Heh. CDPR started a trend.
Yup but those are all the choices just for one level. Witcher 2 doesn't even offer that many for one quest.
It actually might if you factor in stuff like traps, lures, signs, and bombs. But you can't flowchart it because, unlike Deus Ex, Witcher isn't really about entry or movement through a level - more about how you approach individual encounters.

Yeah, the best possible publicity they could get is people talking about how awesome the leaked beta was. This was either intentional, or really good luck.

You're comparing apples and oranges there Elton. What's Geralt supposed to do, hack the main terminal at the sorceress lodge, swim under the castle moat, or wield his M-16 and just blaze his way in?
Geralt either kicks or chases tail.

That is classic Deus Ex multiple entry level design, right there.

I don't think it's fair to "credit" Witcher or CDPR with anything on that flowchart.

Agreed. What I was initially referencing was CDPR showing a flowchart to highlight their game. And in fact Gop had mentioned the original Deus Ex as an influence on TW2.

I didn't know that, thanks slimgrin. I like it when games I love have been influenced by games I love! OT, feeling ever more excited about Human Revolution. Come on August!

True, hence the gearing of these games towards the predominantly male video game market. It's nice to see, however, that games like Mass Effect are breaking that senseless barrier, especially with the new FemShep marketing plans BioWare has in store for Mass Effect 3.
Anyways, on a side note, I recently re-played Deus Ex 1, and after playing the Beta for DXHR, the latter has a VERY high leap to make if it is to compete with its best-selling predecessor or outshine it.

The art direction, grid inventory, dialogue system, augmentation choices, multiple ways to approach situations, the music, the story are all fantastic. I had some doubts before but after playing the beta I went ahead and preordered. I can't wait for this game.

I'm not gonna check out the beta since I want a "pure" (non-lethal, btw.) experience, but it's nice to see this large a positive reaction.

Got around to finishing the beta yesterday and its so much damn fun. While its still very much a beta with some rough edges, you can tell that the core gameplay design choices are solid and worthy of Deus Ex.

High praise Brock. I'm prying myself away from TW2 today and diving in. How long was it?

Yeah I stopped playing after I confirmed that my pre-order would not be wasted or the same reason.

Hmmm...not sure exactly how long the beta is but I went pretty slow and tried to explore and took the stealthy route most of the time and I'd guess the whole thing took anywhere from 8-12 hours.
Its definitely still in beta and on a technical level the graphics, character models and some of the animations aren't anything to write home about, but I loved most everything else.
There is nothing more satisfying than crawling through the airducts, stun gunning some cops and hiding their bodies back in the airducts. Or busting through a wall Kool Aid man style to knock out some punk on the other side. And if you hack people's computers and get their emails you'll find a bunch of nice references to Deus Ex.
Playing this beta has made me fire up the original Deus Ex again:wizard:

Dunno, did you guys see those new ingame gameplay videos on youtube from the leaked beta?
It's incredible, this game even has the potential to beat my favorite no1 game ME3!!!
After seeing the first 20 min of the beta I preordered it. It cant fail anymore...
There are rumors that the developers released the beta on purpose, to catch more customers...
17 minutes out of the first 20 minutes were cut scenes! Zzzzzz
And the majority of the cut scenes were pretty boring IMO. What's the deal with moving cutscenes where you are on rails, but you can pan the camera around as the PC is forced to move in a specific line? Feels gimmicky. Was this in the first Deus Ex game?
I did like the part where your coworker tells you to stop reading her emails, however.
/thanks for sharing this video

If I did have one big complaint about the beta its how it has the horribly compressed, BINK pre-rendered in game cutscenes. I truly hate how games are doing that more and more now. I wonder if thats just a console centric thing for memory's sake or what, but it makes no sense as they're just rendered in the engine yet regurgitated back all pixelated and terrible looking.
What is a BINK?

What is a BINK?
A video format and the software for playing it.
Pretty much all BioWare games use it for their prerendered cutscenes, producing a noticable drop in quality from the ingame engine.

cut scene - fight - cut scene - fight - cut scene
Can't a story be told in an imaginative way without cut scenes? If the first 20 minutes is any indication, there will be more cut scene than actual game in Deus Ex

Some of my favorite decades-old games had FMV cutscenes. Like Wing Commander. Also, the original Deus Ex had cutscenes, though they were rendered in-engine. The game opens with one, in fact.
But the answer to your question is yes, they can. Dead Space 2 - from what I could tell when I watched Dave of Canada play it on Livestream - pulled off some excellent cinematic moments without taking the player out of the engine or even his own perspective.
In fact, many of those moments relied on maintaining the same player perspective as the rest of the game.

How did we get to this point in the evolution of games where the majority are interactive movies comprised of:
cut scene - fight - cut scene - fight - cut scene

Thats just the intro, don't worry. You get into the actual gameplay soon after when you arrive at Sariff headquarters. It's a big building you're free to roam in. But don't dally too long. Get to the chopper pad.
