paragade, are perverts, but on the other hand they are not personality drained manikins, who had the whole lady parts coversation explained to them by their mother when they were sixteen! And like I said on another thread, who exactly has sex for the first time, fully clothed?


Now the only solution I can clearly see is to take the sex scenes from mass effect 1, make them more meaningful and personal, and plop them into mass effect 3 with more romace options and same sex romances. There, are we good? Well actually yes, a little less of what seemed like an assault on the commander, maybe a little more gentle, but yes.

You see, for me, a mature romance isn't about nudity and sex, it's about personal interaction between two people and a mature sex scene is about keeping the balance between that and nudity at the right level so as not to seem forced and unrealistic. It's something that I really don't think has ever been pulled off correctly, it's a tough feat to take on but I really think that if anyone can do it, spiderman, er... I mean, bioware can.

As I've noted before on other threads, Mass effect has a very mature setting, it deals with poverty, racism, terrorism ect. and one of it's defining features for me at least is it's fully fleshed out universe. (I mean I'm sorry, but what other games have lore entries about the economic state of a particular race in the game?) I think having a mature romance should be part of that experiance, instead of having some childish sexual fantasy, or heavily censored nonsensical drible. 

So any way you may have noticed that all of that was just a meaningless and longwinded stream of feckless opinion, but it was all in fact a clever trick, a disguise for something that I probably could have asked in seconds instead of the 20 minutes I took to write and proof read all of this.

Do you want more nudity in the sex scenes, do you think it's required to make it more mature or do you just want to see what a turian looks like behind all that armour? Or, do you want it the mass effect 2 way, do you think nudity is not required to have a realistic adult love scene, and do you think that my requests of a medium degree of true sexual content, is simply a juvenial pot dream? Please, post your opinions below!

I realise that this may have been tedious to read through but it is something I find interesting so do note if you think I should write these things shorter next time around, thanks.

 Mass effect 1 got it right. Wasn't cringe worthy clothes rubbing, or softcore porn.  
The sort of thing where you'd rather nobody walk in on you while it's happening, but you needn't worry about it too much.

Despite being a fan of Garrus romance, I don't wanna watch him and Shepard having sex. I'm quite satisfied with ME2 way of handling things. A few more... exposed romance scenes may be fine, but let's not go all the way down there.

Okay, to be serious, I don't think sex scenes need to show total, front-view nudity. You can have a perfectly good sex scene without. However, I don't see the problem with full nudity. In fact, maybe it's time BioWare took a stand against those people who called Mass Effect a porn game. However, I wouldn't want the nudity to push the age rating up to 18 (in Britain ME1 is a 12 and ME2 is a 15). I hate to admit it but I'm under 18, and I can't have 18-rated games, or rarely anyway. I think you're right that a mature sex scene isn't about how much is shown but about "personal interaction".

And no, I don't want to see Garrus naked. Not just because I'm a dude. I think ME1 had the right kind of sex scene, personally. It struck that balance you were talking about.

Seriously though, ME2 did seem a bit forced. Mass 1 did it right where it was adult, but not where it was a full-blown porno. Here's hoping that Mass 3 goes the route Mass 1 did.

Okay, I phrased some of that badly. I'm not afraid to admit I'm under 18 (I'm 14 btw), I just like to come across as a mature gamer (not saying I only want to play games with high age ratings). Also, I know about the side boob scene from ME1. I was trying to say what Kasai666 said, you can't have too much side boob. Again, I phrased it badly.

I think this demand for mature content goes further than just partial nudity; they had better start shouldering the same level of mature content as the movie industry if they want to keep their adult audience from moving on.

Grinding in your unmentionables... not the best way to do it.

I think ME1's sex scenes were almost universally praised by critics, so hopefully they intend to do something similar with ME3.

To answer the question of the title, too much side boob is soft core pornography level, apparently; to clarify soft core will show full frontal from the waist up. I'm a little concerned that now I'm an expert on soft core pornography, though. ME1 got it almost right and ME2 got it almost wrong. What ME3 needs is a balance of Showing almost as much skin as ME1 and having unique animations for each LI like in ME2. On another note, I think gamers will be unsatisfied if they can't do more than just snuggling in Shepard's quarters in the after play-through gameplay.

lol this is quite funny, i thought mass effect was rated M anyway? as far as im concerned they could have a full on hardcore 5 minute sex scene and i wouldnt be bothered. i dont see what is the problem with annimated characters getting naked? they arent real afterall.. does anybody actually get a hard on from these scenes lol?

i personally believe that we deserve a hefty sex scene from shepard significant other. i mean we have endured endless dialogue with them for a long time (in some cases spread across different titles), and do sidequests to help them out with problems. the least shepard can get is some decent action that doesnt last 10 seconds, and its always missionary position. how unrealistic

Honestly? The Miranda sex scene is the only one that even come close to being one. and that's just her revealing her bra.

I'm of the opinion that if games want to be considered more than a children's toy...they need to push the boundaries and get to the same place that movies are. Does that mean we need full porn in games? Hell no.

But having the characters being tastefully nude would not be a bad thing. I'm reminded of the age old arguement. "Oh...tons of blood and gore and killing 50,000 humanoids is ok, but if we see a nipple it's a traumatic event!" It's retarded and needs to stop. The ME series is an M rated series. It needs to start acting like one.

OH, and I'm 33 since we're giving out ages for our arguements. lol

"Critics" being a category which Fox shouldn't be within a light year of. Seriously, why tone down anything for that thing? Seems Bioware's target audience isn't the mindless rabble that Fox caters to.

The thing is, in sexual situations, when you go full frontal, a guy is naturally gonna be erm..... at attention, so that is not only very distracting, but also pushes it into porn territory. Unless femshep waits for Kaidan as he's stepping out of the shower or something...... and my mind just went to bad places....

ME1 was perfect, ME2 worked for some of the aliens (let's not go for Fornax, plz). I don't want fanservice, meaning nudity just for the sake of nudity. On the other hand, we can have asari strippers and Kelly dancing around in the skin-tight-leggy-sorta-thongie-thing, but we're going to show that people who actually care about each other can't get past first base? Nudity if necessary, but not necessarily nudity. Basically, if it makes sense, put it in. If it's gratuitous, don't. Honestly, I'm more interested in the character interaction than the visuals. How they handled that part of the relationship in LotSB, for instance, was spot on.
