how do i play shep with first person view? have done so before but now cannot! pressed every button, read all the rules--- no mention of camera view through character!

You can't play in first person, unless there's some console command for it I'm not aware of. The only times you'll get a first person view is if you use the zoom while in the mako or aim with a sniper rifle.

Mass Effect inherits some Unreal console commands, so if you're playing on the PC, you may have used the console to modify the camera position. Off hand, I don't know the Unreal console commands for the camera controls, but you should be able to set it's relative position to just in front of Shep's face (Player class?). That said, I don't think this is a good idea since the 3rd person camera was partially chosen to make the take cover game mechanic actually usable. Maybe I'm wrong there, but that's just something to consider before hunting down what the console command is.
Based on other games, I'd guess it's "SetCamera {x degree, y degree, zoom}", or SetCameraPos {x degree, y degree) plus SetCameraDist (distance from pivot point), but I'm not quite familiar with Unreal legacy commands verses console commands that just happen to be common.
