So, I've played a new playthrough with the history of my Warden that hasn't been through the events of Awakening yet. And I come to see that I will not be getting the Finding Nathaniel quest in Act 3, which now bars me from getting Varric's final armor upgrade in act 3. The alternate to the quest is Fools Gold in Act 2, which does no good for getting the armor upgrade as its in the wrong act. Bioware, can you make an alternate place to get Varric's final armor for such a situation? I am rather disappointed that the armor upgrade is tied into a quest that's not a guarantee to get. It seems that my only options are to not get the upgrade, or scrap the playthrough and play Awakening just to get the quest. Did someone not notice that or what???<_<

I was wondering that same thing. I DID get the Finding Nathaniel quest, but missed Varric's armor upgrade. I didn't realize it until later, and by then, I didn't feel like replaying everything I'd spent all evening doing.

Edit: I agree with you on ingredients collecting. Why is it that Isabela's 3rd Act quest is the only place you can get Ambrosia?

AGREED ON BOTH POSTS. The armor upgrades should be random and based on levelling instead of chances of losing them altogether. I was FRIENDS with Isabella, but she still left, didn't return, (maybe because I was playing as a rogue, and that made 3 in the party???) so I couldn't access the Ambrosia.
But these issues weren't severe enough that it killed the game. I will never attempt to get all items but I liked the creation Ambrosia allowed.

My character is also a rogue, but Isabela came back I don't know if it makes a difference that they're in a romance or not; my character and Isabela are.

I think only Hawke-specific items (armor, weapons, runes, etc) should be ones that have limited access, especially if access is limited due to imported DA:O or DA:A saves (or lack thereof). I didn't play with a Martyr backstory, nor did I import a DA1 saved game, so there was no way I was able to get Varric's last armor upgrade. I think that kinda stinks. :(
