I am amazed at how highly BioWare revere themselves. The indignant defending of DA2. And now reading this http://pc.ign.com/ar.../1165904p1.html.

Some very talented officers from different companies saluting and recognizing the work of other companies in story telling but the BioWare contributor only wants to praise their own efforts. Get over yourself already. There are some rising stars in this industry, you ain't that great.

it's ironic that Treyarch slobbered on Heavy Rain and Bioware slobbered on themselves

even Quantic Dream talked abouto ICO, and David Cage has the biggest ego in game design

15 minutes of fame syndrome

What surprised me is how few of those game designers seemed to understand the difference between story and storytelling.

Oh cmon. It was a game interview of a game developer. Did you expect anything else other than self-masturbatory nonsense?

Wait, are you referring to every game developer in the interview or just BioWare?

Prettty much all of them, to a lesser or greater extent. Though Bioware certainly does stand out, the ego is present in all of them.

Haha. Yeah. I'm still bending over in front of the magnificent storytelling of ME2.

I was one of the chosen ones to whom Bioware was kind and generous  enough to sell their game.  Thusly, I had the unspeakable HONOR of enjoying the ecstatic climax of flawless storytelling that is ME2. It is AMAZING how gracefully and boldly they tell the story from initial " Reapers are coming pretty soon" -  setting it opens with all the way to "Reapers are coming VERY soon!"

All said and done, I love ME2 in conditional fashion. Excellent world, atmosphere and very, very well written characters. But let us  face it friends and neighbors, the game barely has a main storyline to speak of.  Beef portion of ME2 consists of some twenty variations of "Yeah Shepard, sure is bad those  Reapers are coming or whatever. Anyway, I have this estranged twin sister/father/mother/mistress/pet iguana that we really need to save. I just mark loc in your map k?" Most of it is very well written but it hardly counts for some sort of a shining beacon of super awesome  storytelling.

That last part was a complete circle jerk. Bioware and CDPR probably being the worst offenders, though I'd rate Bioware "worst" as Tomasz Gop at least had the decency to praise Deus Ex in one of the questions instead of his own team.

On the other hand, Ken Levine and the guys at 2K get brownie points for mentioning Beyond Good & Evil as well as Planescape: Torment.

:P

*adds 1 point to the Bioshock: Infinity anticipation meter*

In fairness Casey Hudson also mentioned Portal and admitted he was probably being biased.

Yeah, but those types of questions are begging to be elaborated on in depth. I felt like none of the interviewees really did that. Most of it was just circle jerking. "I love Mass Effect/RDR/Bioshock/Ico/SoTC/Half Life" and so forth. Casey Hudson was literally "I may be biased, but Mass Effect is So0o0o0o zomg! AWESOME!!... and Portal was cool too. GET MASS EFFECT 3" *

Compare that interview to this interview on Gamespot 5-6 years ago, and you'll see how much better the responses are.

* I am exaggerating, of course.

To be fair quite a few of them mentioned their own talent in that last part.

..but yeah, I definitely agree that Bioware is full of themselves sometimes.

I'd just argue that in terms of the Mass Effect series, it is well deserved.... not so much on any of their other recent projects though.

Lots of self-congratulatory stroking in the article, but the industry still has a ways to go when it comes to storytelling. Most writing in games is secondhand fair that's usually done better in books and movies.

I know many here will disagree, but I feel The Witcher series represents the best writing I've seen in games thus far, mainly because CDPR truly aims for an adult audience and manages to avoid the usual fantasy tropes.

We get it, Tomasz, you're really proud of your team. -1 for earnestness. :D
I thought it was nice of him to mention all of his writers, but yeah ... this "We're a small company and we're so proud of everything we've accomplished" is getting old. You're almost a big boy, now, and you know it!

If you really want to be annoyed, look at the "documentary". It's 100% gushing and not a lick about actually making the game.

A real article on storytelling with good answers.

http://au.gamespot.c...r-storytellers/

Unfortunately, it's pretty old... but the answers, they are pretty gold.

/badrhyme

Why do you think stories are important in gaming? You've probably played plenty of great games that had little or no story to them.

Chris Avellone wrote...

I think stories are secondary to making the gameplay fun, but a good story is like icing--it just enhances the experience (Half-Life, as an obvious example, and just about any RPG you ever want to play). It provides context for the fun, gives you a reason to keep going, can ****** you off and inspire you at the right points, and it can hit all the emotional points that adrenaline-stress-based gameplay elements can't.

....

When you encounter deep characters, interesting plot elements (and twists), and NPCs in the game-world that seem to have agendas of their own, I think it just challenges the player to think at a higher level when playing the game--suddenly an NPC you meet isn't just someone who gives you a quest; you have to figure out how and why he wants you to do it and what the consequences might be, especially morally, reputation-wise, and financially, for your character.

Hideo Kojima wrote...

When trying to assume the role of a character, you need a setting. It does not necessarily have to be a storyline. You need a minimum setting to become that character.

...

A game will be monotone if the player is simply required to accomplish the assigned goal.

By adding the element of "infiltrate enemy territory without being discovered and save the world" to the simple rules of "hide and seek" (i.e. "do not get found"), you get to experience much more thrill.

Unlike film and novels in which you experience the story, in games I simply add the "story element" so that the player can enjoy the virtual experience.

Ken Levine wrote...

The story should serve to unify the game experience and the narrative, not to exist on a separate track.

And so on.

Much better than the circle jerk article imo.

TW2 prolly wasn't released when they did the interview. I'm still betting it's going to be a milestone in the gaming industry. Of course, having an established book series to base the game helped too.

The problem with Casey's statement is that ME2 is far from Bioware's best. I feel both DA:O and ME1 had more sophisticated stories.

Seriously?

In an interview about STORYTELLING in games, you think the guy from the team that cranks out COD sequels should toot his own horn more than Casey Hudson?

He's completely correct to mention the Mass Effect series. It's acknowledged by many critics and fans as one of the best examples of storytelling in modern games.

He's also under a lot of pressure to get his talking points about Mass Effect 3 across in any press interview, even if it is a short one.

and @ OP - Whatever problems DA2 has, you must admit the dev team made some bold story choices; personally I liked some of those choices, and lots of other people did as well.

They did, it just wasn't as focused as Casey Hudson's Mass Effect praise.

All I saw was CDPR praise Deus Ex, and their own writers for writing TV shows and movies for years hehe

And then see Casey ****** the ME penis..
