Best party composition for minimal micromanaging of NPC's?

I was hoping that others had maybe found a way in which to build a party where you can safely ignore your party members during combat and focus on your own character, much like you would in Mass Effect (a game I adore). What PC class and build should I play? What NPC's should I take with me and how should I spec them? What tactics options should I use with this build? The less I have to control the party NPC's, the better.

Alistair as a tank has little need to be micro'd, just set up his tactics well (as the default options are terrible), and he'll do well the entire game.
Wynne goes without saying, really. The healer's job is pretty automatic if you set tactics up properly. The only thing you might want to micro is the use of Group Heal, Lifeward, Vessel of the Spirit and Mass Rejuvenation.
Archer Leliana (can't imagine anyone using her for anything else without a respec), again, little to no micro required because all of an archer's attacks are single target that can be handled through tactics.
Proper use of tactics is what really defines how well your group works automatically. The most important thing I've found is that you want your group members to focus fire their damage on whoever the tank is targeting.
Also, avoid dual wield rogues if you don't want to micro. DW rogues work best when you get them behind an enemy for backstabs, otherwise their efficacy is limited substantially.

The most non-thinking set up I could imagine with decent presets would be Alistair (Defender), Wynne (Healer), and Leliana (Damager) [keep her ranged for easier management]. Morrigan makes for an excellent Debuffer if thats more you're liking. The other companions are a bit more complex in regard to their abilities and scenarios they are in such as Zevran, whom you have to move in order to constantly backstab.

Alistair, Wynne and Leliana.
Exactly the group I was going to suggest.

It also provides the option to control your own character for you, and to make Rogues properly move into position for backstabs. Those are optional of course.

Tank: Allistar or Leliana (Leliana with High Dex, Wade's gear will work. Using Song of Valor to boost Mana Regen is a good tactic. If using a DW Leliana, her secondary Spec should be Duelist. If archer, use Ranger.)
Mage Specs/Trees:
PC: Spirit Healer/Blood Mage - Get Revival in Spirit Healer and full Blood Mage Tree. Get Inferno, Blizzard, Tempest, Rock Armor, Heal, Crushing Prison, Mana Clash and Animate Dead. Primary Damage Dealer/AOE Death Cannon. (all Spells in between)
Wynne: All Spirit Healer/Secondary is your Choice (I did Blood Mage for the stat boost). - Get All Spirit Healer, All Creation minus Summoning, Rock Armor, Flaming Weapons.
Use for Healing/Glyphs/Buffs.
Morrigan: Shapeshifter/Spirit Healer (Shapeshifter Tree is negligible) - Get All Spirit Healer, All Entropy, Regeneration, Crushing Prison, Spell Ward.
Use for Debuffing/CC.
Gameplan: Nuke the living crap out of enemies before they get near you. In single combat, Leliena has enough Dex to rarely get hit or Allistar can tank. Another Bonus here is you can have Flaming Weapons, Frost Weapons and Telekinetic weapons all up at the same time. Two Cleansing Auras, 3 ways to revive, 8 ways to heal.

3 Mage + Tank. What even works in 3 Mage + Bard/Duelist. Have Morrigan and Wynne both learn up to Regeneration in the healing Tree. Your PC Mage should atleast have heal. Have Wynne as your primary healer, and Morrigan as a secondary healer. Have Morrigan take Spirit healer as her secondary Specialization. If you take Spirit Healer/Blood Mage as your PC's Specializations, you can basically do a no pause playthrough on Nightmare.

If we cant kill it, well out heal it lol
FYi Song of valour and telekinetic weapons are not that useful, you need a Cunning of at least 60 to make song of valor regen +1 Mana/Stamina.
This party would work best if you made a Reaver tank outta Alistair/Sten/Ohgren.
Also consider making the PC Mage a Arcane Warrior/Spirit healer or Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage.
You could even go more unique and go Shapeshifters with a ranger with bear/spider or Shale (Shale can seriusly boost the partys Health/mana and stam regen in Stone Aura). Three Swarms is pretty nasty too.

1) Set up your tactics. The defaults suck. I recomend the following set up, in this order.
(a) Self: Any: Buffs
(
© Ally: Low on Health: Heal, etc.
(d) Self: Surrounded by at least 3 enemies: Panic Button Type AOE Talents/Spells centered on self, example, Mind Blast, Two-Handed Sweep, Massacre, War Cry, Whirlwind, etc.
(e) Enemy: Uses Spells: Mana Clash, Pommel Strike, Shield Bash, etc.
(f) Enemy: Rank: Elite or Higher: Any and all useful single target activated talents: Winter's Grasp/Petrification(followed by Stonefist), Paralyze, Hexes, Curses, Scatter Shot, Pinning Shot, anything that causes a crit, etc. Don't let the good stuff go to waste.
Talents/Spells that constantly drain Stamina/Mana may require that you turn off tactic type (f) if your Stamina/Mana pool is small, for example, Spirit Warrior. Once Spirit Warrior drains your Stamina, then Indomitable comes down, then your Two-Handed Warrior gets stomped. So, you don't want him draining his Stamina by spamming Talents. If you have Second Wind or Stamina/Mana potion use in your tactics set up right, then this might not be a problem.
You're not going to have enough tactics for everything. So, make the choices you prefer. But, don't use the defaults. They are horrible.
2) Make sure your buffs are on BEFORE you get into combat. You don't want to waste time in combat with buffs. Let the enemy do that.
3) Pause Button is your friend. You can set auto pause at combat start in options. Don't let the enemy run around doing its thing while you fumble.
4) CTRL-A all the way all the time. Keep your whole party on the same target and things will go well 99% of the time. This will keep them from excercising a mind of their own and put them to work doing something useful.
5) Aim for the boss. Always start the battle by aiming the entire party on the boss. He's usually in the back. This is one reason to always start combat with pause, so you can find and target the bosses. When your frontline rushes past his minions, the minions will follow your frontline, especially the one in the steel suit, keeping your squishies safe. Mages = #1 Bosses, target the Mages first or they will mess up whatever you are doing.
6) It's very useful to start the fight leading with your mage, targeting the whole party on the boss, and opening with Paralyze/Winter's Grasp, then hitting the boss with a crit to shatter him, if possible. If he doesn't shatter, you can just go on to curse/hex/debuff him while he is disabled. Then switch to your Warden, and CTRL-A(always), if your Warden is not the mage.
7) Many times, you don't have to bring a party with you. But, if you do, CTRL-A PWNZ the World, and Pause too, etc..
