When creating your ME2 do you design the armour to maximise bonuses or design them to look good & look different to your other characters.

I'm the same as you. I never wear the Kestrel helmet, for instance. It has great stats but it's so ugly. The same goes for a lot of the N7 armor pieces. I'm more concerned with the colour of my armor than how effective it is. Which is probably why I suck at RPGs.

Yeah, I'm always getting grief off mates, cos they think I handicap myself, whereas I'd rather play a character that I'm "into" rather than one that's as hard as, but looks like he was thrown together

Ehh the stats for each armor piece don't make much of a difference to me, even on insanity, so I go for looks

Armor is completely redundant in ME2; I would have my FemShep fight butt-naked if I could

A little of both. I go for form over function, but I wont use something that just looked freaggin awful. Like the Kestrel Helmet.

Considering that the bonuses don't do very much other than satisfy min-maxing urges, I design them to look good in cutscenes and without a helmet whenever possible. I also go to pains to not wear anything similar to a what a squaddie or NPC wears.
Much as I love Garrus, I resent him for making my two favorite colors off limits.

Seriously, anyone goes for the stats? They are so minor and affect the game mechanics in such a small maner that I never would expect anyone does.

Bonuses? What bonus? You mean those unnoticable differences that amount to 3% to this and 5% to that in a cover based game in which your screwed if you're not in cover no matter what. I just figured those were meaningless captions. Some kind of easter egg gone terribly wrong.
To answer your question:
Looks.

Personally, I think Kestrel is the best looking armor, so I don't really have to choose. I never wear helmets though.

I go for stats mostly, but not completely or I would just put full kestral on almost every character. I usually have the ordnance pack for 2 cain shots. I only use recon hood on an infiltrator, the visor on a soldier or vanguard.

I like the Kestrel shoulder pads and don't mind the leg armor. The Capacitor chest plate (shield regen is actually really useful in ME2) looks good on femshep, and then either no helmet or a visor, depending on the character.

You know, ME2 might be the only game where I don't try to look awesome first and practial second. I'm not really sure why that is but I am guilty of putting my squad-mates in somewhat-good looking armour in ME1 (not a big fan of Colossus on any characters except Shepard).
I don't own any of the DLC armours for ME2 (except the icky Cerberus one) so my selection for Shepard isn't all that diverse, I usually get out of the N7 as soon as I can and try to wear pieces that fit with my class-type, even if they don't necessarily "match" visually. My vanity kicks in with the helmets/visor though.. I never wear one.
Anyway, I think the OP raises an interesting question. We like to look good in our imaginary settings and I think the devs recognise that, especially since they have said that mods to weapons in ME3 will have a visible effect. We like to see the impact and decisions we make in the world and kicking ass without style just isn't worth our time.
In most other games I will always choose the more aesthetically-pleasing piece of gear over the more useful gear every time.

i have no idea what any armor peices bonuses are. after the first time i scrolled through and saw pointless numbers like +5% i stopped looking at that section of the screen.
i purely base it off looks.

I generally wear the Visor, N7 Chestplate, Kestrel Shoulder Pads, and Kestrel Armor for the arms and legs. If I'm playing MaleShep I generally wear the Death Mask.
Most stats are unnoticeable. I mean, +10% storm speed? Really?

I'm pretty much just picking parts for style. 5% more weapon damage or headshot damage? That's barely noticeable. It's like one bullet less if you're using SMGs.
Make it 10% and higher with some unique bonuses in ME3, and I might think about picking pieces because of their abilities instead of looks.

Hmm, I seem to have aesthetic feelings based upon functionality: whatever works best is beautiful. However, my armor is not completely uniform in color and as a glass-wearing person, I might use goggly headwear where appropriate.

Bit of both... but tbh, the part of 'cosmics' I am playing around most are the colours. Sure there are a few pieces of armor I've tried and which were totally distasteful in the end (Blood Dragon Armor and Collector Armor, I am looking at you two), but when combining single pieces you normally can have a neat combination as long as you pick some nice colors and patterns.

I would rather my armor have the looks and the protection but that's a hard set of armor to find at points but in the end I'll pick style over function cuz I don't want shep to look horrible sense I have to be with them the whole game.

I think I used the biggest possible armour and the sniper optic. Would have gone for the speech boost one, but god, it's hideous! Like a pig's skull.

In ME2, I go for looks over stats for the variosu N7 armor pieces. In my last ME1 play-through, I finished the game in Onyx X. What can I say, I'm a sucker for that N7 insignia.

The stats have very little impact on gameplay, so they're not really worth being ugly for.
