 I just have a hard time trying to make her the amazing blood mage I hear she is. Can someone link or tell me how to build a stable blood-magic using Merrill? XD

if you have patch 1.03 this will be quite difficult.

There is a very decent Merrill build. But it is Patch 1.01/1.02.

Yeah patch 1.03 merrill isn't manditory blood mage. Before she was godlike useful.

I played with her mastering her special tree (I did this with all the NPCs, I don't think I will again), and was underwhelmed, mostly because I wasn't impressed with Wrath of the Elvhen.

Aside from that I had her master the Primal tree, simply because it is so diverse and let me put all of her CCCs on tactics. Petrify to apply Brittle, Chain Lightning to nuke Staggered and Stonefist to pound Disoriented. Tempest came in really handy as an AOE.

For tactics I had her Petrify anything attacking her, which helped her defensively. After that, I had her Stone's Throw to Aveline if she were being attacked in melee.

By the time you master two trees though, you aren't going to be able to invest into much else before the game ends. I think she picked up some Arcane (for Arcane Shield with the party) and Spirit.

Wrath of the Elvhen is nice for the health regen, and nature damage is good against spirits. Its not like she has many choices as arcane shield doesn't stack with heroic aura (which anders runs for me).

Also Ensnare is a nice skill, and Stones Throw is useful for jumping her out of trouble. Never use to have her jump to Ally: Highest Heath or just to anders though.

However yes, in the grand scheme of things the priority was to get Primal tree, then her personal, then spend anything left on bits and bobs (sometimes elemental, sometimes spirit, sometimes arcane).

Merrill also has access to the Entropy tree. If I"m running with a rogue or warrior Hawke I usually keep both Anders and Merrill in party so you've got buffs and hexes.

Yeah, I was thinking of making her Entropy next time around. That's something else I think I'd like to delegate to tactics -- hexing the enemy with the highest health.

I use Merrill like I use Morrigan in DA:O. Disabler/Controller to let the rest of the party scythe through the rest.

1.03 definitely and excessively nerfed blood magic. From 1:1 to .25 to 1 on the items? Really? *facepalm* But still, her personal tree is actually pretty nice. Upgraded Wrath is a great way to deal with shades/undead and spirits, and also provides her with healing. Stone's Throw is nice for warping out of trouble when she gets isolated or mobbed.

I'll use primal for her attack spells and then load up on hex, horror, and sleep. Use her to lock down a section of the field and then pound through the rest.

Her friendship buff still shows as 1:1 but I have no way of telling if thats true. In the middle of an Act 2 game she seems to be holding up well as a blood mage. I like to have her use stones throw to be near Hawke, and ensnare to pull enemies in for his 2H weapon. Helps especially after you've used something like Whirlwind and knocked everyone back to have them drawn in. It heals Merrill and helps Hawke keep aggro off of her since she's closer.
Otherwise the investments are:
Primal tree (not all of it, I kill stuff too fast for stuff like tempest to matter)
Entropy - This tree is priceless against bosses and elites
Dalish Pariah - Bloodmagic is still good to use for her, just takes a little more micro managing.
Extra points to pick up Winter's Grasp and Cone of Cold if possible.

Patch 1.03 just made some companions more... fiddly. I have to change tactics around for all my companions (since Stagger barely comes up anymore... *grumble*)

Fixed.

They changed gear stat only, not character conversion rates.

Merrill will still be fine as a Blood mage, and it is easy to get her to a 4:1 conversion ratio. I still think Primal is the most versatile tree and it suits merrill perfect. I like splashing in entropy for The first hex and an upgraded Horror spell. Not so keen on the other Entropy spells. Her personal tree is good, (although not extremely good) and I also will sometimes splash in Spirit depending n group setup.

Even with the slight nerf to Chain Lightning, Primal will still really shine. It has Crowd Control, Party friendly AoE, it can Setup Brittle and Finish Disoriented or Staggered. Rock Armor for extra surviveability. Whas not to love. Its also very easy on Tactics, even sweeter.

Merrill would be totally viable if you put 1 point into her spec tree to get blood magic, and then just maxed Primal and Entropy. CC / Debuff / Dps.

What would you say is the best way to focus her after the patch? Is she still better setup as a bloodmage, because no matter what, setting her to bloodmage mode gets her more kill every time I try on Nightmare mode.
