I dont really know why this is happening on my 360 copy of the game, but I was wrapping up any quests that I had intrerest and access to and when I went to complete Change in Leadership by entering the Denerim Markey Square, Raelnor, the NPC I am supposed to be looking for, doesnt appear anywhere in the area and will not appear if I leave to go to any other area in Denerim or the world map.

The only thing asscioated with this quest that has occured was the Random Encounter and the only thing I was able to do that was attempt to start a conversation with just the option to leave.

Is this a bugged quest because I have seen problems with this on other forums where it works for some people and not for others.

Bump to get this up where someone might give a good damn about a serious problem with the game.

Decided to try making progress with the story and it seems that the quest still refuses to move on like it should.

Last time I am going to post until someone gives a damn about a brokenly impossible to complete quest.

Played through the Landsmeet and pursued other side quests outside of Denerim and still nothing. I am beginning to think that it was broken by the premature appearance of Taoren's Random Encounter.

Reload a save game from before you accepted the quest and try getting it again, that's all I can suggest - either that, or ignore it and try it again next playthrough.

I can send you a PM telling you where to go next if you'd like, if you have no map marker again.

I had the same problem there was no marker anywhere on the map, but I did eventually find him just by walking around the are. It took me like 10 minutes though because I kept missing a particular spot.

Trick. I knew right where to find him and by time I realized that it wasnt working, I had already been through the random encounter and didnt even have an auto-save from that far back.

Jem. I kept looking over a series of hours and continuing the game up to a point of no return and he didnt show up.

Quest is bugged either way if it doesnt work all the time to begin with.

Yeah.. so I just got this quest also.. (luckily I had a saved right before it.) You leave the tavern into the market place.. there was no marker so I figured I needed to leave and come back.. It specifically states that the guy will be in the market. So I ran to Redcliffe to complete the mages collective quest and on the way back I got the random encounter. Which seems isn't supposed to occur unless you first talk to the the guy in the market place and agree to kill his son instead of him. All I got was a weird dialogue where the guy says.. "Ah my friend .. it's good to see you again." "Do we have any business".. and your response gets to be.."none at the moment" Definitely a big glitch since the encounter is random. I just reloaded so I'll run around the market and try to find this guy. If I can't find him.. I'll see if it has anything to do with finishing up the landsmeet first. (I haven't completed that yet.)

You just repeated my experience almost word for word. I think if you get the Random Encounter before getting to Denerim, the quest bugs out and screws you over in a bad way.

Ok.. so here's what I discovered after reloading.

1. The father is standing in the back alley directly in front of the entrance to Denerim. You kind of have to run down the alley a bit to see him. If you leave Denerim with or without talking to the father you'll meet the son on the road to Redcliffe. (each time I tested I ran to Redcliffe and ran back to Denerim, the son would always show up on the way back to Denerim from Redcliffe in the dip right under the skull&crossbones of sacked Lothering.)

2. Meeting the son first..(the bug.)

You get back to Denerim and the father is still there..(at least he was for my testing.) You can then talk to the father and choose to kill the son. But you've already had the random encounter.. I went back and forth from Redcliffe to Denerim 10 times.. nothing.. the son never showed up...

Random stuffs.

If you choose to kill the father you get xp, loot, and 4 gold for completing the quest.

If you choose to kill the son you get the same..

You can choose to walk away from it and the father will go off to kill the son..the quest log updates to complete but you get nothing from the guild.. maybe xp but it doesn't show that and I can't tell if my bar raised or not.

If you talk to the father before you leave and then talk to the son you can..

choose not to kill him.. the son then goes of to kill the father.. you get nothing,, maybe xp and quest log updates to complete..

You can intimidate the son .. he'll give you 3 gold .. and then go away to kill his father... the quest log updates as complete but you get no reward from the guild.

The son seemed the hardest fight of the two.

so the bug lies within the realm of leaving Denerim without talking to the father.. hitting the random encounter which shouldn't show up and then not being able to get back to the random encounter if you so choose to kill the son after talking to the father.

More like it rests in the random encounter itself. I picked up the quest in Redcliffe as I was going there due to the complete ease of access to the MC and the BI reps and I had the encounter on the way to Denerim

Ah.. that's even more evil because you wouldn't even get to get to Denerim before getting the random encounter.

It is kind of weird that I hadn't seen this bug listed before but maybe because of the lateness of the quest not a lot of folks have done it... Right when I hit the random encounter I remembered your post and thought.. oh crap...the bug.

This is what I am thinking now considering I took the quest in pre-landsmeet Redcliffe. You take it up after completing the last of the quests you pick up in the game, the moment you attempt to travel anywhere, the random encounter triggers and makes the quest impossible to finish regardless of if you are trying to go to Denerim or Soldiers Peak.

Regardless, the quest looks to only be possible if you take up the mission in Denerim considering that if you attempt to travel anywhere outside of the city, and you are boned beyond belief.

The complete lack of care from the Bioware staff really disturbs me.

I know right?.. In most posts all it would take is for a forum mod to come in and say.."everythings going to be alright we know blah, blah, blah,"  or "we don't know blah, blah, blah,..."..  but even though it lists like 50 forum mods.. there's hardly any response from any on lots of posts.  There's also multiple posts of the same type problems floating around everywhere. .. isn't it the mods job to lock threads and direct people to the correct thread so that people can see that the problem is or has being/been discussed?  Heck there's two threads about the downloadable dagger right here on the front page of the xbox forums.
This site was really, really good the month before the game came out.  Maybe everyone got sleepy and fell off their chairs and bumped their heads and now they can't get up.

More like they want to hear more ****ing over the fact that they forced an incomplete game out the door before they feel like they have to do something to keep their jobs. I feel cheated enough because I had to pay 15 bucks for DLC that only lasted 15 minutes, and now I have to deal with all of the crap they are more or less refusing to fix.

Bring this back up again as the Change in Leadership quest being bugged is a major problem that cant be ignored without all credibility being lost.

SINCE BIOWARE REFUSES TO AKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE ARE MAJOR BUGS AND GLITCHES IN THE GAME THAT ARE POTIENTIALLY GAMEBREAKING, THIS WILL STAY UP ON THE FRONT PAGE UNTIL THEY ADMIT TO THE MULTIPLE PROBLEMS THAT ARE BEING BROUGHT UP WHILE THEY FORCE OUT DLC.

I have just about lost faith in Bioware for ignoring this problem for 4 days now.

Now I am insulted how someone from Bioware came by, and refused to even look in this direction.

You know you could read the sticky post at the top of the forum. For game support you have to go to EA. This forum is just for players to help each other out. To report a bug or glitch you have to fill out a ticket with EA. Go to the sticky post for the link.

Had to wait hours for the site to work. Bioware should just go ahead and fess up all the same.
