Since one can't just let a topic rest in peace without someone digin it up again, here is an altered OP, edited to better reflect my since then refined thoughts.

What does the Omniblade look like?
A friggin' Lightsaber. Period. That is what it looks like. Or alternatively a hardlight spring-knife that is glowing like a Lightsaber.

What the Omni-Blade is said to be?
A mono-molecular blade quick-manufactured by the omni-tool.

Problems with said explanation?
If it is a physical blade, why is it attached to a holographic User Interface?

Foregone conclusion?
Something is dearly amiss, period.

-----------------------------

What the Omni-blade can be?
A mono-molecular shard quickly manufactured around the omni-tools wrist extension. The wrist extension is outfitted with high-tech shockdispensers normally designed to secure the omni-tools physical componets from damage when in high-profile situations to prevent malfunctions. When the Omniblade is building up around said shock dispenser, the effect extends upon the entirety of the evolving blade, preventing it from shattering as the mono-molecular shard is extremely fragile and prone to shattering upon force impact. This effect also largely prevents the shard from breaking when the user is moving.
Due to the shards mono-molecular architecture, it can slice into almost anything, however that performance is only of limited utility. Due to the instable structural integrity, the shard has to be struck with a precise, linear motion to prevent it from prematurely shattering before inflicting any damage, meaning only experienced operatives that can keep their concentration in potentially fatal CQC situations have the prerequisites to handle this blade to any effect.
Inevitably when put under too much stress, the shard will shatter. Due to the extremely tense material structure, which is needed for the shard to withstand the impact of penetration and not shatter immediately, the shard will abruptly and violently shatter when breaking, ensuring no remnants are left on the users wrists.

What that Omni-blade should look like?
First off, no omni-tool interace lighting up. That is unused energy being wasted when there is no need to use said interface. That amount might very well be neglectable, but any operative worth his/her training would want to conserve as much energy as physically possible to keep reserves he/she can put to use later-on or in unforeseen events, period.
Rather, due to the crystaline stracture such a quick manufactured mono-molecular diamond shard would have, there would be a glittering reflection of light when the shard is being manufactured and finally a merely distortion of light where the shard is located as the light is being bended. Depending on how compact the shard is created, it may very well be non-transparent and be a reflecting grey.

Looks ****. I was also expecting an actual blade and not a cyber-disco shovel thing

I'm okay with it, but an actual blade would have been much more appropriate for the soldier.

People are welcome to voice the opinions, pro or con, about the Omni-blade. HOWEVER, do not insult each other.

Thanks

The movement is certainly greatly improved. But I had imagined a knife/dagger like for example the one from Assassin's Creed, which is functional, practical AND realistic instead of punching people with light. That might at best be confusing to the target why he is using that silly display when he's punching you and you get one or two free hits on the target, but otherwise it is just plain inappropriate.

I think the omni-blade is a lot better than fifteen elbows to the face.

Each class has their own version. Biotics have a biotic blade. I think that one was the soldier version.

Biotic Blade is at least doable if it is a concentrated form of warp (less a blade than a biotic chainsaw, but near enough).
An actual blade would have been better for the soldier. Some good old-style knife twisting.
Maybe a omni-tool punch for the engineer, shocking the armor's components and the enemy within, but please, no nonsensical light-sabers.

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the lore explanation for the omni-blade... that's really all I care about.

Having a real metal knife might be impractical.

What's the big deal?. It's just a melee attack.
