Pretty much all BioWare games use it for their prerendered cutscenes, producing a noticable drop in quality from the ingame engine.
I only really noticed it a handful of times in DAO and quite a bit in ME2 and DA2. But for ME1 on the PC I don't recall it being used much there- stuff like the Normandy landing and taking off seemed like it wasn't as obviously prerendered BINK like the same landing/taking off scenes are in ME2.
I really do wonder why developers use it as much as they do? Is it to save disk space or what? It would at least be nice if they were available in the same resolution as you were playing at as many times on PC at least its clearly a 720p cutscene that looks like garbage compared to playing in game at ~1080p.

Thats just the intro, don't worry. You get into the actual gameplay soon after when you arrive at Sariff headquarters. It's a big building you're free to roam in. But don't dally too long. Get to the chopper pad.
Yeah and the Detroit hub opens up things even more...
