I loaded ME2 on my desk top - quad core 3.2 ghz phenom cpu, ATI HD5770 video card, 8 gb RAM, windows 7 64 bit.  When i try to play, i get sound and a black screen that immediately minimizes.  When I maximize the window, i still have sound, a black screen, and it immediately minimizes again.  I have updated my video driver, closed all background programs to no avail.  Spent nearly an hour with tech support, and they couldn't help me.  Any ideas?

Not a clue, not without all of the missing information. Refer to Pacifien's guide you've chosen to just ignore so far, pinned on top to help the new arrivals get oriented here.

Quoting my own post from another thread about black screen on start up. This ofcourse only applies if you're using Origin.

It's most likely "Origin -in game" feature causing it to crash on start up. At least when Origin was called "EA download manager", the "in game" function crashed the game so disabling it from Origin's settings should do it.

Mohawk:

I don't understand what you said about Origin -in.  I may be dense, but can you clarify?

Gorath, without sounding snotty back, I ran dxdiag and sent it to EA. They told me that my system exceeds all requirements. I tried everything the EA tech supprt told me and none of them helped. The only thing that i see that may, and i repeat, may be the problem is that my machine runs DirectX11, not 9. If this is the problem, can someone suggest a fix?

When you install ME2 it should offer to install DX9. If you accepted then there shouldn't be an issue, other than that you can always reinstall but the game will always show the highest version, ie in your case DX11.

Tech support is good, but Gorath and Bogs are both really experienced with ME issues and all the information from the sticky post does help. You see it may be a driver issue, or something this board has seen before and can point out that the tech line may have missed.

What kind of Audio card are you running, Realtek has issues with default Win7 drivers.
What driver are you running on your ATI card--the Catalyst number?
May seem silly to you but a bunch of people have been helped by these guys over the last year.

Oh, and the DX report is mostly useless, go look at the sticky and report what it asks not a copy and paste of the DX file.

Are you running ME2 in XP compatibility mode, and under administrator?? Have you updated your game?

Actually, i get sound, just a black screen. I am not running realtek. Just upgraded to the lateset ATI Catalyst last night. The game never asked to install DX9 when i installed it. I'll go through the sticky post again.

Steam, EADM, or disk version?
If not the Steam version, have you run the 1.02 patch? if not, please do so.
If it is the Steam version, I suggest downloading and installing DX9.0c from Microsofts website, as ME2 specifically requires that version, and DX10 is not backwards compatible enough for ME2's requirements.
Are you running in XP compatibility mode?
Have you disabled UAC, and/or, runnning the game as admin?

Install DX9.0c from the link I provided, or from the directory on the disk, just in case it didnt install from the disk as part of the install process.
How about my other 2 questions, XP compatability mode, and with admin access?

Edit: AMD CPUs can sometimes have problems with core affinity when it xcomes to this game. Check out an app called MassAffinity

I have only one account on this computer, so i have admin access already. I don't know what to do in terms of XP compatability mode. I tried downloading DX 9 \\\\, but i could not install as i got the message my machine has a newer version installed.

Everyone, thanks for the help. Nothing has worked so far, and i frankly don't want to waste more of my time trying to tweak the system to run the game.

Ha. and there was me thinking his snotty attitude may have been personal - if you are staff Gorath you need to go on a customer services course because your attitude is appauling.  We are not all feckin PC wizards.

Unless there is a Bioware tag under their name, noone on these forums is staff. As per the forum description:

Mass Effect 2 PC Technical Support (Spoilers Warning)
This forum is for fans and owners of Mass Effect 2 on the PC to assist each other with technical questions. Official game support is provided by Electronic Arts, but fans are encouraged to try to assist each other here.

The second post on these forums is the "Read First" thread which outlines how to post an error report. The next one after that is a Tech FAQ, or Frequently Asked Questions. We dnot expect everyone to be PC wizards, but we do expect them to read the posts that are there to help them. Dont read them, then you get pointed in their direction. Depending on how often we have had to point people in their direction on any given day, our attitudes vary.

Of course, given that EA provide official tech support for the game, if you dont like the attitudes you find here, you are more than welcome to go to EA's support site and deal with them.

Bogsnot1 is 100% correct. I got exactly the same problem since EADM became Origin, and going into the Origin settings, In Game tab and unticking [Enable Origin In game] made the game launch perfectly again.
