Would anyone know the best compression, aspect ratio and all other relevant settings in the following pic, (RAD video Tools)  for *.avi conversion to be used as an in-game cutscene efficiently while maximizing quality? I'm not sure what the original game uses and hope someone might have experience in this.

Also, I understand that DA2 uses audio included with the bik file. Can this be done in DA:O as well? So far I only noticed external sound mixes within the Cutscene editor.

Thanks :)

This is the .bat section we are using for the BG2 movies conversion that has the setting calling the bink.exe by the bat. The movies play fine at these settings in DA

@ECHO ===================================================================
@ECHO Converting avis to bik...
@ECHO ===================================================================

for %%x in ("%addinpath%\\module\\override\\Movies\\*.avi") do "%radpath%\\bink.exe" "%%x" "%addinpath%\\module\\override\\Movies\\%%~nx.bik" /L0 /P64 /A30 /#

What do you mean by the last part? Me no comprende
Are you asking if you can mix in sound to an Avi, bink it and then play that in game or in game via the cutscene editor? I would imagine that anything you add sound wise to the avi would play.

@Cuvieronius Thank you for that! I'm going to try and figure those out . Am I correct in assuming in layman terms :

for avifile name in ("path to avi file") do "path to radtools bink.exe" "new bik filename" "new path of outputfile" with the switches /LO/p64/A30/# ?

Sorry for the batch noobness, but last time I touched DOS or related was ages ago :S

@Beerfish What I noticed in DA:O was that the bink movies were silent when used in the CS editor in Single Player (unless I haven't tested them all) And found that DA2 used a few Bink files with sound mixed already within the bink file.

What I wanted to know was if DA:O could play a bik that included sound as well as sound tracks in the CS editor.

Edit: the batch file seems to be working. I will try then post my results :wizard:

Glad it is working!!! Hehe... one other thing I noticed when creating a bink cutscene is that the timeline length of the cutscene needs to match the length of the bink movie. Too short and the movie cuts off, too long and you get black screen.

Since you will have the cutscene length the same as the bink... I imagine you could play other sounds in the timeline, but havent tried it. The movies we are currently using already have sound.

Let me ask a question... I have made a new bik file by removing 300 frames from the original bik movie, when I try to replace the original with my modified version in the cutscene it doesn't change the lenght of the movie strip, and if I add a new one it stays with 60 frames lenght... how can I change that to fit my new bik movie file?

Thanks a ton for the help Cuvieronius! I still haven't tested the newly converted bik, but once I do I'll post here.

@alschemid I've spoken to someone with a similar problem a while back, but don't recall ever finding out why it does that (found a workaround). I would like to know as well.

Thanks. Another problem that I'm having is the quality of the bik movie in game, it looks great in the bink player, but not in game.

Unfortunately I haven't tested the settings in the game just yet. But it seems that the aspect ratio and overall size (after using the above batch) is much smaller than what the game shows, so I am assuming the stretch might cause the quality compromise. I'll test this and post as soon as I can.

Bumping this thread, in case anyone has any more information to add on how to use a bik in the editor. So far, I find mixed results with the bik bar remaining the same size when inserting a new bik, making it hard to create a "live" scene around it.
