 Hello people.

My very first thread on this site. :D

I am posting to ask if theres any way to change the appearance of my character after starting a game?

I ask because I made 2 very attractive Elf characters (Mage and City) and as you can see by my avatar also managed an attractive, rugged looking Dwarf (Noble). But my Human (Noble) is absolute pants in game.

He looked fairly fit in the Chargen screen but once in game he looks all pallid and ugly. Eugh.

So I want to change his appearance without having to restart the game.

Need to use the console most likely, but the "runscript chargen" thingey doesnt work. It goes back to the chargen screen as if you are starting again but the character doesnt come up at all, you cant manipulate or do anything really. Its just blank.

Annoying.

So suggestions would be massively welcome.

I would like this simply because you're character looks different than in the character creation screen.  Trying not to get the eyes too bib or too small was a nightmare.

I think perhaps the lighting the Chargen "dungeon" means you dont really get a proper "look" at your character.

Found this, may help:

I am running the mac version, so no toolset so can't test it. Been trying to find a hex editor that will read the .das file properly, but no luck so far.

I think should be at least the option to change hairstyle and hair colour after, in game, like in PSO. Being able to change the face would not make sense though.

I think it was a mistake to make the character creation screen so dark.

There's a way, but you need to edit the morph file using the DAO editor.  There's a step-by-step in the developer wiki.  It's not the "hardest" techy thing to do, but it's also not for a tech novice either.

here's the link to the wiki: social.bioware.com/wiki/datoolset/index.php/Head_morph_tutorial

I had that same thing too, the character making lighting is so bad, that once I was out in the game world you realize what your char really looks like and you want to fix it.

by the way, this is for PC.  if you be on xbox, you be screwed.

This does work for pretty well for PC users. Just be sure to use the PASTE VALUE function in the toolset. I pasted the values directly in the text box for the editor, and the results were really creepy....

I just managed to do this a couple days ago, by sifting through all the related threads.  What I did was replace one character-generated appearance with another.

You need the toolset but I didn't need to edit anything except savefiles with it.  People have figured out how to do more complicated things, but in my case, I just wanted to duplicate the appearance of a character I wanted to start over with.  I also didn't do anything tricky like changing the gender or race.

To do this, you need a save game file for the old character whose appearance you want to change, and another savegame file for the new appearance.  You can roll a new character with the appearance you want, and the game will auto-save it as soon as you finish the first cutscene of the origin story.  Then you can exit the game.

The savegame files should be located in your document folder, in a subdirectory with the name of the character and the name of the save slot.  Locate the old file and the new file; they are called "filename.das"  where "filename" is either the name you gave it, or a default for auto-saves.  I recommend making a copy of both files in the same directory, in case you need to start over.

Open the new save file in the toolset editor, and navigate to:

SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR/SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR_CHAR/SAVEGAME_PLAYER_MORPH

Make sure you go to that exact field; there is a similarly named one that you don't want.  It should say it is a BINARY field under the type.

Right click on that row and choose "Copy".

Now open the old save file in the toolset editor and navigate to the same place.  Right click that row and choose "Paste Value".

Then go to the file menu and click Save.

Now your character in the old file should have the new facial appearance and hair.

(Obviously this was on the PC)

Err, uh, wrong thread. Pretend I never performed this vile act of thread necromancy. Apparently there's no delete option anymore.

I really think the editor is lacking. Most of the time the in-game character bears little resemblance to the editor one. This editor is too limited too as there are not that many choices one can make other than the ones provided. I used some good editors before such as in the Smackdown games and this in not one of them.

Also bumping this thread, for the exact same reasons as ElectricWizard. Belechannas' post made it so easy for me to change the appearance of my character. Thanks a bunch for the easy to follow instructions!

hey, thanks a billion for that! my appearance was starting to ****** me off lol. unfortunately, after creating the new appearance which i'm now happy with and want to keep, i forgot to add a tattoo over his eye which looked cool. is there any way to simply add a tattoo to the face without creating another character?? can i open the head in the toolset or anything? :/ any help would be much appreciated. thanks.

Use this:

www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php

Very easy, no toolset, no manual file replacement of any kind. Just start a new game, create whatever appearance you want, and save that game under a name you will recognize in the Character folder. I use names like "SideburnsDarkStubble", "WhiteHairGreenEyes", etc.

Make sure you know your destination save game: I like to use names like "Mage 121810", where the number means December 18, 2010.

Does the picture also update if you use the mod? I'm not at home, so I can't test it.

I played around with the toolset before and there the picture stayed the same.

Would be stupid if you have a character with green hair and your avatars are white.

Is there a way to view what the current character's settings are in the appearance editor?

I'm pretty happy with my current appearance except for his lip size (makes him look like an idiot). I wish I could tweak just that one variable, but all the guides I've found talk about creating a whole new head and importing it.

I have the same problem as your..... I like the face of my elf, I just want to slightly redo his lips and make his ears pearking more..... I don't want to change his whole face. And not sure if I'll be able to recreate his whole face in a new save.....
