Is this EA Origin project going to affect digital downloads for ME3?

I'm a regular Steam/GOG customer (great way to find obscure games or ones that aren't sold in shops any more) but like to have hard-copies of my favourites. I guess we'll see after E3 if this new distribution will effect any ME3 pre-order goodies but I'll probably be forced to use it at some point anyway when TOR launches so it won't really bother me if I have to use it if I want a digital copy (and honestly, I do want to play ME3 on launch day without waiting for it to come in the mail from overseas and what Aussie wants to pay $80-120 AUD for something that is $60 or so in the US when our dollar is so high?).

EA isn't stupid I'm pretty sure
I'm not so convinced. I sometimes get the feeling that EA has absolutly no idea what customers actuall want.
Its like aiming DA2 for a wider audience. They see the CoD players in a statistik and think "lets get them".
No they see steam revenues in a statistic and think they can get them too.
Also its quite different to the gog deal as gog also takes care of compatibility with modern PC systems.
Not selling them on gog would often mean not selling them at all.

Yeah, I put that in #4.I love Gog. They've just signed on EA as a supported publisher, so they're bringing games like "Crusader: No Remorse" [vid] on the shelf, *So Excited

Edit: after reading the announcement on GOG, it would seem it does not include the System Shock series.

You can bet at the very least there'll be some kind of "Origin-only" exclusive pre-order item that nobody else will be able to get through any other means, even if it's just a piece of armour or a weapon or something.

actually now that I think about it, I've been hearing all those rumors and things about EA rushing Dragon Age 2 out of greediness, so I suppose they are a little bit silly. I'm still sure they won't screw over people too much...hopefully.

If it was more like GOG than steam, I would use it. .. It is EA though, and they don't really like the hassle-free approach.
Yet. Be patient. GOG is gaining more steam as it goes, and considering System Shock 2 is perhaps the single most requested game for it, I'm guessing it'll only be a matter of time. (I hope, since I've never played it myself)marshalleck wrote...

I'll probably still try to buy ME3 if its a origins only release but here is a problem with digital distributions:
Steam has generally been around for longer than most, starting around CS:S and HL2. Through that time and experience, it has become the awesome service it is. It, in my eyes, is the only digital distribution company/software that is doing things correctly.
Will Origin be good on release? Definitely not.
Could it become a good service? Probably, if they're smart with it.
Could it become a competitor to Steam? This is EA were talking about. It'll have the games, but Steam will probably have the lower prices, among other things, including a wider variety of games and more indie supportive.
I can perfectly understand having an Origins buy-bonus, but if they make the bonus gamebreaking... nuff said.
I doubt they'll do a origins only release, and I do hope that it becomes a worthy competitor to Steam. I doubt it'll ever be as good, but nonetheless, competition fuels market progress some of the time, and it's the consumers that normally win due to competing in prices.

It's only Origin-only for people who want digital distribution. You'll be able to get a boxed copy at any retailer you'd expect to stock MMORPGs.Spartanburger wrote...

This. I was very unimpressed at EA's previous forays into digital distrubution. It's either Steam or retail or I'm not going to buy it. Simple as that.

It's still a silly stance to take from them.
I rarely, if ever, buy games from stores since I started using Steam. I was planning to maybe check out TOR, to see if it was something I might like. The bits I heard that they wanted to try a slightly different thing than WoW intrigued me, as I got a bit bored with that game after having done the same grind from vanilla to end of Wrath with a character of each class.
Tying the game to a digital distribution I would only use for that single game means I'm not even gonna bother. That's one lost sale already for them, then. And I'm not naive enough to think I'm a unique snowflake in this regard. There will be plenty of others thinking like me, meaning they are loosing out on sales there.
Normally the question is if the loss of sales outweighs the increased cut they get, but this is an MMO. The main income comes from subs. Cutting subs means cutting drastically in income. And even worse: cutting subs means the gameworld will be emptier, in a gametype that is all about having as many people as possible to interact with.
From my point of view, they are shooting themselves in their feet with a move like this, and it makes me think back on the old days of 3DFX deciding to bully in on gfxcards instead of just supplying chips for them, and eventually dismembering their own feet by the move that they lost their incomebase in the end.

If TOR (for digital sales) becomes Origin-only, I certainly won't be buying it. I am not too sure about it at the moment about it (although it seems promising), but in case it really becomes Origin-only I'll abandon it for sure. And they really shouldn't dare to have ME3 become Origin-only, since I'll just as easily pirate it then, no matter how much I love the series and am willing to pay for it. The few times I dealt with EA customer support and EA Store, were ****ty at best.

Thank you for clearing that up. I heard from IGD (Inside Gaming Daily) something along the lines of "TOR for the PC will only be avalibe through this service."marshalleck wrote...

Whoops then.
Actually makes me much more happy about it because if I want to get the collectors edition I'd only be able to get it in a physical copy instead of digital.

Same here, I mostly only buy physical copies of games. I wanna put the box up with my other game boxes so I can glance at my collection as I sometimes do and be pleased.

This exclusive and limited package includes:
So these are the extras for Origin:
N7 Arsenal Pack
Access to an additional downloadable mission and character
Robotic Dog
Squadmate Alternate Outfit Pack
Tempting, but I have a giftcard elsewhere >_> I'm hoping this won't be the only digital version available.
