I've scrapped my Blade after dying a few times and am planning to take a Fighter/Cleric through the trilogy. I want to do the Shar-Teel romance from the NPC  Project mod, so she's definitely in. Beyond that, I know that Edwin and Viconia are best at their respective jobs, and my fighter won't  be a Cleric until BG2, so I probably need Vicky. This leaves me with two slots. I could do Eldoth and Skie, though I fear that Shar Teel will end up killing Eldoth at some point, so that's probably a bad idea. I definitely need a thief. The way I see it, I can do Xzar and Montaron, which will net me my thief and another mage, or I can go with one mage, Edwin, keep Imoen, and bring along Kagain. Thoughts?

By BG2 Edwin has the most potential of any pure mage in the saga, as does Vicky as a pure Cleric, so your choices are fine. Besides her loyalty, there are storyline reasons for having Immy around and it has been argued that Kagain in BG1 is as good an evil choice as Korgan in BG2, so you are all set for NPCs. Have you considered being a berserking Ranger in BG1? The poorer armor makes it more of a challenge, but as an R/C (even a "fallen" anti-Ranger) you'll be very powerful in BG2 and ToB. Of course you'll have to pretend to be Good, but as a truly depraved person your lying about your "world view" fits right in and the truth will emerge at the end of SoA.

I wish there was a way to take Monty without Xzar. Xzar just seems terrible to me, but Monty is quite useful.

If you want to minimise reloads then go for Kagain - he's easily the best tank in BG1 if you give him the bracers of dexterity.  Separating Xzar from Montaron is no problem.  Some mods will allow this for you anyway, but the old-fashioned way is just to send Xzar into battle on his own.  Once he's dead he can be replaced by another NPC without any effect on Montaron - as you're evil this tactic should actually amuse youImage IPB.
