Up till now I've just been selling anything that isn't as good as what my main party members have (Morrigan, Alistair, Shale) and just throwing on whatever junk I have stored up at Soldier's Peak onto the other companions when I do their companion quests.
Is this a mistake? Are ALL party members going to participate in the final battle? (and do I need to be saving up good armor+equipment for all of them, and not just the 3 plus me?)
Do I need to be saving equipment for ALL party members?

Four of your remaining companions will participate in defending the denerim gates from the darkspawn, in a side battle, while your main party marches on to fight the archdemon.
It's not essential that they have the best gear possible, as you'll pick some stuff up in between when you first enter denerim, and when this battle starts (you'll be given a chance to equip them and adjust tactics), though it couldn't hurt to have good equipment on hand.. If you want to dump out your warden chest at Soldier's Keep, you'll have a chance to do that after defeating the archdemon, if you're considering importing to Awakening and beyond.

Hmm... does it actually MATTER what the characters in the side battle have on/who they are though? (as it did in Mass Effect 2... though there it was only a question of who was where, the guns and stuff they had did not matter if they were not with you as far as I could tell) Does it affect the course of the battle at all?
And ya I have the ultimate version of whatever it's called that has ALL the DLC so I'll definitely be importing..
I've heard though that DLC gear cannot be used in the DLC that's separate from Origins (i.e. not the Shale DLC, but Awakening, or Witch Hunt).
BTW does it matter that I'm apparently doing this out of order, since Leliana's song I've heard is first?

I do suggest updating your companions' gear as much as possible. I remember a certain ambush you might not have encountered yet that almost wiped my party out, because I hadn't even bothered to arm Sten since recruiting him and Zevran was still on his starting gear. I hadn't set anyone up with tactics either. *cringe*
If your problem is going up to Soldier's Peak all the time, which I imagine is tedious. there is a Storage Chest mod out there that will put a chest in camp, which is much more convenient.
Soldier's Peak items don't import to Awakening, as my poor weaponless Cousland discovered. Don't know about the other DLCs.

Return to Ostagar items are the only ones that import to Awakening, Golems of Amgarrak and Witch Hunt.
You get an option to pick who leads the secondary group, though the other 3 members are random. The game usually does a good job of giving you a balanced party. Usually I pick the person that I want to tank for the group, or a mage, so I know that a healer is on hand.

To answer this question another way: it's not like ME2. Your people can still be wearing regular chainmail and still live if you play their spells/abilities right. There is no predetermined equipment check or anything that will insta-death party members.
