Yeah that doesnt work for me... even though ive added the dragon age folder to the exclusion list in Avast (in 3 different places), it still comes up and kills it as soon as I try to start DAO.

I have the same problem just now, the only difference is i'm playing the game for hours and shut the pc down to eat, and when I open it up and open the dao, it won't open cause of missing nxcharacter.dll, and avast haven't informed that it was a virus and haven't seen avast informing me of any virus warnings, I have read topics that avast recognized it as a virus so I went to check the virus chest, lo and behold no nxcharacter.dll there,., T_T

Turned Avast off for ten minutes after restoring the file, the game ran fine. Just played an hour or two with no problems - didn't have one when avast turned back on again.

Tried it and it worked perfectly. Thanks!

I have DAO through Steam and I noticed when I launched Steam it notified me that new DLC just finished downloading for DAO almost instantly (indicating a small file maybe?). But I already had all of my DLC and none should have been downloading. I then started getting the Avast error as well. So maybe the file is compromised somehow? I know we are probably not all on Steam for this game, but something just seems fishy. As with most posters, my gut tells me 99.9% that it is Avast since that seems to be the thing most in common to all of us, but why would Steam have downloaded anything for this game with all files being installed already?

Ok, I was finally able to run the game after I read Empherion´s advice (thanks :)) and played around little. Here´s what I did in Avast:

Settings - Exclusions - I added C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\* to the list

File System Shield - Expert settings - Exclusions - I added C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\* to the list.

Behavior Shield - Expert settings - Trusted processes - I added C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\DAOriginsLauncher.exe to the list.

Then I restored nxcharacter.dll from virus chest.
As you can see I am no expert, so I basically put Dragon age to any exclusion list I could find :innocent:

Hope this can help others too.

I've download nxcharacter.dll from the net and put it in the bin_ship, I started DAO, it works fine until the main menu but when I load a save file, it crashes, I have no choice but to download nxcharacter.dll in the net coz it was nowhere to be found in my computer and in the virus chest.

Same issue here. I tried excluding my Dragon Age Origins folder and then restoring the dll, but then I get an error "Application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000906)." Then I check the virus chest and the dll is back in there again...I've already reinstalled twice, and lost my screenshot collection in the process.

Aetika, just tried your method and everything works now. Thanks for posting your solution =D I also sent avast the file information so they can hopefully get it corrected.

So close to completing the game then this happens! I have re-loaded the game, attempted to restore the file but to no avail. I feel like storming the gates of Avast with fire balls and hexes. Will Avast sort this mess out or what???

Just to be safe, folks might want to make a backup of their My Documents > Bioware > Dragon Age > Characters folder to be safe, especially before attempting to uninstall and reinstall.

Adding... it appears this is indeed being discussed on the Avast forums.  See:  http://forum.avast.c...p?topic=79380.0

I also got the same problem. The game ran a few weeks ago when I tested it on my new computer. I re-installed it without success. I doubt that it is the game as I have stacked over 300 hours of game play on my old pc (Vista, I have Windows 64-bit Ultimate now). I am in the process of downloading AVG now.

I have run a scan of the dragon age folder once I restored the file with AVG (free trial). It found no threats and Dragon Age seems to work fine.

At this point, I think temporarily replacing Avast might be in order.  Remember to reboot after each uninstall.  You may have to uninstall Avast, reboot, install a replacement (like MSE or AVG), reboot, then uninstall the game (yes, and reboot) and then reinstall the game.

Interesting.

My solution was to reinstall the whole thing and kick Avast to oblivion for being a retarded antivirus.

...

I'm ultra pissed. I hate wasting my time.

@RaenImrahl: as an aside, I've gotta say, I love the avatar. IMO, the best portrayal of Merlin in film history =D

And from the uproar this seems to be causing, my guess is that Avast! is going to be receiving hundreds of FP messages, so it'll probably be fixed fairly soon. In my experience, they're a pretty good anti-virus company, so I doubt they'll pull a bioware and let a bug sit around for years without fixing it.

According to a moderator on this forum:

... Avast will sent out the fix in a few hours. Huzzah.

Irony alert:  I happen to have a beta of patch 1.05 installed as we speak.  :innocent:

Edit:  But that's for another thread.

I need to restore from the net as some have mentioned. My @)#$(*#@ Roommate Admin passworded everything and I can't get the file out of the virus chest. Can someone please tell me where to find this file?

Didn't find the file in the Avast Virus Chest so I couldn't restore from there. Added the Dragon Age folders to the exclusion lists in Avast so it wouldn't delete the file again once I found it.

Copied the NxCharacter.dll file from my Eve Online install and DA:O launches again.
