If Shepard starts having visions of people telling him that all his struggles are in vain and he can't help anyone, I'm calling indoctrination attempt. Or maybe the kid is a symbol that represents humanity. Or something. Whatever it is, I really liked that moment when Shepard offers his hand and his help is rejected.
The krogan fertile female (princess??) - I liked that, too. She's very suspicious, as well. When she says, "Then I hope you brought an army" - very fishy, because right afterwards, Shepard is attacked by Cerberus...and no one but Cerberus. Did she know in advance that Cerberus would oppose Shepard? Being locked in her cell as she was? Or were her words a threat?
And then she says, "you don't know me," and I'm starting to wonder if she's partially indoctrinated and is trying to warn him, because her words imply that her motivations are unclear. Then, when she says "Wrex can't keep his hands off a fertile female. He'll be here," I'm already suspicious enough of her that I start to wonder if she anticipates the meeting with Wrex because she wants to kill him. Her words certainly hold no affection or hope - only bitterness, contempt, and certainty. She knows Wrex - she has a history. Hardly a "princess" - I'd say she's pretty old.
I liked what's been done to Shepard's face - he no longer looks like a robot, and his face has a tragic feel to it, and his eyes are sad. He's actually pleasant to look at. I really liked that moment when the krogan female speaks of the army, and there's an explosion that gives Shepard a shake. I like how his head tilts because of the impact. The enemy knocks on the door.
I liked how he says, "Mordin!" and he sounds genuinely pleasantly surprised to see him - but of course, Mordin has no time to greet him, and you can just tell that Shepard expected this. Cold reunions are something he's totally used to.
And I liked it when the enemy comes in and Shepard takes cover - his expression is an eye candy. It looks like he's prepared for the worst. Maybe he already knows what's really happening, at this point. He doesn't look surprised. Or maybe I'm imagining things.
And it was a good moment when Atlas appears, and we can see the driver - wearing mask, of course. It just broke my heart, poor Mook looks like he already knows that he's doomed, but he's prepared to face his fate, like a true self-sacrificing hero. Honestly, it's like that pilot already knows that he's only here so that Shepard can take him out and claim the mech. And the pilot looks his death directly in the eye, determined to go through it to the very end. I nearly cried.
I have a strong suspicion that if that moment affected me so much, then I'm going to play through the game constantly sobbing. Fighting the indoctrinated humans every step - it's dark. It's VERY dark. I like to celebrate my victories, and to feel gleeful satisfaction when I bring the enemies down, not - this.
Good shot when Shepard takes cover under Atlas' fire, too. Also, Mordin looks truly concerned during the mission, and I like that moment with his hands on the screen. The cinematics really improved.
Didn't have an issue with the lack of options in dialogue. I liked it, actually. Who selects the neutral option, anyway? I never do. Why pick "investigate" manually - just leave it to Shepard, let him ask everything you need to know automatically, since you're going to pick every investigate option anyway. It makes it less of a chore.
And less options always deepen and improve the story...as long as we are still allowed to make choices that could make a difference in the plot.
Shepard is still allowed to roleplay his reactions. And as long as he's allowed to make major choices that lead to crucially different paths, I don't need to be able to make small choices that lead to the same outcomes. I'm not a big fan of "illusion of choice" policy anyway, I find it neither satisfactory nor interactive.
I liked the omni-blade. Can't begin to tell you how many times, surrounded by husks, I wished I could have a blade in my hand to slice through them. It looks dangerous and satisfactory. And I wish it could be modified so that it injects sedatives. I want to put the humans attacking me into a stasis, and flee before they wake up.
Also, could you please, PLEASE not talk during the demo? Pause it to comment, or comment afterwards, because I want to hear what the characters are saying, and I can't hear them because you're talking! Before Shepard says, "They're indoctrinated," someone else says something, and I can't hear who that is. Is that Liara? Is she speaking of Cerberus? What exactly is she saying - is she surprised? So, she didn't know that they were indoctrinated, but Shepard did? He's better informed than she, then? (hee, Shepard is better informed than the Shadow Broker?) Or perhaps it's merely his guess? Something he prefers to believe in? I can't tell if I can't hear what they're speaking about.
Overall, it had enjoyable moments amidst all the shooting, and some nice cinematics. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the interactive part (by that, I don't mean interacting with Cerberus by shooting at them.)
With that said, if in the following week we don't catch even a glimpse of TIM, and will get no intel whatsoever on Cerberus betrayal, I'll have to disengage. Can't stay emotionally connected to a game for a freaking YEAR without even the slightest ray of hope to set things right. It's too dark and depressing right now to be truly anticipating it.
