I've been up Sundermount on both pof the paths that go up, and I\\ve been in all the caves. The cave that has in the past gone right through the mountain from the top is blocked with one of those doorways, so I can't seem to proceed to the next area. Am I missing something?
Just to recap. I''ve gone up Sundermount, fought a number of Undead, and gone into the cave at the top, After a couple of rooms in the cave, there is nowhere else to go - -just one of those doors that is blocked with stone (and no, I can't open the door; I've tried numerous times). Is there another way?
Merril's quest Act 3 - how to get to location?

Did you go through the graveyard by chance? The cave for this quest is through the Sundermount passage. So from Master Ilen's shop, where you have the split paths, its the one to the right. Go up the path, through the cave, and you should come out at the graveyard. Walling toward the altar, you'll want to take the path that is to your left. This goes further up Sundermount, winding around until you come to the summit. You'll fight an Elven Assassin (I think) here and should be able to access the cave for the quest.
I hope this helps.

It seems you're in the wrong cave. The way I remember it (and it has been a few months since my last DA2 playthrough) there's only 1 pretty decent sized room in the cave Merrill wants you to go to. It's the cave all the way on the top, through the sundermount passage, through the graveyard, then up the slope once more and then you'll come to it, there's a patch of open ground in front of it and possibly (most likely) a battle.
Also, you should see a strange statue in the middle of a room, you should interact with it (I think) for the quest to proceed.

Yes, I am going through the cave at the top, off the path to the right. I have been through this cave before and I know it is the one that leads to the garveyard because I have been there before.
The trouble is that the way through the cave seems to be blocked. I go in, find some crafting stuff, and come to a place where there is a staircase up that leads to a dead end, and a doorway that is blocked with stone.. It's one of those doorways that you can sometimes open, depending on the quest. But in this case, it is just blocked, so I can;t go all the way through the mountain to get to the graveyard. So I was wondering if there is another way through the cave that I have missed somehow (other than the blocked doorway, I mean).

Ah...ok. If you are facing the staircase, you need to go to the right, not toward the blocked doorway. There isn't a readily visible exit from the cave, but if you move to the right of the stairs, you'll see some stalagmites and a patch of open sky. Walk there and you should get the exit arrow. That should get you to the graveyard area, if memory serves.
